It does make a reference to Eisenstein, referring to an ancient remembrancer... which makes sense, given Eisenstein was a film maker.
Id say that's more due to a a pop culture image of the diabolic influenced by Paradise Lost and the Divine Comedy, rather than scriptural references. It's the same reason people associate Lucifer with a devil figure, rather than an a reference to Nebucadnezza's fall from grace.
Also,
Acer Alba, Aceralbaterra - dog latin for "Maple White Land", the plateau populated with dinosaurs in Conan Doyle's The Lost World.
Adamantium - Adamant or Adamantine is from Greek myth, and basically refers to any very hard susbtance ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adamant )
Apex Twins - Aphex Twin, a British electronic musician ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphex_twin )
Attilan Rough Riders - Rough Riders as a term for Imperial Guard cavalry is almost certainly from the name for the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rough_riders ), especially since the original miniatures had slouch hats. Attila is presumably taken from Attila the Hun, even though the miniatures look more central Asian/Mongol.
Banshee - from the Celtic mythological creature. A lot of early Eldar background, including the names of craftworlds and significant parts of their religion, are taken from Celtic myth, combined with Greek myths in a weird mish-mash.
Barry Schmeisser - A Schmeisser is a name for the German MP40 SMG from WW2. The first set of Squats (or Space Dwarves) were all named after firearms. That also explains Blish Browning, Colt Stoner, Enfield Chambers, etc.
Belisarius was a Byzantine general: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belisarius
Talking of which, the Byzant Janizars are named after Byzantine and ironically the Ottoman Janissaries ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janissaries ). Presumably they were recruited from the eastern Mediterranean area.
Arbitrator Foreboding is a fairly blatant reference to Judge Dredd.
Godwyn-De'az patterns is probably a reference to Jes Goodwin and Juan Diaz.
The Rainbow Warriors is probably a refernce to the Greenpeace ship of the same name, sunk by the French in 1985.

At all: I will add ALL of the references (well, the ones that make a bit of sense at least), but I will need a bit of time, as I can only add them when I have time, plus I always have to dig up some sources, just that you all know.
@ AndrewGPaul: all of these are already in. Just to be clear: the second post lists the ones that already explained.
Ah, my apologies. I can't get to the German site at the moment (although the English site is OK), and I misread.
No problem. German site is working, just checked that: http://wh40k.lexicanum.de/wiki/Easter_eggs#.UCJF7KD3qf4Ah, my apologies. I can't get to the German site at the moment (although the English site is OK), and I misread.
I never said it wasn't working, I said I couldn't get to it.It must be on the blacklist.
As for Gal von Benko, the closest I can find is the Hungarian chess grand master Pal Benko, but that seems unlikely.
Yes, Gal von Benko is a hard nut, trying to crack that since a while. I think that the "Gal" part comes from the inventor of the Uzi. But von Benko is a total blank until now.
A quick bit of google-fu reveals that Pal Benko is a chess and endgame strategist and grand master. Not firearm related but is von Benko a strategist or tactician per chance? Gal is almost certainly Uzi related as previously stated, so seems plausible.
There's no background for "Gal von Benko" - it was just the name of a Squat miniature. In the beginning, every 40k miniature had an individual name. There's a fair few dodgy puns amongst the initial list of Space Marine and Imperial Army miniatures too.
You could spend months adding all the puns from Ciaphas Cain novels - Tobamorie the Techmarine, for instance - but a personal favourite is one of the chapter quotes from The Traitor's Hand

Maybe later, when I have access to Stuff Of Legends. As for the Cain books, that TVTropes link I provided is a good place to start, I think.
Indeed. But I will first have to take care of all individual items people have already posted here.Maybe later, when I have access to Stuff Of Legends. As for the Cain books, that TVTropes link I provided is a good place to start, I think.
Holy Orb of Antioch - Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch is a fictional weapon from the comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Stay golden, Ponyboy
My understanding is that Dan Abbnet was given the brief "Write me Sharpe in space" and so he went and wrote short stories in 'Inferno magazine' on Gaunt and the men of Tanith, that lead to the Gaunt's Ghosts novels being written. Which is probably why there is a lot of comparisons between Dan's stories and the Sharpe novels written by Bernard Cromwell.
Troubled by Ogres, then say no more. Read The Migration Patterns of the Ogre and you will know what to do with the pests in your larder. Just don't ask about the 'Trolls in the Pantry'. - Ogre PLOG
Please read the posts on the first page, it's already in the list, thanks.Holy Orb of Antioch - Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch is a fictional weapon from the comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Q'sandria, youngest of Eldrad Ulthrans proteges who belives Eldrad is alive. The name is a pun on Cassandra of Greek mythology who was given the gift of prophesy then cursed that no one would believe her after hse dispelased Apollo (from memory).

Essentially thou, the reference isn't about the historical battle - it's more about the film "Zulu".
