    ChrisMurray's forces of Chaos

    Hello and welcome to my Chaos log. Some of you may have seen my Imperium log, well now I have a new log for my chaos forces.

    The start of this log is Chaos Daemons. I have always loved the Chaos daemon idea and models but the thing that put me off them was the small number of plastic kits and the metal kits (I hate metal kits and now refuse to work with them). Since the latest wave of Daemons was released there is now a lot more plastics around and more of the metals have been converted to Finecast. My armies are never built with being competitive in mind, I make and collect the models I like. This sometimes means that I will have options that many would say are a waist of points etc but I don't mind. So first up is going to be 500pts of Tzeentch.

    It's not the most exciting picture to open the thread with but here are the boxes of the models I have bought.

    The list (not including upgrades) is going to be:
    HQ: The Blue scribes
    Elites: 3 Flamers of Tzeentch
    Troops: 5 Pink Horrors of Tzeentch
    4 Pink Horrors of Tzeentch plus the Changeling
    Fast attack: 3 Screamers of Tzeentch

    So that is my 500 point list, I am having upgrades like a banner and bolts etc to make the points up (and to look cool). Once this 500pts is finished my current plan (subject to change of course) is to build 500pts of nurgle. I hope to get 500 pts of each good at the moment and then after that expand each of them to 1000pts then after this 1500pts and so on untill I have 2000pts of each good and the 4 daemon lords from FW. This may take some time as I'm sure I will also get distracted by Chaos Space Marines and renagade guard at points allong the way.

    I have already started assembling the models and hope to have a picture of the assembled force by the weekend.

    Regards
    Chris Murray

    Re: ChrisMurray's forces of Chaos

    Thanks guys for your interest, I'll try not to disappoint. I have made progress, I have even shocked myself with this as I am usually very slow to do anything. I have assembled the force.

    Here are two quick group shots. I'll take better photos once they start getting some paint on them.

    Thought I would give a quick opinion on the new kits.

    The screamers: These are great looking models that go together very easily. There are some extra bits in the box if you want to add some extra tentacles etc. There is some nice small detail on the body such as scales and eyes. The only thing that wasn't to my liking was because of the amount of small spikes sometimes pressing on the model to ensure a firm fit when glueing was shall we say, uncomfortable.

    The flamers: Again great models, very easy to assemble and with extra mouths\flames on the sprue to add if you choose. No complaints here, although they do look like they are going to be a complex model to paint.

    The blue scribes: Where to start. First of all this model (and the changeling) are the first finecast models I've assembled. I own other finecast models but they are still in their boxes after being checked over. These models had no imperfections on them that I could see. I hadn't realised finecast was so flexable. I'm used to dealing with FW models which is a much more solid affair, but overall I like the material although I am concearned that the changeling staff might fall off. The blue scribes are very detailed. All the little books, ink pots are all great. Another model that may be hard to paint due to so many different thing being in such a small space. The rear scribe is in once piece but the font scribe comes as a body, 3 arms, and a feather quill. The arms are very thin only a 2-3mm in diameter I would guess. This made fitting them hard and I would recommend if making them yourself maybe finding a way to pin them. Overall a great model, but I feel it comes in too many small parts.

    Overall the new models are great and GW plastics seem to be getting more detailed and easier to assemble with every new release. Finecast seems to be ironing out the quality issues (So all ways make sure you have a new batch not old stock in a store) and the detail is improving.

    Right I am staying away from home this weekend. So next week I should hopefully start painting. The squad of 5 pink horrors will be what I start with.

    Regards
    Chris Murray.

    Nice start, I have ordererd a box of the Flamers (desptite having some of the old metal ones) because they look really nice, I am thinking of using the metal horrors, lord of change, screamers and all the flamers as allies to my Thousand sons, so it will be nice to see a 500pts block be painted to see what it would be like.

    Re: ChrisMurray's forces of Chaos

    Hi guys, progress hasn't been as rapid as I originally planned, but it is certainly quicker than my usual. I am trying some new techniques for painting the horrors, partly to speed up the painting and partly because they are all skin rather than armour.

    Here is a where I am so far, the skin is done on the first squad of horrors, the eyes on some and on the one that I'm showing I've started doing the teeth. It still needs it's feathers and other small details doing and a tidy up.

    So here is a wip Pink Horror;

    And another angle;

    I need some advice. What colour should I do the tongue? I was thinking either bright pink (brighter than the skin) or bright blue, but I feel this might distract from the model as a whole.

    I would go with blue fading into white at the tip to hint at the blue horror fluff
    Nice job! Now get to work on those gorgeous new Screamers!

    I had thought the same-well not the fading to white, but I like the idea and will give it a go. I hope to finish the horrors either this week or this weekend and then the screamers will be next. So hopefully sometime next week I'll have pics of them with paint on.

    I too have Tzeentch Daemons to assemble and paint (new plastics included) so I'll be watching keenly for ideas!

    I started off with a black primer (GW one) as I like my models to be relatively dark. If you prefer you could use a white primer that would make the whole model a bit brighter.

    Then Base Coat Screamer Pink.
    Followed by a wash of Carroburg Crimson.
    Then a heavy dry brush of Pink Horror making sure to leave some of the layer below exposed, especially in any recesses. (Edit: I also left any areas that would be heavily shadowed such as under the arms free from Pink Horror)
    Finally I applied a small amount of Emperor's Children to any raised areas that I felt would catch the light.

    That is the skin and the teeth are so far bleached bone (although my pot is old and dry so I will need a replacement to do the others) and the eyes are so far sunburst yellow (again I will need to find a replacement in the new paint range).

    It's very simple and quick. Now I just need to get him finished (and the rest of his squad).

    Re: ChrisMurray's forces of Chaos

    Hi all, it's been a long time. I have some progress to share with you all. I have completed the first squad of Horrors and the squad of Screamers. The Horrors aren't based yet as I will leave that until the end and do all the models in one sitting. I would like to say that the new Screamer models are a joy to paint. They speed paint very well (I did mine in one day!) but also for those with greater skill and time than me they also have a lot of small details and could be made to look fantastic in the hands of a pro. Speaking of small details, the Screamers have convinced me to stop being lazy and buy some new brushes. In case no one knew every model painted in this log and my Imperial log have been painted using one brush, a GW tank brush. A detail brush would have been very handy for these models so I think I will finally have to get one.

    Right, onto what we are really here for, pictures.

    Group shot of Horrors;

    Then the individual Horrors;

    The next post will have the Screamers in it...

    Regards
    Chris Murray

    Group shot;

    Individuals;

    Right that it for now. Sorry for the quality of some of the photos, I was running late for work and just wanted to grab some pics to show progress. Next up will be the next squad of Horrors, but that won't be until next month as I am off to the USA tomorrow night for the rest of this month. When I get back though I expect to finish all the models I currently have by the end of the month (so by the end of October).
