lore of death on war machines

    Hey

How does the lore of death spells work on war machines, 2d6 minus target str for example, that would be 2d6 - 0 right?

Spirit Leech: Use the best Ld of the crew.
Aspect of the Dreadknight: Each unit contributing models in an assault against the war machine may need to test for Fear.
The Caress of Laniph: Use the highest S of the crew.
Soulblight: Very straightforward: The warmachine's S characteristic is never used anyway.
Doom and Darkness: Completely straight forward.
The Fate of Bjuna: Use the Warmachine's Toughness as this is a ranged attack.
The Purple Sun of Xereus: Warmachines automatically fail Initiative tests.

I thought they wouldn't get to use the strength since war machines fail all characteristic tests except leadership and toughness. Is it because it is not a characteristic tests?

Yes, it is not a characteristic test so you use the highest value.

Is this essentially the same for Chariots?

Chariot has I of 0 so does it auto fail if hit by Purple Sun?

No, a chariot has a combined profile, and will use the highest stat (probably the crew)

Certain attacks mention "use the lowest value" - otherwise its always the highest available to a model.

Most chariot models have crew and steeds, so the chariot's Initiative of 0 is frequently the LOWEST value, while the steeds or crew have the HIGHEST value. For example, a High Elf crewman has the highest Initiative at 5, a Giant Wolf has the highest Initiative at 3. Both these values are higher than the their respective chariots' Initiative values, and as such would be used whenever you need to use the highest Initiative value.

If you need to use the lowest value (such as against one of a Giant's special attacks), you would usually use the chariot's Initiative 0.
