Best new 40k equivalent movie: Starship Troopers 4 - Invasion

I just watched Starship Troopers 4: Invasion, and I have to say... it's my new best 40k equivalent movie. It's all CGI and captures their universe pretty well. There are a lot of similarities in style and story that I think make it close to 40k.

Just wanted to throw that out there for anyone interested!

awesome! ive been looking forward to that movie for a while.

However, my favorite "40k equivalent" movie is called Event Horizon. I consider it a spiritual prequel, because the plot is: what happens to a ship that goes through the warp without gellar fields.

Wait, there is a 4? When did 4 come out?

The original is great for IG vs Nids, about as iconic nids as possible- hordes of small gribblies, and a few big critters to wreck things. 3rd movie had things like the hive mind/synapse critter, and a human take on tau crisis suits. Roughneck chronicles were a surprisingly good cgi series.

As for Event horizon, it is practically an adopted 40K movie. Early warp travel experiment.
Aliens is about a genestealer infestation.
Judge Dredd is about the Arbites (Looking forward to the new one)
Wing Commander is a decent movie to imagine the Imperial Navy.

Yeah, myself too. When I started playing 40k and reading the fluff, one of the first thing that came to my mind was that movie.

No, priest is a movie about how unholy abhumans need to be kept in their reservations where they can't threaten decent god fearing humans and how the church isn't tough enough on them. The western theme was not a lucky choice for that movie.

Starship troopers 4 is...erm...pretty dumb and badly written. And it lacks the camp humour that 1 and 3 tried to offer as an alternative.

Event Horizon is the best 40k movie out there. The hero even uses a bolt gun at one point, not to mention the 8 pointed star on the drive core.
    Awesome. Awesome to the head.

Agreed, pre-Age of Strife Warhammer movie which captures some of the essence of the 40k universe.

Militarywise I'd choose 'Battle for(of?) Los Angeles' (Tau vs IG), even if it is a large US Marine recruitment add.

Got to say starship troopers I remember when it came out playing a imperial guard fort being assaulted by wave upon wave of tyranids, still one of the best games I have played.

Not seen 4 yet but the battle scenes in 1 are certainly about as 40k as you could grt in a film not about 40k.

Event Horizen is a classic too.

It's a wonderful irony that those two films capture the 40k universe more successfully than the 'ultramarines' movie...

Re: Best new 40k equivalent movie: Starship Troopers 4 - Invasion

Just finished watching Starship Troopers 4 after reading your post, MALICIOUS LOGIC. It wasn't exactly a masterpiece but was suprisingly enjoyable. Also some of the best cgi that I've seen.

While there were a few things that reminded me of 40k, I wouldn't say that it fully felt like 40k as the first Starship Troopers did. The humans seemed like a mixure of Space Marines and Tau if anything whereas in the first film, I could have sworn I was watching Imperial Guard fighting against Tyranids. The armour that the characters wore actually looks almost identical to Infinity models.

I remember many moons ago playing a 'Pitch Black' inspired game where endless waves of Tyranids would assault an Imperial Guard column that had to move across a very long table (well, two tables bashed together). Night Fighting was used the whole game and it made it very intense and memorable. I'll grant the movie itself didn't have much of a 40k theme to it but it certainly provided a fun scenario idea.

Event Horizon is a classic 40k movie hands down.

Chronicles of Riddick tried to be like 40k. It had a ton of the themes and elements, but just not enough glue to put all the pieces together.

I remember SST 2 and 3 to be among the worst movies i have ever willingly treated myself to. I didnt know there is a 4th one (although i do know there were some CG movies and a series, which as far as i remember werent based on the live-action movies' canon)

    I might look into it.

Look into the CGI show its based on the book more than the movie, they use power armour and encounter more than just the arachnids, i've always liked the first ST film but the sequels were dire, still better than the space marine movie though damn that sucked ass hard.

Starship troopers 4 was dross, it had terrible acting, a rehashed plot (Really? psy-ops are conducting telepathic bug experiments and it goes wrong? NEVAR) and godawful CGI nudity just because that's a SST "thing".
1 was ok, I wasnt a massive fan. 2 I liked, mainly for the horror elements. 3 was dire, but at least gave us Marauder suits, Roughnecks had poor CGI (well, on the humans at least, bugs looked good) great stories and fleshed out the bugs a lot, which fed back into the Mongoose wargame, and the games...well, I heard ok things about the RTS, but I enjoyed the FPS. none of them had anything to do with the book though.

There are tons of movies that get wheeled out whenever anyone thinks of 40K inspiration, event horizon, SST, Priest, Mutant Chronicles (what do you mean you never watched Mutant Chronicles?)

There's a film called The Black Death with the mighty Sean Bean that is, essentially, about a Mordheim warband. Good film too.
