The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 11 & August WIP

The end is nigh! This is the last thread to include WIP. Next month's thread is just for posting this month's finished painting and then... Well, then we just keep on painting board game miniatures but call it ToBGP 2012-2013

There's a signup thread for next season right here!

Welcome to the Tale of Board Game Painters

    What's it all about?
A lot of us wargamers have bought or been given some really impressive board games through the years that have had one extra special selling point; cool miniature game pieces. Mine (and my brother's) include Hero Quest, Space Crusade, Blood Bowl, Space Hulk (both editions) and most recently Chaos in the Old World.

When we opened the boxes we all dreamed of how awesome it would look (in just a few weeks, right?) when we'd have painted every single miniature to the best of our abilities. Awesome atmospheric board pieces with super realistic miniatures all over. Then a few weeks go by, sometimes a few months and for way too many of us a few years. The games are still awesome but all that paint seems to have taken the wrong turn at Albuquerque.

Enter the Tale of Board Game Painters. Now we're going to use the collective power of motivation to really get it done! Participants choose a miniature board game from their collection - one's enough for most of us; after all, they've been unpainted this long already, let's not get carried away - and paint it up in 5 to 10 batches over a period of 6 to 12 months.

At the end of each month (or the beginning of the next actually) we take photos of the month's good work, post it on that month's show off thread and give comments and encourage our fellow painters to keep on truckin'!!

More detailed description of the time plan and structure can be found in the OP of the original signup thread here!

Here are our active painters at the beginning of this month:

Please let me know if you feel any of the info is wrong or if I've misinterpreted how/when you're painting the games.

    Board games finished: 12

#7: Solun Decius - Chaos in the Old World - 60 minis painted
    #8: robscott5598 - Godzilla Kaiju World Wars - 6 minis painted
    #9: steevn - Cadwallon - 20 minis painted
    #10: Sk1ndred - Mansions of Madness - 32 minis painted
#11: Solun Decius - Mansions of Madness, Forbidden Alchemy Expansion - 8 minis painted
    #12: robscott5598 - Shadows over Camelot (Second set!) - 30 minis painted
Let me know right away if you've finished a full game and I haven't added it here or if the number of minis is wrong. I'm easily confused by all this

In this thread we start by posting last month's painting, our batches of finished miniatures. Include info on what the miniatures are and what portion of the whole game we feel we've finished. Then we comment on each others good work and begin posting WIPs of our next batch.

Don't forget you can still sign up anytime!

    Happy Painting!

Here's my bit of SDE for the month:

So now there's only Starfire left to do, but the big dragon will take me some time. Oh, and her spawning point. But then the game is finished!

I'm sorry I've been missing in action, it turns out taking care of an infant and working 60 hour weeks while applying for jobs 3,000 miles away tends to eat up one's time. I am going to really push myself to catch-up and finish this month, though. I think i should be able to finish the set in time for the final month, but I might not be able to post this month either.

But don't give up, I'm still planning on showing off a fully painted set of Heroquest by the end of the tale!

Nice work guys! Good luck with getting the Heroquest finished iamjack42, I like the chests Solun. How do you paint rusty metal without using metals?

Here is my work this month. First up the Seadrake

    The Heldenhammer

And all the remaining auxiliaries from the grand alliance ships (I had two left over from my first two ships which I painted way back in November...)

With that, the grand alliance is finished!

Im left with the The bloody reaver from the dreadfleet and its auxiliary, and then the ruler/turny thing/wind gauge stuff. Then it'll be finished!!

Great month's work for those of us who are still in it

@iamjack42: It's no problem. Your Tale has been pretty great so far. I hope you manage to finish the set by the end of the month(ish)

@HereBeDragons: Regarding the rusty chests, I just got a new RMS color called rust brown, so I figured I'd start there Then some orange and for the shiny metal feel some insanely sharp bright white highlights. *ding*

Here's a little bit of WIP from me this month:

Re: The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 11 & August WIP

Ok guys, I love seeing all the fantastic work done around here lately. Both sets of those little dragons are sooooooooooo awesomly cute.
And HBD, great seeing your finished alliance fleet. really well done.

ok, so I was out of it last month and then some, sorry for the delay in posting, I reinjured my previous back injury and spent the better part of four or more weeks in a nice relaxing self medicated comatos state. Here however is what i was able to finish, between now and then....

Some more Heros for my ubber gigantic Warhammer Quest project.

The Witch Hunter. Tried to go all Solomon Kane on this one and especially like the "travel worn and dirt stained" cloak edges.
And he has some pretty cool looking muddy boots. This is probably my favorite of all the "official" Games Workshop models made for the game.

The Bretonian Questing Knight. Tried some non metallic metals for the gold to make him "brighter" than most of the other characters.
Really happy with the finished figure.

The Empire Warrior Priest. I have the original model for this character but really didn't care for the static pose of him. I wanted something more inline with
the dynamic poses of the original four plastic heroes that come in the boxed game, and many of the expansion characters are also in cool "lunging foward" or "mid-action" poses. So I grabbed an extra model of the priest from Claustrophobia and rebased him. I think he just perfectly fits my idea of a GW warrior priest anyways....and I get an alternate leader figure with a lantern so bonus. Sadly the clear coat i used for this figure keeps attracting dust like nobody's buisness. The photos even show some when I thought he was fine to take pictures of, need to find some fix for that down the road

The Dwarf Brewmaster expansion character was another of the guys from the old Deathblow magazine which never got any "official" GW model.
I saw this Scribbor Resin one online and felt he fit the role perfectly.

Re: The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 11 & August WIP

    and some more heroes here........

I use this Confrontation mini from Rakham to represent my Bounty Hunter expansion character for Warhammer Quest, as again, there is no "official" mini for it.
Had a lot of fun painting this one. Wish I kept the mixture formula for those reddish leather leggings, such a nice color I got there, and can't seem to replicate again! grrrr...!

some more Banshees, this time in reddish hue. These will serve multiple duty as both Banshees for WHQ, "Doom" markers for my Warhammer 40K Eldar Army, and can also be used in my D&D minis games, and as expansion monsters for the D&D board games like Wrath of Ashardalon.....

Speaking of which. I got sidetracked yet again..........

    a Fire Drake.

And because any D&D board game is incomplete without them....

Some Beholders, just so the party members can have some bowel liquifying moments of absolute terror before having to turn in their now dead characters to the DM.

A standard Beholder. The original party destroyer. Dusted off an old painted model and redid a lot of details and highlights. one of my most enjoyable painting sessions ever.

And an Undead Beholder. For those even creepier moments, when your dungeon is all "dead" and deadly.

...when a living beholder just isn't scary enough
Great stuff robscott! Nice to have your ridiculously huge entries back in the tale
I think the living beholder is my favorite out of the bunch. And maybe the colorful questing knight. That's great stuff right there!
