I've downloaded the sample to try out and I'd say it looks an improvement over the first Space Marine codex. Layout looks a lot better and it seems to explain its features better.

I'll more than likely get this at some point in the future as well as the actual book. I prefer hard copies, but feel that it would be easier to use, especially with travel to and from Uni. Though at the price, it probably wont be for some time.

I've taken some screen shots that show off the features of it:

Hope that helps show it to those of you with out iPads as I think GW only made videos for the Space Marine release.

It's about 5 times a reasonable price for an electronic document.

Ooooh, I was wondering if they were going to be doing that. Is it confirmed that there'll be FAQ updates then?

Well they did it for codex: Space Marines with the release of 40k 6th edition at least and I do not have an idea why they shouldn't do for the rest. Necrons is also included with all the 6 edition erratas built into the codex.

For Space Marines this was the GW post on homepage:

Remember kids: (taken from GW Legal page 3).

Please remember that Games Workshop does not produce its rule books or codices in electronic format - if you ever see any such material in electronic format, it is likely to be the product of criminal or infringing activity.

Ipad only? Why no support for laptops?

Because GW choose to ? I don't agree with that decision either, but I can only hope they'll release things for the other platforms in time ...

Sheeeeyit....I'd pay TWO dollars for one, and happily! LOL...stupid apple haters. My iPhone 3G is still holding a full day's charge four years later! Granted, it was good for two days when it was new, but get a samsung or dell battery to last four years, I dare you!

That is an interesting question. Maybe they didn't realize that itunes works on PCs? Maybe they designed the ebooks in such a way that they're impractical without a touchscreen? Maybe they got an exclusive contract with apple where apple only takes 29% instead of the usual 30%? Maybe because it's still in a test phase (why "waste" money on cross-platform functionality before you've proven the concept?)

As mentioned before (Re: Platforms and other devices)

They have released the books on iPad only in the iBooks format. They are not Ebooks, PDFs, Apps, software (in the everyday sense of the word) or any other format that works on Droid, Windows, Linux, Etch-a-sketch or EVEN iPhones, iPods or any other Mac related device (even their own computers). They work on iPads ONLY. iTunes has nothing to do with the format or what it runs on - it is a delivery system for products (Like a petrol station - it has many different fuels and you can buy them, it does not mean they will work with your device).

They have done this for many reasons that we can only speculate on - and there are probably economic, technical, Intellectual Property, Legal and a whole host of other reasons. If anyone has another device OTHER than an iPad, let me be clear . . . It will not work on it. The only 100% working version for EVERYONE is the printed book, the original multi-platform device.

Plus, if they were looking at the market, whether we like it or not, more people have iPads than other tablets combined, so if they are going to start releasing it on tablets may as well start with the one that more people have.

My Nokia basic phone is now twelve years old, never changed the battery, and it stills holds a charge for at least a week, depending on usage ... your point being ?

Oh, and even with several hours of use per day, the battery of my Samsung tablet holds its charge for at least 5 days ...

So, not really an i-Hater, but not convinced nevertheless.

I think it is almost mathematically impossible for them to sell an ebook at a loss, they would literally have to be giving it away, we are talking about a product which has zero production costs beyond its initial writing.

Still, I would appreciate the convenience of having codexes/army books on my iPad, but I'm not going to pay double when I already own the book in print.

I'd say the reason for the price is because they want to be consistant with the hardcopys (i.e books) and not have people whine about the fact that the digital copy is significantly less than the hardcopy... (it will happen if they do it)

Still at the price point they are going with for a digital copy, I wont be buying them.

Actually it's because they rightly assume that sales of the ibook will detract from sales of the printed copy, especially in those likely cases where hobbyists choose one or the other. At this price point they are ensuring that there is no (direct) lost revenue from those who buy the ibook and not the print copy. It means, however, that they are forgoing additional potential sales of the ibook at a lower cost.

    Prudent as always.

It has been stated ad nauseum that these iBooks are not just PDFs. If you're refusing to buy them because you think the pricing is not fair or the content is lacking, etc, then fair enough, but threatening to steal the content because your expectations vs. your "insider knowledge" of GW's cost of business doesn't mesh isn't constructive.
Absolutely, I would be rather surprised if printing/binding/distribution costs for the physical book ran to £8 per book, if Apple is taking 30% then GW are likely making more profit per unit by selling the physical book.

All of GWs Books must have a huge margin on them, charging £25 for a book, even if it is full colour hardback is way, way above the cost of production.
