The Tale of Terrain Builders 2012 part 2 – sign up now!

This is the thread to sign up for the Tale of Terrain Builders 2012 part 2. So how did part one go? Check here for some finishing shots yourself? Here are the participants that made it, congratulations to all of them:

    When does it start?
The next Tale of Terrain builders will start on September 1st.

    What is it all about?
The aim of The Tale of Terrain Builders is to help motivate those involved to start and complete enough scenery to fill a gaming board. It is an ongoing project for all who want to participate.

    How does it work?
During the first week of a month you post your finished terrain. The remainder of the month is for posting WIP pictures of what you are building and to comment on the work of other participants.
Ask Questions, see many different interesting ideas and help others with tutorials and advice.

What do I have to do?
Because not everyone can spare the same amount of time for various reasons, there are different levels of commitment. The standard level of commitment (Mens) is to create a single, reasonably sized piece of terrain per month. The lesser level of commitment (Boys) requires the completion of a piece of terrain every other month, but with the commitment to show progress each month! In order to have a level of participation for everyone there is also the Noob level (name possibly up for change), for this you just have to finish one piece of scenery.
A single piece of scenery at least the size of a hill or building will be considered one piece. A barricade, tree, rock spire or similar terrain can be entered in threes to count as one piece of scenery. I made a picture for a quick overview:

If in doubt, terrain that covers a diameter of roughly 6” is what we are going for, but this is a loose definition. Since the aim is to fill your board with terrain the rules are somewhat lenient.
A note on building whole Tables and Dioramas: simply break it down in monthly amounts of work for the level of commitment you entered in and we are happy to tell you what we think of it.
Just build and have fun and everything should be OK!

    Can I have a break?
Because people have real lives: “yes you can!”. You get one 'Joker', to use for a month you want to skip. During the Tale you can ‘play a joker’ by posting an appropriate picture and an explanation if you like. You should still comment if you have the time.
But the other five months you have to come up with a piece of completed scenery or some WIP pictures. That sounds easy but the first two tales prove it is not.

In six months we will all end up with some terrain for gaming, which is awesome!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q : How do I join the Tale of Terrain Builders 2012?
A : You should join us right now! Just post in this thread and you are in, it starts that easy… Since Noob is just one piece, you can also join any time you like.

Q : Can I build more than one piece per month?
A : Yes, you can build as much as you like. The maximum you can enter is two pieces a month and they will be awarded as such. We aim to have fun as a group and to help each other as much as get things done ourselves.

Q : What happens if I build a GIGANTIC piece of scenery?
A : If you create a truly epic piece of scenery, we want to see it. We also want to see how it is done so you use months of WIP up to the finishing post and it will be accounted for the epic piece it is that way.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes, we love background stuff! Write as much as you like, we will read it and rejoice. It might also help to put the piece of scenery in perspective.

If you have any questions, please ask them and I will answer them as soon as possible.

This is also a Tale of the people striving to become better and so there is a poll above with some suggestions for change, feel free to vote. Since it is a service it should be the best you can get.

Well the poll is up and I am signing myself up for this tale as a man. I hope to build a skirmish game sized transportable table.

I wanted at least to vote to rename Noob into Apprentice, but the poll does not seem to work. I will wait a day and ask a mod after that.

Count me in for some 40k action, can't get the vote to work, I would vote for a month of challenge to try something different, also think n00b could be changed to "Apprentice"

Count me in for men's. I've just started the arduous task of a gaming table. I have plenty of scenery to be getting along with. I'm going to start with the relatively simple stuff but I hope to do some more adventurous stuff later.

Re: The Tale of Terrain Builders 2012 part 2 – sign up now!

I started a volcanic wasteland table with modular sections a long time ago, but regular 24" or 12" sides meant it was too easy to guess distances so I never finished, knowing it wouldn't be as fun to use as intended.
Now that both 40K and fantasy allow measuring at any time I'll finish it, and use it to make my entry into 6th ed more special.

    - Apprentice - Journeyman - Master - has a certain level of sophistication, hahaha

I guess I'd like to enter the masters category then and go for one 24"x24" or 12"x24" section each month. Those are big sections, but they won't be as detailed as much of what others are doing, since it's the base table, rather than detailed terrain.

Re: The Tale of Terrain Builders 2012 part 2 – sign up now!

Second post updated and the mods are informed about the poll, sorry for the inconvenience.

    @Erazmus_M_Wattle: Adventurous is good.

    @Harry: I remember an elven city .

@Xazil: Welcome, good to have you around once more.

@: Solun Decius: Volcanic = bright/colourful, looking forward to it. I like the Apprentice, Journeyman, Master levels, sounds good. Other improvements of Noob are most welcome as well. The reason I am sticking to Mens and Boys is mostly because it is recognisable. You check the thread and know the deal. But anything (most things) can be done if the crowd wants it.

Mens. Lots to do for my own table, and I just got gifted with a Realms of Battle on semi-permanent loan.

Re: The Tale of Terrain Builders 2012 part 2 – sign up now!

@Little Joe: Well, as of yet it's just volcanic rock, which isn't really all that bright and colorful, but I might try to work some active volcano tiles in there too

For a bit over a week now I've been doing some massive house cleaning and organizing, mainly in the garage and in my hobby working room. This means I now have some space in the garage to do the more messy hobby work. This is making me excited to get to work on terrain where I'll be using a lot of plaster and sand and polystyrene foam. Good times ahead!
