    Biovores: Worth it?

Simple question to Tyranid players; are Biovores worth investing in? the reason I ask is that I’ve noticed that the Biovores are £25.00 and come on a 60mm while a Pyrovore is £22.50 and comes on a 60mm also.

I already have 30 + spore mines from previous editions so I was thinking on buying the Pyrovores (with their awesome model and all) and fielding them as Biovores with a few alterations to the model to make it more biovore-y (open up the gun barrel, make the sack more squishy and remove the bloated sack from underneath it’s head).

Great unit, doesn't do so much against meq enemies though and does require you to be in synapse range. Worth using against non meq and in all comers lists.

Against MEQs it might be a bit difficult to kill a whole lot of models, but I find their ability to pile wounds onto things unparalleled in the codex. You can convert them if you put some thoughts and effort into them.

Many think the Pyrovore is the better model, regardless of cost - there are some excellent conversions into counts-as-Biovores around.

Biovores are a good unit, it's just that they do what everything else in the book does: kill infantry. When buying units, you're generally looking for anti-tank or TEQ.

Still, they are a perfectly usable unit, there is nothing wrong with them.

its what i think too, in my opinion the Pyrovore rules shouldn't be in the book and the model should be the Biovore. every attempt at the biovore has left it with a goofy grin or some other problem, not to mention looking lost on a 60mm when it was designed for a 40mm.

Biovores come with 60mm bases now? Mine (current sculpt, but the pre-finecast metal version) came with a 40mm.

I happened to pull it off its old base to strip the paintjob reccently, so I'd like to know the proper size base for when I rebase it.

I have the old metal ones i almost always run a unit of 3 and they ALWAYS make their points back usually they are the mvp. I once even almost killed a unit of maahreeens with them as i got 3 hits so with around like 30 hits on the unit like 6 of them died. was pretty sweet. They really dont like s8 blast templates though.

They're a luxury, not a necessity. It's like a Harpy, Deathleaper or Venomthropes. They'll help and do just fine.

    Barrage-sniping is nice.

It's worth noting that while a lot of Tyranids can kill infantry, not many can kill infantry that are far away and/or hiding. It's hard for Tyranids to redeploy, so being able to put firepower in one place and then another place 60" away on the next turn is handy.

I'm playing with 2 x 2 Biovores in the shooty list. They're exellent in this type of list for their points cost. And again for what you pay for them, they do their job of chipping away at Meqs, especially if your looking at Biovores in the context of the list you've put them in, i.e. lots of cheap barrage, lots of cheap str 4 shots(better if OA'ed) and some nice medium strength support from MC'ed devourers and you're suddenly making your opponent take a huge amount of negative dice rolls.
    .......... alittle more ....... a little more.

I'd say at 2000+ points go wild. You'll still need to be careful with elites below that to be sure you have enough AT going, though with melee AT viable you may do just fine with Furious Charge infused Termagaunts or something; IMO still keep at least 2 Hive Guard and/or Zoan squads around to supplement AT and keep the enemy on the back foot. I wouldn't advocate against taking three sets either.

Point is, don't take them in exception to everything, but consider them as a means to eat those pesky snipers, dev squads, etc... Also, they have area denial in those spores, which is pretty neat.

"This pack contains one Tyranid Biovore - a finely detailed resin cast kit that comes in eight components (including three spore mines), and is supplied with one 60mm round base and three 25mm round bases. These miniatures are supplied unpainted and require assembly - we recommend using Citadel Super Glue and Citadel Paints."

i noticed this first in the current Nid Dex they were sitting on 60mm bases as well (page 77 and for a better comparison page 78 has a biovore next to a trio of zoanthropes in the background of the double page spread).

They are nightmarish to weak back-line shooting units, especially because you can snipe in 6th edition. Tau, Guard, Orks, Necrons knocked out of their barges. Anything not in a tank with a 4+ or worse save can get hammered by them. You can pick power-klaw nobs out of a squad before assaulting with a monstrous creature, land it on a las-cannon dev-marine and make him take all the saves until he dies (if you roll a 'hit'), etc. Units of three are really cheap (points-wise) and tend to do lots and lots of damage.

Keep them out of LoS of S8 guns, pick the correct targets, and go nuts. I've been disappointed once because I couldn't roll a hit to save my life, and every other game they have done really well.

Oh, and the occasional pinning is always nice, too!
