Well the title says it all, I thought we could use one, the Ogre Stronghold doesn't have a new article and I have only played 2 games with the new army book so I shouldn't do it myself but I thought I could start off with a few basics.
Here are some of my basic notes so far.
Very Solid Anti-Magic
-Hell Heart (Always take in a Tourney)
-Banner of the Maw (Depending on your Meta Game)
Low Leadership
-Your Generals Leadership stalls out at 9, unless fielding a tyrant and that is a bad idea.
-7 for basic core, 8 for most of the rest with one disappointing 4.
-BSB is going to be required due to these LD scores.
Magic
Gut Magic
-Its basically a mix between Life and Beasts but with less offense and no Regrowth.
-We can run our important spells on 4 dice.
-It is reasonable to block up your units similarly to vampires since your buffs have a 12 inch range.
Fire Belly
-This guy could be pretty damn effective, I would love Fiery Sword of Rhuin on any of my ogre units, and the extra magic missiles can be a god send vs. Ethereal units which give us fits. Due to our expensive characters.
Core
-Iron Guts are extremely good due to magic banners, and being so solid this is the only unit I would go horde for in the list.
-Ogres are good but Iron Guts are much much better, since your initiative sucks so badly. I would point out that a single horde unit of Ogres can handle your core if you really like Man Eaters more than Iron Guts.
Special
-Man Eaters are interesting but expensive, I like the look of Scoot or Shoot (Swift Strider & Scout with a brace of Pistols)
-Mourn Fang Cavalry are very nice, and can take the roll of Man Eaters pretty easily, but have less wounds per point.
-Sabretusks are extremely good for their price, but their leadership will pose a problem, I prefer units of 5 but I can see arguments for fewer. (I would point out that 5 of these on average eat Teclis in a Phoenix Guard/Caradryan anvil.)
-Leadbelchers I haven't used these yet due to only having 4, and that seems asking for issues.
Rares
-Thunder Tusks are very good with great combat support, or mobile stone throwers. I really want 2 of them, for 2250 games as they will let me have a very solid center and provide combat support to any of my units.
-The Cannon Thing is very nice but I prefer the adaptability of Thunder Tusks.
-Stone Horns, I need to re-read this entry very solid and cannon resistant but that seems like they will shoot at my units.
-Giants are awful, due to cannon sniping and being over priced compared to a Thunder Tusks.
