Thread: My Black Legion

    My Black Legion

I have a larger painting blog over in the xenos logs, but I dont like the way it's turned out. I have so many different projects in that blog that it's all over the place and I'd rather make it easier for people to find projects of mine that they want to see instead of sifting through pages. So on that note, heres the beginning of my black legion. Ignore the light, its harsh and gives the models a bad glare. I'm shooting for a clean black look while having the gold/silver looking antique.

I'm having trouble figuring out which base I want to use on my legion. So I figured I'd ask the community.

Looking good! My vote for a base would be the one to the left with the rocks!

Im not sure if I'm going to keep the power cables red or not. Not really sure which way to go with them. I might even take them out.

Here's what the models will look like with the skull base. I painted it first since it was the easiest.

    Re: My Black Legion

Decided to go with the Skull bases. Easier to paint and allows for a breakup of the black tone. Hope you all enjoy! I modified the reaper cannon because I didnt like the big blade at the end, plus I thought it looked bad and there was no good way to make it fit the paint scheme. Also removed the power cables for the axe for the same reasons. Only got the axe left to go.

your paint skills look solid. They look good. I'd say try and pick out the some more of the details which you have left black in other colours. Things like the gun barrels and and exoskeletons on the termies. Otherwise good work

    Re: My Black Legion

I would but if you highlight black to much, it turns grey. Also, I'm not a fan of picking out high detail as I feel it distracts. But I'll certainly look into it. Only the one model is finished

*edit. What do yo umean by left black in the other colors? I didnt want to put to much silver on the gun because of distraction. But I could see painting some extra parts of the exo.

    Re: My Black Legion

check out my BL plog, second link in my sig. They still look black, but I've painted everything. DragoonKing and Basetheruin also have great plogs. You can paint all the details, without sacrificing the black.

    Re: My Black Legion

I found a tutorial on how to highlight black with blue and gave it a shot. It's not perfect but it brings out the details. It'll be easier once I do this after basecoating instead of trying to get around all the details.

Beppo1234 speaks the truth and you could do worse than to check out the blogs he mentions. He did forget one though and the creators already posted on your work! Check out Abaddons children for further inspiration.

    Re: My Black Legion

Who's Abaddons children and where can I view them. Yeah, I've checked out the blogs. It's what made me go do some searching on ways to highlight black. Heres the start of a pred ive had for awhile. I dont know why, but the blue highlight never looks the same in camera but looks much better in real life. The blue isn't as drastic.

Hi Draconis, Abaddons Children is mine and the links in my sig. I went the other way and used grey to edge highlight. Purely personal choice. One of my mates (Rev) on the imperial logs uses a blue highlight to great effect however he mixes a blue into his black base coat. Helps tie the whole thing together. Whatever you're chosen method persevere, I'm sure it'll come good in the end!

PS good to see the Legions numbers growing!

Yea, def switched to grey on that model above. I was convinced to switch from a custom DG faction to black legion. Just ended up liking the fluff, the paint scheme and the ability to not be tied down to a certain choices since I'm a huge fluff player

    Re: My Black Legion

i did the blue/grey on my ravenwing. It looks good, but you have to be careful not to overdo it and lose your black. A safe suggestion for that, is after you do your blue, give it a wash of black, then continue with a sharp highlight of grey. I didn't use this method on my BL, because I use a messy wash of scorched brown, and it messes up any blue. But for your sharp highlight, I use a custom mix which is slightly darker than codex grey. Again, if you find it takes away from the blackness, you can again wash it with black to darken the the armour plates.
