Lord Eidolon & "The Reflection Crack'd"

Hi there,

This is a question about Lord Eidolon and what happens in the novella "The Reflection Crack'd". Pretty major spolier included.

As far as I was aware, Eidolon was a significant part of the current Emperor's Children command structure, and had taken part in several post-heresy events, including the 1st War for Armageddon. As far as I know, this is included in previous published GW fluff, but I'm not sure where.

However, barely after the beginning of the novella, he's beheaded by a wildly emotional Fulgrim.

This appears to be a fairly significant ret-con.

So, is this some purposeful "So... if Eidolon is dead... WHO's been pretending to be him all these years??", or a Lucius-like resurection, or some other 'Chaos Did It'? Or is the whole novella a 'It was all a dream...'?

Unsubstantiated rumours claim that Eidolon is responsible for hundreds, if not thousands, of gruesome raids on Imperial worlds in the past ten thousand years, and have suggested he may have served as lieutenant to Abaddon the Despoiler, consort to Queen Sylelle and champion of the Daemon Prince N'Kari. No Inquisitor has yet succeeded in locating the source of these rumours, but. without undisputable evidence, the Inquisition will not declare Eidolon dead.

I am not aware of him taking part in any post-Heresy event beyond what the above quote refers to, therefore Reflection Crack'd doesn't really effect it much.

Can't say I've seen any mentioning of him taking part in the first Armageddon invasion, and the sceptic in me wonders what he why he would have taken part of Angrons Khornate host... even with the army lists having moved away from a mono-god focus since then, from a rules-mechanic perspective.

The character was invented for the IA article, then used extensively in the Horus Heresy books, and while there is that quote of not knowing if he is still out there, it is an in-universe uncertain thing.

Or they are building up for a "comic book death" style return, you could have Fabius Bile there cloning him, or the rumoured Keeper of Secrets that he supposedly served as champion for taking an interest an resurrecting him somehow...
