Cool The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 11 (July painting and Aug WIP)

The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 11 (July painting and Aug WIP)

This is the thread where you post what you painted in July.

Please post nothing else for 1 week, and then after the first week of August please feel free to comment on the work of others.

    Mission Statement:

It is the goal of The Tale of Fantasy Painters, and all Tales for that matter, to help fellow gamers paint their armies by providing them a place to find support and encouragement.

    The Tale:

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months.

The way it works is that painting would begin in September and then in the first day or two of October a thread will be put up where you can post what you had done in September (this trend will continue for 12 months). You can include as much information as you wish, but some good things to include along with the picture are: the units, the total points for that month, conversions, highs and lows, plans for next month, and a number between 1 and 6. The number is important because it has to do with feedback.

A week after the initial thread is created you can then (and are encouraged to) add feedback on the work of others. Due to the large number of people who take part in these tales it is suggested that you only comment on those that have the same number as you. Of course if there are ones that really catch your eye, or you are a trooper and want to comment on them all, that is obviously awesome.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

    Men and Boys:

Because this is harder than you would think ... As last year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month I have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two categories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q : When can I join in? Does it have to be at the start or can it be any time?
A : Join in any time.

    Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes, but if you can do this time after time then you can probably commit to more. Feel free to sign up multiple times to reflect the amount of work you plan to do (for example sign up for Beastmen X2 and submit 400 points a month, or Beastmen Men + Boy submit 300 points a month).

    Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example if you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : What do I do when I'm done and the tale isn't over?
A : First thing to do is to include an army shot (everyone loves an army shot) and then it's up to you. Either stay on and paint a model now and then to take part, or start planning for the next tale. If you are really cocky then you can sign up for ANOTHER army is see if you can blitz it in time.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Q : Can I *insert something here that results in more painting*?
    A : A thousand times yes!!!

Q : Can Doi drop out?
    A : No he can't.

Q: Can other people drop out?
    A: It's up to Doi.

I am doing better than last month - this month's update only needs basing and some washes and then I am done. Good thing about much WIP done...

here goes my besieged troops recieve more reinforcements

    Wissenland Helblaster-emmanuelles kiss

Despite their provinces baroness being in nuln the troops of wissenland have sent reinforcements iking an appearae soon.Wissenland isnt usually able to get access to such technological marvels but baroness emmanuelle secured this warmachine from nuln.

    Valten-saviour of Kaskad

An as yet undiscovered hero of the empire.although barely 17 years old he has the strength and wits of a man much older. Intelligent beyond his years young valtens bravery and fearlessness hasnt gone unnoticed amongst the defenders of kaskad.

12 huntsmen-not sure on name maybe the deathjacks.?
Markus wulfharts men are starting to appear on the outskirts of kaskad ready to take down the monsters within tamurkhans hordes.

    Highs
Valten is my favourite empire model and i managed to get all 4 versions of him. I really enjoyed painting him and although my armys very character heavy i couldnt wait to paint him and another version but you have to wait for that....

    Lows
None really. I did intend to submit my greatswords this month but i decided against it as i changed the ogre unit filler and got another 10 to add to the unit. I plan on these being my final unit in this tale before i carry this on in the next tale. I tried to get a unit of wissenland crossbows done but i didnt manage it so they will be next months entry

    Points
    Valten (warrior priest) 99 points
heavy armour and shield-not really wysiwyg but it represents his blessing of sigmar/iron resolve skill.
    Sword of anti-heroes

    Helblaster 120 points
    12 huntsmen 96 points

Total for this month 315 points

    Empire total so far 2266

    Army: The Empire / Middenheim

Unit: 20 Spearmen incl. Full Command & 1 Witch Hunter

    Points: 180

    Total Points: 1020

    The full army:

Well, of course for it to be the actual full army this also needs to be included:

I know the bases still need to be done, but I am declaring this project to be done now anyway.

EDIT: Just remembered that I forgot one mini. And not just any mini, but the greatest wizard of the Empire:

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 11 (July painting and Aug WIP)

    Army: Tomb Kings

Unit: 6 skeleton horsemen, 10 skeleton horse archers.

    Points: 6*12+10*14= 212

Total Points in the Tale: 1870+212 = 2082

HIGHS: All cavalry done for the army for now. In the (further away) future I will add more Necro Knights, but not for now or in a while... Love the regular horsecav models but they are just not very cost effective in the game. Being able to deploy a prince in them might make them worthwhile... Luckily horse archers have their uses!

    LOWS: not game effective.

NEXT MONTH: WIP on first Tomb Guard, finishing the final normal skellies. I expanded the tomb guard models in my possession to 20, but this will turn to 30 or 40 before the end of the tale. Think that would make a nice big final project to round off the army!

Another joker for me I'm afraid - have only really in the past week been able to dig out my paints and stuff after the move. Hope to be back in the running this month though.

ARMY: The Sons of the Mountain, 2000 point Ogre Kingdoms Army

UNIT: Firebelly + Hunter riding a Stonehorn.

HIGHS: Achieving my best model turnout after taking so long over the iron blaster, and actually seeing the end in sight for this army. Not that I want to finish them, but they’ll be, I’m embarrassed to say, my first fully painted army after 20 years in the hobby. The firebelly was great fun to paint, and quick (only took me about 5 days, which for me is lightning), which gave me plenty of time to work on the stonehorn which I’m so pleased with. I really like the different arctic themes I’ve come up with for all the creatures in this army, it really ties them into the ogres on their snowy bases.

LOWS: My fake granite bases actually weighing nearly as much as real granite on large monster bases! Luckily the stonehorn was only pinned and not glued to his base, but that presented it’s own problems as it made holding him to paint very fiddly.

    POINTS: 380 + 120 = 500!!!

    DICE ROLL: 5

NEXT MONTH: Mournfangs and Thundertusk stand-in.

    MOMUS: Mens

    DICE ROLL: 4

UNIT: Terradons, jungle swarm, saurus unit filler

    POINTS THIS MONTH: 223

BUILD/CONVERSION: Unit filler for saurus converted from BBQ sticks and toothpicks.

HIGHS: Painting up the unit filler was fun even though its not a proper unit and im pleased with how it looks.

LOWS: The terradons were crusted up with cement or something so were much worse than the previous set. They broke a few times during stripping/rebasing so i didnt have the heart to put them through the stress of trying to mount the skinks on them.

NEXT MONTH: Skinks? Saurus? Not sure...

For a full army shot, see the following:

That's what the tale can do to your army if you're in it! It's about twice the size it was before! Over 2000 points produced and counting. Final expansion will be a Tomb Guard unit of at least 30 strong. Will comment on other posts soon!

Well it's not finished yet ^^

I finally finished my entry for july :

Army : Orcs & Goblins (boyz category)

Unit : 20 night goblins with spears and shields and command group (90 pts) : 1292pts/1200pts

    Dice roll : 3

Highs : the model count rising.

Lows : painting 20 night goblins in one batch is quite long. Highlighting and shading take quite some time, but it's worthy in the end.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 11 (July painting and Aug WIP)

    Comments for July's work :

@ colonel kane trine : your latest work is really great. I find the painting much better than your previous entries. I particularly like the archers. Keep it up !

@ emperor norton : nice and clean paintjob on those models. The blue is very striking. I can't wait to see them totally finished (basing and stuff)
And your version of nicodemus is really nice

@ grhino : the lighting and slight bluriness of the pictures surely don't do justice to your model. But from what we can see, those 2 units look like great addition to your army. The shields lack some colouting though that could enhance the overall look a great deal. Do you plan to (re)paint them?

@ DAGabriel : ha, some evilness. I definitely like your latest work, the different touches of yellow and orange are very convincing and appropriate. Keep it up !

@ gogs78 : I like big units, and surely your spearmen don't disappoint. The very good paintjob is just the icing on the cake. Great pictures too. I'd like to see what you're gonna do with the banner

@ laborious : good job this month ! I"m fond of your basing, the snow effect is great. One criticism : the face of the stonehorn is too dark for my taste. I think you should at least paint the teeth to better identify the mouth of the beast. The rest is just pure awesomeness !

@ momus : I feel your pain with those terradons. I'm glad you manage to properly build them and paint them. The unit fillers are great and funny. The small chameleon could do with a bit more highlighting, now it just look like a blurp of purple paint.

I'd like to thank all of you who commented on my last month work. I'd like to apologize also for not commenting back then. I neither didn't get time to paint that much as well that's why I'm presenting my work a bit late this month (pictures to be posted in the following days).

Keep it up everybody and good luck for this last month !!

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 11 (July painting and Aug WIP)

Little update - I did some more painting yesterday - some of the clothes plus finishing the beards.

    Renaissance Dwarves

    Greatswords

    Traditional Dwarves

Runelord - beard needs a bit more work yet.

    The last pony rider.

    Rangers

    Slayers!

My plan is to do a few hours every weekend, until they are all fully painted. I think I can do it within 3 more sessions. Then that will leave me with a couple of weeks to round off my Dragonslayer and something to finish off my Gnomes (80ish pts - suggestions please!) for the ToFP 2011/12. The Chaos army will have to stay at 1135pts - I just can't make that happen too!

    Comments time:

@ CKT: Nice, and you are right, Valten is a cool model.
@ EmperorNorton: Cool work with a nice shading on that blue robe.
@ grhino: Nice cavalry and a real lot of them. Even if I hate the GW skellie horses.
@ gogs 78: Very nice for Helves, lovely style on the great jewels for such a large unit.
@ laborious: love that fire belly and the hunter is visually effective, too.
@ Momus: Love that unit fillers, great work. The Teradons are – serviceable?
@ azhagmorglum: Nice ones, love the banner.
@ Purplebeard: Lovely, especially the runelord. Could work well with my evil ones, too.
