    Gamers vintage

Hi all, I was wondering the following.

How many of you have played since 2ed?

And of those who've played since the "old days". How many of you are excited about the new rules?

I'm an old timer, and am generally pleased with the new rules. I'm kinda hoping that the whining about change is coming from the newer blood.

    No griping about hull points!!!

I've played since the day RT was released 25yrs ago, so I guess you can say I'm a old timer in the game. I still enjoy the game and whilst I am still to try out 6th edition I am looking forward to doing so and enjoy them on paper.

EDIT: I really should have mentioned that I started with WFB 2nd edition, it's suuch a long time ago now.

Started with titanicus & epic, had the rogue trader book but didn't do much at that scale until the release of 2nd ed.

Finding the changes for aircraft, psychic powers, and assault to be a little lopsided, and played more than a few games with complex units that just slow everything down as the saves are rolled one at a time.
I can kind of see where they were aiming but I don't think they've quite got there, so not excited but not driven off either.

    That's interesting.

I'd i initially thought that the psychics had found a happy middle ground in Between their dominance in 2ed, and relative absence since then.

I'll admit I'm wondering how my poor eldar will deal with fliers....

    Re: Gamers vintage

Well, I started with collecting and painting back in the 80s. The my first 40k related game was Starquest and then straight into 2nd.
Do I count as an old-timer?

I hated 3rd, and did not like 4th and 5th much better even if each of them was an improvement over the previous.
I do like 6th very much so far. Simply because my fun/fluff gaming works better at the moment. I use mixed lists, often in a stile of combined arms (can't deny my background).

6th offers all the nice gimmicks and makes higher point games attractive to many more players around me. In 5th it was hard to find someone willing to play over 1.5k. This has changed, the kids field allies and can often go over 2k, much to my liking.

Im a space crusade/2nd edition guy, I did have a go at 3rd but it just wasnt the same for me.

I quite like how theyve brought back some of the old stuff for 6th, but its still not the same.

I still play 2nd 40K (when I do) and more to the point nearly all of my miniatures are 80s/90s, and they get painted in the old "red edition" style too, complete with green bases.

Thats what does it for me, thats the 40k I bought into.
I dont HATE the new fluff etc but its just not my thing-I know what I like, and I stick to it.
Im still pumped to play a game of 2nd 40k after nearly 20 years, that says something about it IMO.

I just get bummed out a bit when I cant really engage too much on here because Im out of touch with the fluff etc.

Came into the hobby during 2ed and played solidly through to 3.5ed. I've since stopped going to tournaments (mainly because the local ones are crazy big) but still played casual games in every edition since - not much of 4ed though, come to think of it. Apoc is fun.

I'm certainly not upset by the changes in 6ed. Flyers and the new scenarios I really like; they're great things to be brought across from Apoc.

    Re: Gamers vintage

I've been playing since Rogue Trader days. I kept at it through 4th edition, after which I threw in the towel.

When I play 40K, I play 4th edition rules. I still use the older Codecii. I have no interest in spending any more money on new rules, Codecii, etc.

I stopped going to tournaments quite awhile ago when I realized it was all about the rules layers and anti-social gamer geeks. I like fun games, and the tournies just stopped being fun.

I've been playing since start of 2nd edition, quit when 3rd came peeking around the corner and only picked up again during 5th. I have to say I really do like 6th so far, with the exception of psykers as they are now.

    Re: Gamers vintage

I started with Space Crusade and Hero Quest. I played a couple of RT games, but not enough to say I knew it well. I had the RT book (it was damaged beyond repair years ago.. I keep meaning to get a replacement...) and a small SM army. At that time, however, I was far more into 'Space Marine', what had been Titanicus and would later become Epic. It wasn't until I got the 2nd ed starter set that I got into 40k. And by then I was more into space hulk than 40k.

However, 2nd ed does have a solid place in my heart as 'my' 40k. When I think of what 40k should be, most of it stems from my 2nd ed experiences. I'm still an advocate of M values for 40k! That said, I think that 6th has addressed a lot of the things about 3-5th eds that bugged me. Although I've not got round to a 6th ed game yet, reading through the rules certainly made me excited about getting back into gaming. Throwable grenades, overwatch, fewer mixed abstractions... they all hark back to what I see as 'my' 40k.

The only thing I'm not so excited about is the flyer rules. For me, 40k is too large a scale to reasonably add flyers into the game. I am likely to be biased tho, as Im currently a 'nid player, and we have no anti-flyer stuff yet... Or it could just be that there were no flyers in 2nd ed. :-)

All in all, though, as someone who has watched the game develop over the last few years, 6th has me more buzzed than any edition since 2nd.

Like fliers, it is dominant in some armies and relatively absent from others

And of course the whole psychic card thing is a crap shoot - screw tactics, roll dice.

    Re: Gamers vintage

20/21 years doing the hobby, though I've hardly played the last couple of years.

Was initially hugely skeptical about 6th edition, but having seen some games played and seen the rulebook, my opinion has changed and it looks to be a general improvement over 5th.

On the other hand, I've not been at all enthralled by 8th edition for WFB, and the design line (primarily in WFB, but also a little in 40k) appears to be going way over the top. WFB to me now is no longer a game of fantasty, its now nonsensical (I'm looking at you new Empire Army Book).

    Re: Gamers vintage

I've played on and off since 2nd ed. 6th is fun, I like a lot of the changes.

The only thing I don't like is the need for tracking a lot of stuff. Hull points and Mysterious Objectives (or VP values in the Scouring) means a lot of dice on the table to keep track of these things. I hate dice cluttering the board and the models.

Although I suppose this is a problem with my memory and not so much the system itself.

interesting how the only replies are from old gamers.

nice to see adeptus titanicus get a shout. i wish GW still released games like that i spent most of my childhood on the breadline, yet even i could afford adeptus titanicus.

as for the new edition: i am still reserving judgement. there are a lot of changes to take in and i dont think i am fully up to speed yet.

I am an RT guy! Still got my first army!

As to sixth, I love it! I have played six games and thoroughly enjoyed each one. Best edition thus far, each game has felt like it used to back in the day! All my gaming buddies agree and some are as old and grizzled as me.

Fun, Fun! For the fun God!

Edit; flyers really add to the game so far! We tend to play 2000 to 2500pts and only take one each. I should think like all things, if you are 'that' guy who spams for advantage you will miss the point. This edition is about character, imagination, heroes and fun!

    Re: Gamers vintage

I've played since 2nd edition, with a few Rogue Trader games when I was a nipper, and think that a change is as good as a rest. Every edition has had bits I liked and bits I didn't. Sixth edition has some cool new stuff, and I generally think that I like the background settling down – the artwork's going back to the weird exuberant gothic rather than the harder, 'more black' gothic of third; and the background similarly has some leavening notes of humour and (misplaced) hope in amongst the gritty filth of the galaxy.

Ruleswise, I liked the 3rd edition transition – I found 2nd edition had removed the roleplay freeform approach of Rogue Trader and replaced it with micromanagement; I liked the more abstract nature of 3rd. 4th and 5th were for the most part, simply honing and developing the big change of 3rd. 6th seems to have added back in a lot of stuff I liked from previous editions and (in the few games I've played) feels much more natural and intuitive.

    Re: Gamers vintage

I started with Space hulk first edition, then the original space wolves codex, right at the start of 2nd ed.

2nd ed to me was great, you had the chance for ever lowly trooper to win against impossible odds, and the bizarrreness of somethings that went on on the table top was immense.

When 3rd came out, i carried on playing, but it just felt vey plain and boring, you could guess and understand what each army could do, would take and the immediate tactics, generally because you bought stuff in blocks, and had to take xy unit to counter yx units.

stopped playing before 3.5, and came back at 5th, liked 5th, lots of change compared to 3rd, and things seemed to flow better (apart from wound allocation)

6th ed comes closest to 2nd than any of the other iterations in between, and randomness is good, it means that your (or your opponents) auto play army, has to do more to actually win, characters can be taken out, and reduce units effectiveness, objectives do more than be just some place to stand, and the musical chars scenario is no longer a game winner.

I like 6th ed, its makes a refreshing change, with some minor rules tweaks on teh basic 3rd ed rules, its made a far better game than anything since 2nd ed finished, why couldnt they have done this version at that point i will never know, but i guess things have to evolve and grow.

I came on in late 2nd Ed (1997). I complain a little about new rules, because I'm a curmudgeon who doesn't like adjusting to change.

I actually wasn't a big fan of 2nd. I liked 3rd better, but that may be because I'm a chess player. A little more control struck me as a good thing. Don't get me wrong, I had fun with the wackiness of 2nd, but I am really not a fan of the new random-terrain table, nor the Warlord table. Most of the 6th Ed changes are okay, but those bug me.

    Re: Gamers vintage

I've played since RT. 6th is a fun system and I feel it's better than 3rd, 4th and 5th. Can't really compared it to 2nd as I was a teenager and gaming was different then as was my mindset. There are still too many issues with 40K for me to really enjoy it though and see it as anything other than "alright" for an occasional game. Lack of an activation system rather than IgoUgo; too many units within army lists that make no sense to bring to the table; rules like challenges that are intended to add a cinematic vibe, but are broken and seem not thoroughly thought out.

    Re: Gamers vintage

Started with Space Crusader/Hero Quest and then into 2nd end 40k and 4th WFB. From a few games with some mates and from reading it seems to me that 6th is essentially still the 40k I stopped playing, with a bunch of new stuff I'm not terribly keen on. (Random warlord powers, random psychic powers, flyers, emphasis on bigger games, challenges) So good for GW they got a new edition out, but it'll be the first edition I don't buy.(Not counting RT as that predates me playing)
