Tale of Board Game Painters 2012-2013 - Signup Thread

Welcome to the Tale of Board Game Painters

    What's it all about?
It's about taking miniature board games, painting the miniatures and posting photos of them each month in order to give and receive encouragement and motivation to finish the whole box within a realistic time frame.

    Long story:
A lot of us wargamers have bought or been given some really impressive board games through the years that have had one extra special selling point; cool miniature game pieces.
These can be old classics - Heroquest, Blood Bowl, 1st ed. Space Hulk - or super detailed eye candy from the recent surge of successful boxed games - Super Dungeon Explore, Zombicide, 3rd ed. Space Hulk - or anything in between.

When we open the boxes we all dream of how awesome it will look (in just a few weeks, right?) when we've painted every single miniature to the best of our abilities. Awesome atmospheric board pieces with super realistic miniatures all over. Then a few weeks go by, sometimes a few months and for way too many of us a few years. The games are still awesome but all that paint seems to have taken the wrong turn at Albuquerque.

Enter the Tale of Board Game Painters. Now we're going to use the collective power of motivation to really get it done! Participants choose a miniature board game from their collection - one's enough for most of us; after all, they've been unpainted this long already, let's not get carried away - and paint it up in 5 to 10 batches over a period of 6 to 12 months.

    How it's done:
The format has been very relaxed, and we simply get some significant amount of minis done each month - a small group of monsters or a single hero is enough - and then mark each month that we got something done.
It is however very helpful to plan the goal and organize the minis into batches, so here's an idea of how to do that:

Board games come in all shapes and sizes so we can start by deciding how long we're going to take, e.g. 6 months or a full year.
Next we split our game pieces into batches, planning to paint each batch in one month.

If you're on a 6 month plan it could be like this:

Month 1: Painting in September - show-off in Oktober
Month 2: Painting in Oktober - show-off in November
Month 3: Painting in November - show-off in December
Month 4: Painting in December - show-off in January
Month 5: Painting in January - show-off in February
Month 6: Painting in February - show-off in March - Finished Game in March!!

A 12 month plan will not be finish in March but instead continue:

Month 7: Painting in March - show-off in April
Month 8: Painting in April - show-off in May
Month 9: Painting in May - show-off in June
Month 10: Painting in June - show-off in July
Month 11: Painting in July - show-off in August
Month 12: Painting in August - show-off in September - Finished Game in September!!

You can also start a plan anytime and make it any amount of months, just as long as you're getting those minis painted.

    Jokers: non-painting months
I think it's a good idea to leave room for one joker per 6 months, so those on 6 month plans split their total painting into 5 batches and those on 12 month plans split theirs into 10. This is not necessary but real life does kick in every once in a while and we wan't to be prepared.
In practice we simply mark a non-painting month red in the schedule and then move along. No one is thrown out of the tale, but they're schedule is hidden once they seem to not be returning.

As an example, here's last year's 6 month plan for Chaos in the Old World:

    Batch 1: Nurgle
    Batch 2: Khorne
    Batch 3: Tzeentch
    Batch 4: Slaanesh
Batch 5: Skaven (from the Horned Rat expansion)

Then one month out of the six from September to February I can fail as miserably as I like and still be on track.

Then in the end of each month (or the beginning of the next actually) we take photos of the month's good work, post it on that month's show off thread and give comments and encourage our fellow painters to keep on truckin'!!

This thread is for signing up!
Find an applicable board game, take out the minis and split them into little groups. Figure out how much you can do in a month and then type up the batches. Reply to this thread with the game you want to paint and, if you're prepared, also what's in each batch and how long it'll take.

Here are just a few of the awesome minis finished in the ToBGP 2011-2012:

    I'm in with Space Hulk.
I will go for 12 months, but I'm not sure how to divide up the minis yet.
(Plus I kinda ruined my Genestealers, so I will see if I can salvage them; I have a second set of these new on the sprue, though, so I could use those if the first batch is beyond saving.)

Well Solun, if you'll have me again, I'd like to sign up for finishing my Warhammer quest and all it's expansions carried over from last tale, along with the Talisman core game and the expansions also carried over from last tale. Try to wrap up these huge projects which I have been working on for years....

Also I'll throw in the ring that I would like to wrap up Wrath of Ashardalon by tales end, start and finish Zombie Plague within the last half, and start and finish Betrayal at House on the Hill within the first 6 months.

But you know me, and i'll probably get sidetracked with about another half a dozen board games started in part as well somewhere along the way.....

That would be grerat robscott! And yes, that seems to be your style. As long as you're posting at least 700 finished minis per month it'll all be fine.

I'm really sure there were more posts on this thread. At least one from HereBeDragons, and a reply from me to both EN and HBD.
    Where'd they go?!?

So I'll answer EmperorNorton again: Yay, Space Hulk. Many have tried in last seasons Tale but none succeeded to complete it. May you be the first!

All you other people with unpainted board games or the urge to get some. Man the **** up and join us in painting them!

I actually got a warning for my post and I assume HereBeDragons did as well.
    Better not talk about it.
Nothing to see here, move along.

    Yay!
I checked my set the other day and found out that I had already basecoated the Terminators. So that gives me a little head start.
My original set of Genestealers does not seem to be salvageable, though. At least not until I find something to strip plastic minis.
But as I said I have another set of these lying around, so I'll just use those. Not sure what colour scheme to go with on these, though. I don't like the one they have in the studio pictures.

Do they have a household cleaning project called "simple green" available where you are? If so, it would be perfect for easily and gently stripping plastic minis.

I've heard that mentioned before, but it's not available locally.
I could order it online, but it's fairly pricey.

Ahem... yes... lets all just forget about that shall we?

I was signing up with Warhammer Quest, with modern equivalents of the box contents, hopefully including a home made 3D tile set.

Re: Tale of Board Game Painters 2012-2013 - Signup Thread

    Hehe, ok great!

We're pretty few starting this right now, and I afraid I won't be kicking in until the holidays, when my SDE expansions arrive.
Still, we'll start the first thread and get this going. If it seems we might just as well just be checking out each other regular logs, we can make that decision, but for starters we should keep this going.

Start of next month then there will be two ToBGP threads then. One first WIP for this tale, and the other the final final pics thread for last season. See you then!

Hi, I'd like to sign up with, yawn, Space Hulk 3rd edition. Hopefully this will be the motivation, kick up the bum, I need to get them painted. Plus my son will be happy as he has been moaning about the lack of painting done so far. Fingers crossed I don't get distracted. Realistically I'll need the full twelve months as I have a variety of other projects to complete.

Sorry I haven't been on these threads much in the last few months, I've been too busy hanging my head in shame. After starting so well with my Space Hulk set the varnish ruining about 7 models just put me off. I'm up for finishing it this year though!

Since 6 months is optimistic, I'm just going to go month by month and if (WHEN!) I finish with time to spare I'll make a start on Dreadfleet.

Heh, that's a lot of Space Hulk.
Do any of you have any suggestions on how I could paint my Genestealers? I don't like the blue/purple scheme.
I am thinking of going either with black or bonewhite/purple.
Bright yellow could be cool, too, but I kinda hate painting yellow.

Should we rename this: "The Tale of Space Hulk 3rd Edition Painters 2012-2013"?

I hope seeing everyone else's progress on the same models will help encourage you all to keep going! Hopefully me, robbscott and solun can throw some variety into the mix too. What is it you are actually planning on painting Solun? I don't think you declared officially.

Well since I need to paint loads of models for Warhammer Quest too perhaps I could switch between the games each month to give a bit of variety too. Well help me not get bored of painting Blood Angels and Genestealers too so win-win. :-)

Excellent. I'll add you new guys to the list and the official first WIP thread will be up before the end of the day.

I will actually not be painting a board game for the next few months. I'll still be keeping the tale rolling and hopefully encouraging you guys to stick to it.

@Mr Potato Head: Great to have you on board. There's no yawn in painting a full set of 3rd ed. Space Hulk
It'll be an impressive project and I hope we can all help each other out with finishing what we're starting here.

@Daemonslave: Great to have you back! I'm very much looking forward to your finished Space Hulk. I bet mixing it up with Warhammer Quest will also help through added variety.

@EmperorNorton: Strong contrasts can look excellent, like Black/Bone White or (if you dare) Purple/Yellow.

@HereBeDragons: Haha, or "The Tale of SH and WQ painters! I think different versions of same/similar minis will be fun to see.

The first month's working thread is up!
