Thread: Toughness Tests against a Unit

    Toughness Tests against a Unit

Ok, this issue came up in a game last week and I couldn't find anything to refute this rule, so I just went with it...

I hit a unit of Temple Guard with the Plague Furnace. The Temple Guard also had a Toughness 5 Character in it. At the start of combat, the Furnace caused the Temple Guard unit to suffer d6 Toughness Tests or suffer wound with no armor saves.

With the Temple Guard being T4 and the Character being T5, which toughness should those d6 tests be taken at?

Page 10 of the Rule Book does say, "Where a model (or a unit) has more than one value for the same characteristic, as is the case with cavalry, for example, a characteristic test is always taken against the highest of the values."

When taken for the unit you use the highest. When taken for individual models you use it's own.

IIRC this is explained right near the start of the big rule book, it might be under a heading of units taking characteristic tests?

If there's an entry concerning characteristic tests on a unit vs. tests on a model, it isn't under the Characteristic Tests entry on page 10 of the big rule book.

Depends on the wording of the furnace. If it is "the unit takes a Toughness test" then you can use the highest. If "X models take a toughness test" then it is on the models' toughness.

There are very few characteristic tests (other than Ld) for units rather than models.

If you mean the enshrouded by fog effect, it hits individual models. So you test on the toughness of the model that is hit.

The rules reference you're looking for is in the BRB FAQ:

"Q. For characteristic tests, is the best value in the unit always
    used? (p10)
    A. If the unit is required to take a characteristic test, the best
value in the unit is used. If every model in a unit is required to
take a characteristic test, then each model uses its own best
    value instead."
My code does not have bugs, it has undocumented features...

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for.
