The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 12 (JUL completed work & AUG WIP)

Welcome to the Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012!

What is the Tale all about?
The aim of the Tale of Painters is to get an army fully painted within the next 12 months.

For most 40k armies the size will be somewhere between 1000 and 2000 points, but you can go higher if you want to (and you're crazy enough)! AI, BFG and Epic armies will be slightly different, but as long as you choose an appropriate sized army for your game system then there's no problem.

Once you've chosen your army, your target is to paint roughly 10% of your army each month. For example, if you've chosen a 2000 point army then your monthly target would be 200 points. The Tale runs for one year (September 2011 to August 2012), so if you stick to your 10% monthly target then you'll only need to paint for 10 months of the year.

To cover the months when you can't/don't paint, you get 2 'Jokers'. You can play a 'Joker' at any time (provided you haven't used them both up!), which essentially means that you don't have to meet your target for that month. They can used for real life events (such as births, deaths, marriages, exams, holidays) or if you're just having a bad/slow month. If you play a 'Joker' then feel free to post a suitable image instead (of a Joker or something funny).

What is this thread all about?
This thread is for completed entries for last month (up until the 10th) and work in progress (WIP) for this month (from the 11th). Please only post completed work for last month until the 10th.

From the 11th, feel free to post any WIP pictures of what you're going to be painting this month, army lists, background stories, battle reports, questions, and comments on anyone else's posts. You can post as little or as much as you like in the thread, but please keep it WIP from the 11th of the month. Do not post any completed work for this month until after the next thread opens at the start of next month.

If you have not posted by the 11th of the month, then you will have to play one of your 'Jokers'. If you have failed to post by the 11th of the month and have already played both of your 'Jokers', then unfortunately you will be out of the Tale.

    Frequently Asked Questions
Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : Unfortunately yes, you are now too late to join in this Tale. Don't worry though, the Tale will be running again late this year (sign-up in August for a September start).

Q : Do I have to stick to just one army?
A : No, you can paint more than one army if you want to! Quite a few people like to paint more than one army at a time, so if you fall into this category then just list each army you wish to paint when you sign up. Your armies don't have to be the same size, but please aim to paint at least 500 points for each army, otherwise you're probably better off starting your own plog if you just want to paint lots of random things. For the purposes of posting, as long as you aim for 10% of your combined total each month then it doesn't matter what order you paint things in. You could paint 10% of each army each month, or alternate armies each month, or 5 months of one army followed by 5 months of another army, or whatever combination best suits you. Regarding Jokers, you would only need to post a Joker if you didn't paint anything for any of your armies that month. If you painted one army but not the other, you would simply need to post Army 1 (x points) and Army 2 (0 points).

Q : Can I paint more than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, and it's great to get ahead. BUT, we would like you only to post 10% (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 10% per month. For example, if you're painting 2000 points that means 200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc. This way you won't depress those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, but we would like you to try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example, if you're painting 2000 points and you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character/tank/unit?
A : This happens a lot. If your character/tank/unit is over 10% of your army you could simply paint him/it/them over two months (the sort of time your general/tank/expensive unit deserves!). For example, one year my monthly target was 200 points and I painted a Stompa (600 points). I split painting the model into (roughly) 3 months of 200 points, posting new WIP shots each month.

Q : Do I have to play my 2 'Jokers' during the Tale?
A : No, you don't have to play them at all. If you can manage to paint/post for the full 12 months then congratulations, you'll have exceeded your target and truly embodied the spirit of the Tale!

Q : Can I 'buy back' my 'Jokers' during the Tale?
A : Yes, you can 'buy back' your 'Jokers' during the Tale. If you have already played a 'Joker' and manage to get a month ahead (either by painting double one month or painting a bit more than your target for a few months), then just state in your entry for that month that you wish to 'buy back' your 'Joker' and I'll take it off for you.

Q : What's with the D6 roll in your post?
A : The D6 roll was an idea introduced to help ensure that everyone gets some comments on their work. If everyone rolls a D6 when they post (I use the [D&D dice roller] if I don't have a D6 to hand), then we should have six roughly equal groups each month. Then, if you comment on those people who rolled the same as you everyone will receive some feedback. So, if you roll a 1, comment on all of the other 1's, if you rolled a 2, comment on all of the other 2's, and so on. Of course, if you have the time/want to, there's nothing stopping you from commenting on anyone's/everyone's work.

    ##############################

I'll start off by posting my completed entry for last month. Feel free to copy my post to use as a template (edited to suit your army), but as long as you post your Monthly total, Total to date, Unit(s) painted and a picture then that's fine.

If anyone has any other questions, please direct them to misterboff (me).
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 12 (JUL completed work & AUG WIP)

    misterboff's Deathskull Orks: July 2012 (D6 roll = 5)

MONTHLY TOTAL: 345 POINTS (150 TARGET)
TOTAL TO DATE: 1637 POINTS (1350 TARGET)
    JOKERS PLAYED: 2

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
'...the Boneheadz family of Death Skulls once overran and plundered an Imperial penal colony, and wore fragments of convict clothing printed with black arrows for generations afterwards.' - Waaargh The Orks!

    UNIT(S):
10 Flash Gitz (inc. 9 with More Dakka, 3 Ammo Runtz and Painboy with Cybork Body) - 345 points

    BUILD/CONVERSION:
The Flash Gitz are Black Orcs with Kombi-weapons from the Nobz kit, some 2nd edition Ork Meltaguns/Plasmaguns and crosshairs/gunsights from the Boyz/Loota/Burna kits to count as Gitfindas. The Painboy is a Black Orc with a bosspole, tabard, Cybork head, Buzzsaw and Kutta-arm from the Nobz kit (to count as Dok's Tools and an 'Urty Syringe respectively). The Buzzsaw is stuck on the end of the underslung choppa arm from the Stormboyz kit. The Ammo Runtz are from the Nobz kit, the Stompa, and the Loota/Burna Mekboy's Big Shoota backpack.

    PAINTING/BASING:
The first colour is the basecoat, the second is a wash and the third is a drybrush. The bases are simply Vomit Brown followed by Citadel Sand.

    Nob Skin: Orkhide/Knarloc/Thraka/Camo
    Ork Skin: Knarloc/Thraka/Camo
    Grot Skin: Gretchin/Thraka/Camo
    Blue Face: Enchanted/Asurmen/Ice
    White Face: Astronomican/Badab/Skull
    Teef: Dheneb/Ogryn/Bone
    Eyes: Mechrite
    Pants: Chaos/Badab/Adeptus Battlegrey
    Top: Astronomican/Badab
    Straps: Adeptus/Badab
    Metal: Boltgun/Badab/Mithril
    Rust: Calthan/Macharius Solar/Devlan/Mithril

    STILL TO DO:
Use them against some Space Marines!

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: I've had the Flash Gitz idea for years, but never managed to be able to acquire the 2nd edition weapons (via ebay) until recently. I'm really glad with the way they turned out, and with them being mostly armour they were relatively easy to paint too...
Lows: ...but they were a royal pain in the @r$£ to put together! I thought 'Black Orcs + big guns = Flash Gitz' was going to be easy - but I was so wrong! There was a lot of hard work involved, and copious amounts of cutting/filing/green-stuffing to get them looking right. I think if I did it again I'd just use the Nobz box instead (or the rumoured bitz pack)...

    NEXT MONTH:
I was going to split my Flash Gitz over two months, but after a little encouragement (not that it was really needed) I just had to squeeze in a Bommer...

    Undying 14th Cromorian Legion (IG): June 2012 (D6 roll = 3)

MONTHLY TOTAL: 215 POINTS (MONTHLY TARGET: 175 POINTS)
TOTAL TO DATE: 2000 POINTS (TARGET TO DATE: 1750 POINTS)
    JOKERS PLAYED: 0

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
Just spent a week writing reports for work and really don't want to write another essay. Most of the background fluff is already written about anyway...

    UNIT(S):
Commissar Lord with Powerfist - 85
    Primaris Psyker - 70
Officer of the Fleet & Astropath - 60

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:
Each one of these guys is uniquely converted from the Cadian Command Squad Box (CCSB) and what is becoming a fairly decent imperial bits box. Anyway, a rundown for reach guy is as follows.

    Commissar Lord:
    Head - Hellhound Tank Commander
Torso - CCSB, with medals removed.
Right arm - CCSB powerfist with rank stripes removed stuck onto most of the Cadian Shock troops grenade throwing arm to get the pose.
Left arm - Both the arm and gun are from the CCSB, but the gun was in a right hand, so I had to swop it.
    Legs - CCSB

    Primaris Psyker:
Head - Catachan Sentinel Pilot head. Mohawk removed.
    Torso - CCSB
Right arm - Both shoulders are from the CCSB Cloaked sniper parts. The arms are from... well, I forget... Lots of cutting and shaping to get them to fit around that axe.
Left arm - Speaking of which, the Axe is from a Black Templar. It was given to me ages ago by a friend, I don't even remember why, but I finally found a use for it.
    Legs - CCSB

    Astropath:
Head - CCSB with blindfold added with greenstuff.
    Torso - CCSB
Right arm - Cadian Shock Troopers box, iirc. The cloak is added was extended from the left arm with greenstuff.
Left arm - Shoulder and arm from the CCSB Sniper, hand and sword from the Cadian Shock Troopers box
    Legs - CCSB

    Officer of the Fleet:
Head - Combination of two heads from CCSB. Face from one, hat from the other.
    Torso - CCSB
    Right arm - CCSB
    Left arm - CCSB
    Legs - CCSB

    PAINTING/BASING:
A brief explanation for the colours I haven't yet used to any large degree this tale.

Black: Painted Codex grey and then washed everywhere with graveyard earth/chaos black mix and once with pure black on the recesses. Finally highlighted with grey.
Blue: Regal Blue which was given a dark wash. Drybrushed more regal blue, then heavily drybrushed with regal blue/fortress grey mix and finally lightly drybrushed with fortress grey.
Red: Red gore then blood red layers. Washed with graveyard earth/chaos black mix. On the cloaks there was a blood red drybrush on the commy there wasn't. Then heavy blood red hightlights followed by light blazing orange highlights.

    STILL TO DO:
    Nothing on these things.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Had fun converting and painting some non-run-off-the-mill guys
Lows: Only painted 4 guys for the Tale (despite that being well over my points requirement). The reason? My daemons needed some love, so I spent a lot of time this month of converting old metal prince into a flying nurgle prince. Included some pics to him too.

    NEXT MONTH:
Got a couple of chimeras still to paint. And more daemons on route... we'll see what actually gets done.

The four dudes I painted for the IG

    Lord Commissar

    Primaris Psyker

    Astropath

    Officer of the Fleet

The two regimental advisors in the Command Squad, with its transport

    The NURGEL PRINCE

Chaos Marines Project Log - Just a click away... you know you want to...

    Record as of new CSM Codex: 8 wins/ 2 losses/ 0 draws
    Record as of new Daemons Codex: 1 wins/ 1 losses/ 0 draws
    IG + Daemons Allies: 16 wins (6 tablings, 8 crushing victories, 2 1-VP scrapes)/ 0 losses/ 1 draw

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 12 (JUL completed work & AUG WIP)

    Comment time:

@Xazil: I've not seen too many Thunderfire Cannons, but is that a conversion? I think quite a lot of different bits look very familiar, but maybe I'm imagining it... Good work again, I especially like the gold tipped shells. Your army shot is great too - so many Dreads and shields!

@djc: It's great to see some more infantry, and I particularly like the poses/weapons on the Sergeants. The Hydra is awesome too, and looks like it's received some return fire...

@Monsterzonk: That's a fantastic looking unit. You do love you big hammers don't you? I think my favourite is the one behind him holding up the sign - he looks angry that he's not being taken seriously!

@matt_17: Another creative month for your Guardsmen. All four look great, but my favourite is the Commissar. The head reminds me of Bane and the Powerfist reminds me of Hellboy. The DP looks great too, especially the Nurgle symbols on its wings.

    ##########

How's everyone else getting on in the final month of the Tale? I must admit, I've nearly finished my Bommer, but I need to find some time for my army shot because I'm in the middle of redecorating two rooms (one of which is where I normally take my pictures). I might end up having to put them on my bed!

After seeing the list in the rumours section I can see another Ork base Tale for me in a year or two. I think I'd best start saving now...
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 12 (JUL completed work & AUG WIP)

Give_me_a_d's All Things Chaos: July 2012

    Monthly Total: 100pts (100 Target)
    Total To Date: 903pts
    Jokers Played: 2

    Background/ Theme:
A growing warp rift has spawned a daemonic host and is beginning to attract Chaos marines

    Unit(s):
Last month I started off Ahriman, as he's a massive 250pts I claimed 50pts last month and this month is 100pts, the remaining 100pts will be done for the next months submissions to finish.

    Build/ Conversion:
Ahriman is the standard classic model, although I have snipped off his base tab and will be putting him on a 40mm base when finished.

    Painting/ Basing:
Broadly the same start as my Thousand Sons – Mordian Blue, Iyanden Darksun and Calthan Brown which is the base for gold and for horns, skulls etc. The gold I'm doing a bit differently and starting to use some of the new GW paints. I started with Auric armour gold, which is actually a lot more yellow than I thought it would be. I've given it a wash of Ogrn Flesh and a highlight of my truly ancient gold which is a GW paint but is 20+ years old and is very nearly dead.

    Still to do:
    Finish Ahriman

    Highs and Lows:
Highs: what I've done this month hasn't taken long which is good as I've had visitors and be away so not had much time to paint
Lows: The afore mentioned Auric armour gold being basically metallic yellow making me rethink how I was going to do the gold.

    Next Month:
    Finishing Ahriman

Was our August entry due the 10th? If so I am lagging behind. But I already did 2000 points. Still I would like to show my finished dakka jet for the final month. and maybe a an army shot?

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 12 (JUL completed work & AUG WIP)

    My replies for the month:

misterboff - Nice orks, varied in look and equipment and brought together with the blue clan colour and demeanour. The thunderfire cannon is the stock metal model, the techmarine very detailed and the cannon has all the little bits added on. Thanks also for the time spent running the tale and encouraging me to get through to my first fully painted 40k army.

djc - Continuing to love the converted beastmen guard and the very sweet forgeworld hyrdra. They all come together very well and nice paint jobs.

Monsterzonk - Excellent inquisition squad. Great attention to detail and colour choices. Lovely models.

matt_17 - Very well done command figures, good colours on uniforms. The nurgle prince left me agape when I saw it. Excellent work on theming him. A great centre point for an army.

give_me_a_d - Great detailing and blending work over Ahriman. Love how the colouring is bringing him all together.
