Marine chapter colour schemes...

Hi All,

I've recently picked up my painting again and I'm currently working on some Tau. After them however, I want to start painting up some pretty new marine models. The question I want to ask is exactly how different do you think Space Marine chapter colour schemes need to be fluff-wise (and game wise I guess)?

I ask because I LOVE the Sons of Orar colour scheme (especially the dull metal look of the laurels and Aquillas). However, I want the chapter to be my own, my own name, my own background and fluff, my own characters. I don't actually play the game, its just my own little project, so its not like it makes any difference to anyone else, at the end of the day I caould just use the colour scheme and say they are my own chapter. But just out of interest I'd like to know what other people think about the differentiation between colour schemes and what you think you could get away with. I'd like to not alter it too much since i really like it as it is, but you never know, depending on the feedback and what ideas I have I just might.

Yu could always just paint the helms or one of the sholderpads a different colour and say they are a an off shoot chapter from a later founding. Iv'e done it my self a few times and a simple change of helm colour changes them visually enough without making them too diffrent.

Marine color schemes need not be different from chapter to chapter. I mean how many marine chapters have all-black armour? Without looking up anywhere I can list at least three: Raven Guard, Iron Hands and Fists of Dorn. How many marine chapters have all-yellow armour? Yet again, without looking it up I can list two: Lamenters and Imperial Fists.

P.S I looked up the C: SM and found a fourth chapter with all-black: Black Consuls. Should have remembered that.
