    Devlan Mud

Anyone know what paint is the closest to the old wash? It doesn't have to be GW as I mainly use Vallejo anyway, but I'm running out of DM and all Vallejo does is inks for washes.

It's not ideal as you're paying over the original price but a seller on ebay.co.uk still has some Devlan Mud.

As am I. I've actually found that if you transfer the army painter ink to the devlan mud pot you can fill it about one and a half times for roughly the same price.

There isn't really any noticeable difference between the strong tone ink and DM as far as I've seen.

I did a post on this very thing with pic comparison.
Army Painter Strong Tone is a dead ringer as far as I'm concerned.

When people ask me, "How do you build your army?"
I tell them its "The ten-zero factor, coolness ten, combat effectiveness... zero."

Being an ink does it have more of a tendency to stain as opposed to running into crevasses like a wash does? And if you thin it down, what do you recommend as a medium?

I don't think it is a ink, at least not in the "GW ink before the washes" way. I guess the name is more so that people don't confuse the dips with the washes. It's not shiny.

    Is this not close enough?

It was hailed as the new name for Devlan Mud with the changes, and from use seems to be pretty much the same.

I also use Army Painter's Strong Tone. Perfect replacement.

Agrax Earthshade, the thing Askari linked to, is quite different in tone and consistency. As part of the big new GW paints review I did on Tale of Painters.

On the white Stormtrooper's legs you can see the difference:

Left leg (from your point of view) is undilluted Devlan Mud straight from the pot, the leg on the right side is Agrax Earthshade straight from the pot, both over white primer.

As for how to water the Army Painter stuff down: just use Water. The terms "ink" and "wash" have always been used pretty much synonymously.
