Realm of Chaos style Warriors of Chaos

So after a long break from the hobby (since WFB 4th edition) I’ve decided to try my hand at a new project – a Warriors of Chaos army.

As things stand I have no intention of playing WFB, I just want to get back into the miniature painting side of the hobby. Although, I will aim to make all of my units rules legal, just in case……..

I’ve chosen WoC as I’m a ridiculously slow painter, so a low model count army is a must – those skaven can stay in the loft for now! A low model count also suits me as I want every model to be different; that’s going to mean lots of kit-bashing, converting and trawling eBay for classic models.

The plan is for my army have an old school Realm of Chaos theme. This will give me loads of potential for conversions etc. Although, for varieties sake I’ll deviate a little from the old RoC ethos and this army will be a multi-god list.

First up I’ll be building and painting a unit of "counts as marauders" with the mark of Nurgle, hand weapon and shield. This unit will take inspiration from the RoC the Lost and the Damned book, and will contain marauders, diseased flagellants, pestigor, plague skeletons and plague zombies.

First up, here is a plague zombie that I’ve kit bashed from several kits. I love the new plastic nurglings, and I couldn’t resist modelling one pulling a rambling zombie along by its intestines.

    Comments welcome.

Just to let everyone know, the plague zombie is made from:
    1) an empire flagellant body and arms.
    2) the mace hand is from the beastman ungor kit.
    3) the shield is from the vampire counts skeleton warriors.
    4) the head is from an Enigma zombie (there are more heads than bodies in the blister pack).
    5) the guts are made from green stuff, except for the intestine being pulled by the nurgling. That’s made from two pieces of 28 gauge wire, twisted together and painted with liquid green stuff straight out of the pot.

A quick question for everyone. Here is a w.i.p. pesti(un)gor. Does his flail look OK, or is it too long?

Looking good so far, can't wait to see them painted. The flail looks fine to me

Seeing as this is more of a hobby project than a gaming army I’ve planned to use some fancy unit fillers as a way to explore some interesting modelling possibilities.

For my “chaos marauders” with the mark of Nurgle, I plan to scratch build a palanquin on a 50 x 50 mm base. Whilst playing around with ideas I thought that it would be fun to build a “mini palanquin” using the new plastic nurglings.

Here’s my work in progress. The palanquin fits on a 25 x 25 mm base, so it can sit in the front rank of a Nurgle unit to add some character.

I can’t decide between equipping the top nurgling with a banner, or a halberd. What does everyone think?

Loving the new Nurglings- makes me want to start a mono-Nurgle daemon army and I don't even know if that is feasible!!

A great start to your log.

I think that the flail would be better a little shorter.

The nurgling palanquin is very nice, which parts did you use?

Great start! Some very neat conversions!

Thanks for everyone's comments. I'm not a member of any gaming/modelling club yet, so the posts here are my only source of feedback and they are much appreciated.

The nurgling palanquin is made from four shields; three round ones from the ungor, marauder and marauder horse kits and a skaven triangular one to hold it all together. The poles are made of brass rod.

The three nurglings holding up the palanquin are from the plaguebearers kit – these ones all have moulded bases to keep them upright. One is directly glued to a shield; one has had the intestine it was pulling removed and I carefully drilled a ‘channel’ for the brass rod through the model; the front nurgling had the right arm removed and replaced with a tentacle made from thin wire.

The nurgling on top is from the nurgling kit itself. The staff/standard/halberd that he’s (it’s?) holding is drilled into one of the shields to aid stability.

A quick post holiday update. Here's a new converted/kit bashed pestigor and a diseased flagellant that I converted a while ago. I’m quite chuffed with the flagellant, although I think that it will be a bit of a stretch for it to count as a hand weapon and shield marauder!

I’m playing around with some test paint schemes at the moment, hopefully I’ll have something to show soon. I’m finding it tricky to come up with something that is cohesive whilst still differentiating between the followers of each chaos god.

Re: Realm of Chaos style Warriors of Chaos

Well, I’ve almost converted and assembled enough models for a game legal “marauder” unit (I hope that the imminent army book release doesn’t change minimum unit size!).

To keep with the Nurgle theme there will be 13 “marauders” (including full command) with an exalted hero to make it up to 14. In the fullness of time I intend to add extra models 7 at a time.

I still need to convert a musician. I was going to use the old metal plague bearer, but I felt that he was too big – I prefer the hero and champion (the pestigor) to tower above the rest of the rank and file.

I’ve decided that my musician will be a plague skeleton. That way I have a plague zombie, an ungor, a plague skeleton, a chaos hero, a pestigor, some nurglings and a diseased flagellant in the front rank – the full menagerie of Nurgle.

My plan for the musician is to turn these pieces -

Into something that is posed like this plaguebearer -

Here is my attempt at a plague skeleton musician for the MoN marauders.

I'm quite pleased with how he has turned out, although I'm not entirely sure about his club. What does everyone think?

And here is the unit, now all assembled other than the banner.

A question for those of you who game. Is a unit like this acceptable as marauders?

Re: Realm of Chaos style Warriors of Chaos

    @kardos – thanks mate.

Speaking of mixing it up, I've started to work on my Slaanesh contingent. First up, a standard-bearer w.i.p. that could become a MoS chaos warrior/chosen standard bearer, or potentially a MoS BSB.

I'm quite happy with it so far. I'm as yet undecided whether or not to add a shield to his/her right arm. I'm thinking a shield from the hellstrider kit. What does everyone think?

I can't wait to pick up the new army book on Saturday - after then I should have a better idea with which equipment to assemble the rest of my units.
