Like everybody else says its all about what you want, like, feel inside etc etc. What do your friends/local group play? Try a contrast. I got into it with a friend and he went for dwarves so i took orcs. This was partly based on a couple of decades of role-playing and LOTR. We knew what to expect and went thusly forwards.

It all comes down to what you like, its really that simple. They all work well. I would maybe avoid the more specialist armies Lizards WOC and undead until you have a sound grounding in the rules.

Perhaps shouln't say this but most troops/unit types are basically very similar only the fluff and and couple of special rules seperate them eg not much difference between an empire swordsman and a chaos marauder stats wise

You've already got some good army recommendations but I would also add Lizardmen to that list. Game-wise they're a good army to learn with ( I learned warhammer with them) their troops are very dependable and I find the army as a whole is quite forgiving in terms of recovering from tactical errors. They participate in all phases of the game, unlike say WoC which lack shooting (Hellcannons aside), and can definitely be build in a lot of different ways. Want combat heavy, big blocks of saurus are rock solid and Scar Vets and Oldbloods are beasts!! Want shooting, tons of skinks backed up with salamanders or razordons. Magic heavy is easy with the Slann. Or you can mix these options to get a good all round army. If you want a themed army well you could have a dino heavy army with carnasaur, stegadons, terradons, cold one cav, salamnders and razordons. A Southlands all skink army is another Ive seen around.

And lets face it who doesn't love lots and lots of dinosaurs

I Have been speaking to a few people in gaming clubs etc and they have suggested to go for something like Bretonians or savage orcs for the fun element of warhammer , what does everyone think of those suggestions?

Bad idea, unless you are leaning toward those armies already. Warhammer fantasy is a large investment of time and money, don't waste either on something you won't enjoy. Play the army that you want, not the one that someone else thinks you should want.

Yeh, your first instinct is usually correct, if you prefer the look of dwarfs and beastmen go for one of those.

If you fancy a solid, dependable army of never say diers, go dwarfs. If you would prefer the more aggressive, bad guy style them go beastmen.

    Simple as that really

Edit: forgot about warriors, in this case I would probably wait a few weeks for their new book, the new stuff might swing it for you. It usually does for me, at least until its not new anymore!
