Kato Sicarius of the ultra marines, and his "surprise attack" is stolen from pink panther

A more resent copy has been servitors in the marine codex, closely match the description of the mothership pilots in BSG with their mutterings and what people treat them to mean

I've seen it pretty comprehensively debunked recently.

    hope thats usefull
Yeah, this one spawned a whole wave of "Dark Angels are Gay" sentiments back in the day

I'd like to add Inquisitor Karamazov for consideration. Not really a pun (though nor is Dante or half of the others in the strictest sense) but anyway:-
A Dostoyevsky novel called "The Brothers Karamazov", featuring a story called "The Lord Inquisitor".

Back in the days when it was "cool" to hate Dark Angels instead of Ultramarines

He is already in. Under "F" for Fyodor Karamazov.

    Don't forget Dante's Inferno Pistol!

Good one, will be added later.

    primarch magnus- magician
Magnus and magician don't really have anything to do, Magnus is just a name meaning "The Great".

also guardsman marbo, a play on words for rambo the stallone 'one man army' character.
Is already there under "S" for Sly Marbo.

lion'el johnson (i think ive spelt that wrong) and the dark angels chapter:
Of course that has to be added.

Dante Alighieri was the Italian poet who penned the Divine Comedy, in which Dante himself is guided through the Circles of Hell, purgatory and paradise.

Also, the thousand sons homeworld is probably a reference to Shakespear's Tempest.

Yeah, missed it on the first scan through Sorry.

I would have hoped that Dante's Inferno pistol was obvious enough. I was a sad panda when it got renamed.

Magus is magician. Even then basic Dickensian naming is hardly a pun in and of itself.
    Abaddon isn't a pun it's a big bad-ass name for a big bad-ass dude.
The rest are literary references, pop culture shout outs, in-jokes or thematically similar concepts.

Don't forget that Commoragh sounds awfully similar to Gommorah from the Bible, also renowned for its sick and twisted ways. Add to this there is a smaller Dark Eldar city called Shaadom, then its pretty obviously Shaadom and Commoragh (Sodom and Gommorah)

I know. But "Busters of literary references, pop culture shout outs, in-jokes or thematically similar concepts" just didn't do it to capture people's attention Seriously: at the moment we are collecting the stuff under a WIP title "easter eggs" because we couldn't agree on one good title. Suggestions on that are also welcome

Well, the Space Wolves have Erik Morkai and his twin brother Irnst the Wise, who are apparently based on 2 characters from a British tv show. Can't remember the name of the show however.

That'd be Morcambe and Wise. Comedians rather than characters but yes.

It's Morecambe and Wise. Erik Morecambe and Ernest 'Ernie' Wise.

I hadn't made that connection before. How droll? Funny though.

I actually laughed when I read that. Touché. PunBusters is good enough, it's just one of those terms that often gets misused and I like to help non natives (and some natives, to be fair) understand this simultaneously vague and complex tongue.

Whilst I agree its not really a pun, the name does appear in Revelations. From memory, Abaddon is some sort of evil creature that leads a host of 'wasps' (?) to plague mankind before the apocalypse.

I believe Prospero is a magician in Tempest.

Also here's one, in Codex Chaos Daemons, there is a story about a little girl and her dog making her way through Tzeentch's labyrinth. I assumed this had something to do with The Wizard of Oz.

Abaddon is a fallen angel (sometimes depicted as a "fallen star") who holds the key to open the gates to the Abyss and unleashing the plagues of demons upon mankind. Kinda like opening the Eye of Terror.

Not really a "pun" but I think some of the Gaunt's Ghosts books made references to US Comedy M.A.S.H.

There is a reference to the 4077th and Milo was akin to Radar (I think he turned out to be a psyker..)

Actually the apocalypse doesn't directly state that he's a fallen angel. It states that he is the angel tasked with guarding the abyss where the devil I'd trapped. He releases the devil after his thousand year imprisonment. It very much gave me the impression that he releases the devil at the command of the almighty since the devils release is part of the carefully orchestrated end times.

I've never read the book and considered Abaddon, sometimes called Apollyon, to be evil.

If GW want to use the name for an evil character I'm fine with that.

Oh, and of course, the entire premise of the Ciaphas Cane character is a homage to Harry Flashman. He is basically Flashman in space. Similarly many aspects of Gaunt seem inspired by Sharpe.
