    Scariest Baddies

Now, this is not as easy a question as you might think to answer. If you were a commoner living, for arguments sake in the Empire, which nastiness would you be most concerned by?

Now you have to consider that though things like Greater Daemons, Shaggoths and Emperor Dragons are some of the most brutal and terrifying enemies you could face, having them stroll through your village is unlikely. So, who woukd scare you most? The living dead? Beastmen, or maybe even the pressgangs of Karl Franz's Navy?

That's really subjective dependent upon what terrifies you the most- so a good question

A daemon would be pretty damn scary obviously, but I hate the idea of plague getting me so the Skaven of Clan Pestilens or monster of Nurgle would do it for me. Wouldn't be overly fond of something like a Cairn Wraith either.
Awake O Dead, for there can be no rest for ye beneath the earth. Let the splintered bones burrow from the grave pall. Let cold fingers grip time-worn blades, and unseeing eyes survey the fields of slaughter. For your time has come once more. And the dead shall walk.

Exactly. As well as the fact that something like Dark Elf Raiders aren't going to worry you if you live in Stirland on the borders of Sylvania, because they're never likely to come sailing down the River Stir, and you have more pressing concerns, like what the hell is that shrieking in the middle of the bloody night!

    The mother in law.

In other words, if I lived in the Empire, the terrors of mutation, witch hunters, zealots, beastmen, tax collectors and the living dead are all just a part of life. I think the greatest fears of an adult who isn't exposed to evil on a daily basis would be every day things. Anything that could threaten my family would warrant fear as well as subsequent acceptance and preparation.

As a child in the Old World, my greatest fear would have been the Skaven. They would only come out at night after mom and dad have gone to bed and take me away to Skivverblyte.

But as a peasant of the Empire, would you even know what a Hellcannon was?

    Re: Scariest Baddies

I think one of the scariest things that could happen to you would be your village getting targeted by Nurgle's Carnival or what it was called. I can imagine looking out of the house, being scared almost to the point of insanity and then just out of survival instinct moving away, unable to think because then you'd have to face the horror, and then getting ambushed by this. Don't think you'd even have the nerves to move or scream - you'd be so horrified, you'd just stand there as it crawls towards you...

... At least you're unaware that your soul will become a new plaguebearer...

Hot contenders for the spot are things that do something almost as horrible and do it differently. Getting eaten alive by a sneaking, cowardly swarm of crypt ghouls would be a bother.

Beastmen. warriors of chaos is far to the north and demons quite rare. Undead show up from time to time and even more commonly orcs and goblins, but in the empire beastmen are everywhere they cna be hiding in every bush behind every turn of the road. They're the reasons people in the empire dont travel anywhere alone and that welthy people take the riverboat to places.

After Beastmen i'd say orcs and goblins followed by bandits and raiders. These are more mundane problems than vampires demons and chaos invasions, sure those happens from time to time but far more people die from attrition with the enemies that live in the same area as the humans.

Ghouls most probably, as they won't only kill you (or even devour you alive as Beastmen might do as well), but there is a chance you are turned to such a vile creature yourself by becoming infected after being bitten...

Dark Elf corsairs, being a slave to the dark elves would be a fate worse than death I would think.

Apart from that, maybe a Hellpit abomination, those things are weird looking. Pretty much anything amorphous and spreads disease is kinda freaky to me.

I think Morghur would worry me the most. To me, he is the intersection of the mortal world and chaos, incarnate. The madness he inspires makes even the fevered dreams of wizards look tame by comparison.

Tax collectors, especially since I've hidden two sacks of turnips in the basement.

On a more serous note I'd have to say mutation and disease, those are the enemies you can't even try to fight with a pitchfork.

    Re: Scariest Baddies

I'd have to agree with TheDungeon. Beastmen would probably be top fear - they would be the most common monster threatening to lurk around every tree for a peasant of the Empire. They are ferocious, brutal and cunning, the beast that hunts you back.

Second would be Orcs and Goblins. Like ants, there's never just one, so if you ever encountered one, I can only imagine the dread that comes from knowing he has a hundred friends about to appear right behind him (or more likely, any direction you choose to run).

If I live in the countryside? Beastmen and/or orcs. Both are bigger than me, stronger than me, more violent than me, and come in numbers to boot!

If I live in the city? Nobles. Just don't cross them...

    Re: Scariest Baddies

zealous witch hunters and the like, tax collecters inspire hatred not fear... i'd say the baddies of your own race, cut throats, robbers etc as they as a peasent you will know about and understand. Other baddies are acknowledged but ingorance is also bliss, being an educated man in the empire i'd struggle to leave my house every morning thinking of what baddies are out there not including my fellow humans.

Given what the historical Norse raiders, unsupported by daemons or anything else, managed to do to the historical Europe, if one lived anywhere near a coastal region I would definitely fear the Norscan Raiders the most. This is particularly true because they seem to have what the historical ones never did: a viable cavalry force to spread fear and fire much further from the actual landing grounds. The imperial/brettonian navy is all well and good, but they can't be everywhere all the time.

Dwarven Slayers that set up a situation that allows them to save your life, then proceed to get you drunk and trick you into vowing to follow them everywhere, for ever, into steadily more tedious and ridiculous adventures.
