    Crusader Kings 2

This game has been out for a while now, but I only just picked it up a couple of weeks ago on a Steam special offer. Thought it deserved its own thread, because it's not one of the big name games that you can't avoid hearing about, and I reckon it might be just the sort of thing that Warseerites might be into.

So, who has been playing this unbelievably life-sapping game? I'm particularly interested to hear about people's experience of the mods. Thinking the Westeros mod looks like a good shout.

Can't keep the nobility in check for any decent amount of time, and when I actually do the Italians (Venetians) bribe the Pope into declaring me a heretic and HRE swoops in from the north and at the same time Byzantines start declaring casus belli on my southern provinces.

Almost as awful as real history

I also bought Crusader Kings II at the Steam summer sale, but I didn't find the time to dive in yet. This isn't one of those games that you can play for the odd half an hour. Having played Sengoku - basically CK II light, set in Japan - I've got high expectations. Before I start, I've got an epic game of Arsenal of Democracy to finish first though!

I bought it, but don't understand the game quite yet, so haven't had a proper game.

Yeah, it takes quite a while to get the hang of. There are some video guides on youtube, worth checking out.

    Re: Crusader Kings 2

I was going to a start a thread for this but decided to do a search first. The vets would be proud!

Why am I not surprised you started this thread, Odin? We've got the same taste!

I absolutely love the game; love it to hell! I really wanted to get into CK1, tried so hard to, but the constantly declining vassal loyalty and having to play it one pause at a time because of too much happening meant I had to throw in the towel before long.

First problem fixed for me - vassal loyalty is no longer an inevitable downward spiral. I can leave my vassals to be, only slapping down the odd rebellious vassal.
Unless you've set the game on max speed, there isn't too much going on to confuse you.

Things I don't like: playing primarily as the Roman (Byzantine) Empire, I still feel a little stymied by the game's emphasis on a feudal framework. Ditto for succession.
The few games I've run through, I find that after your initial monarch and his heir pass on, there is always extreme fratricide in the family, to the point where I'm losing promising family members and I have to whack the family members doing all the killing. Particular family members with certain traits I could handle, or even certain family lines, but when it's guaranteed every generation, across all lines of the family, too much, I feel.
Speaking of family, I think the family tree system could have done with a more organised layout. Aside from the ruling branch of the family, there's no way to view the extended royal family at a glance.

If there's one, and only one, thing that pisses me off about the game, it's the non-stop murder plots between courtiers. Both because of how frequently it happens, and because kill plot messages spam up my notifications box! >_<

Although I was only playing on normal, I never had anyone declare war on me once in over 200 years. A little odd, I felt.
I was a little perplexed about the lack of interfaith marriages - while I could acquire commoner brides, proposing a marriage between, say, my Roman heir and the daughter of the Seljuq Sultan, the offer wasn't even rejected, the system just wouldn't let it happen!

Is there any way of creating alliances without a marriage?

Odd bug I encountered: when the Mongols first showed up, I had a boat load of (highly qualified) Mongols showing up at court, and half of their spawning armies were marked as belonging to me! While I wasn't heartbroken about receiving 60,000 horsemen, upkeep free, the few times the Golden Horde converted...my monarch converted with them!

For those who got it on Steam, and this is 50% of the reason I was going to start the thread; how am I supposed to know when the game will next be on sale? I want to get everything in the bundle pack, but shelling out £40 when I've already got Xcom on the to-get list is going to put me in the financial hurt.

I just bought CK2 about a month ago. I've only had a couple of games completed to the time limit. I wouldn't mind knowing about alliances too. My latest game as Scotland I almost never had any foreign allies even with marriages. It was tough when England wanted to be mean to me. My personal goal was to take over the British Isles and form Brittania. This morning everything went perfect and I succeeded and got a large chunk on the continent as well. Most of the French coast from the channel to Spain.

Just started playing this again after a break of about 6 months. A lot seems to have changed. .. retinues, merchant republics etc. It's even better than before. Time to have a go at being one of the Orthodox or Muslim factions next I think.

I also got it on sale from a recommendation from another forum that I visit. I've succeeded in creating Britannia and I still have a good 150 years to go in my game. Having no desire for any of the other lands, I've embarked on a eugenics program, and in or two generations all of the ruling houses of Europe will be run by dwarfs. Why did I do this you ask, because it's funny.
