Super cheap alternate models by Reaper

Hey all, wanted to get the word out that reaper is currently hosting a Kickstarter for their Bones product.

Currently you can get over 100 fantasy miniatures for under $1 a model at the Vampire level. ($100)

The models range so that you could use them in many different armies. The Bones material is an interesting soft plastic that is almost rubery, but the detail on the models rivals that of GW's finecast with no bubbles and minimal mold lines involved.

Figured I'd put this here in general chat so anyone who is interested can check it out

For Orks the Lookout sir rule may not seem likely. The thought of an Ork selflessly jumping in front of his commander to protect him from incoming fire doesn’t seem to fit their nature. However the reality of the situation cannot be further from the truth, especially when the commanding Ork grabs the boy next to him and uses him as a shield.

Could you give us some more information on the material they are made out of. I don't like the idea of working with rubber models to be honest.

They look pretty interesting, shame I'm not in the US. I especially like the fire elemental things.

They already have some models out if you want to try one. It's the same material Reaper uses for their prepainted plastics. The ones I have seen come clean by many people's standards, and the material is more rigid than models from other companies that do prepaints. They work for conversions as they can be cut cleanly. They are not as easy to clean up as GW plastics. They cut fine, but it took me a bit more work to scrape away mold lines. It's doable, but not quite as nice as GW plastics. That said, the mold lines are minimal to where I could see many people ignoring them, but I'm a bit anal about mold lines. They are somewhere between newer heroclix and GW plastics leaning much closer to the GW side and have good detail. I think they are a little bit better than the Confrontation/AT-43 plastics if you have tried either of those lines. You do get bent bits, but they can usually be straightened out with hot water.

If you have a local retailer that carries Reaper then see if they have any blisters with "Bones" in big print. I don't have any on me, but I seem to remember either the blister, or the word Bones being primarily green. All the models for the kickstarter will be using the same process and materials so that should give you an idea if it is something you want to invest in or not.

I've seen them and they are REALLY good for the cost. They are mono-pose, but for what you pay it's worth it.

How well does that kind of material take paints, though?

Wait, it's US only? Pah. (be careful, the elemental pictured isn't a mini, it's just a drawing).

US and Canada get free shipping, it's $25 elsewhere. Still a pretty spectacular deal.

It's not what the FAQ says. Ok, they allow for foreign "bids", but it doesn't sound like a fixed price at all:
We are dealing with overseas backers on a case-by-case basis for shipping charges. We cannot quote actual shipping at this time because we are expecting the no-charge add-ons to grow dramatically at this level. If you pledge the level at the $300.00, we will compute and bill for actual shipping via whatever method you desire after the close of the project.

Ive painted up a model in this material, and it took paint very well. The primer can rub off though, so it's best to never touch the model you're painting. Once the paint is on there it stays, unlike metal models. At the price, they are 100% worth it. $2.50 for an ogre hero? Yes please!

I painted some without primer (a feature of the bones) and had no problem with paint rubbing off. Maybe your primer was such that it didn't take to the material?

That is for the "Undertaker" level. That particular goal is designed for retail stores and has stuff like the racks and signs in it. Larger, bulkier and heavier than what the regular stuff contains.

Regular consumer pricing for "Vampire" level is $25 for international orders. They did add a caveat to that though in that if you are getting more than 5 of one item, there might be additional shipping charges. This was mostly because of the hard sided figure case which could potentially become very expensive to ship overseas.

Ah, thanks for clarifying it for me. I got to admit sometimes my English only goes so far, and I don't understand everything on this page. The additionnal stuff that could get you more shipping fee are stuff you add to the USD100 that gets you the 117 models, right? Coz there's some lovely models in there that would fit just right for some stuff of mine.

Re: Super cheap alternate models by Reaper

You pay one set of shipping, so for international pledgees like us its 25. For example I've pledged for Vampire level and nearly all the optional extras but I'm still just paying 25 shipping. The only exception is if you buy more than 4-5 of a specific optional extra you have to contact them to arrange special shipping. this is to stop people abusing the system by pledging the minimum they need to get certain things like figure cases and then buying ten of them and costing Reaper a heap in shipping.

There is also a thread on it in the general Fantasy and scifi section here.

I found that paint stuck to bones as well as it did to finecast or any other resin. Maybe I should have washed it. Maybe you didn't use GW paints. Oh well. I prime everything else, why not bones?

No problems. The way that the shipping is laid out, for normal pledges, you will get charged the highest shipping rate which applies to you only once.

For example, there are a couple of people I know who are not interested in the miniatures - but would like the paints and a case or two. For them they would pledge $1 plus $18 for one paint set of $36 for both. If they are overseas - they will also add $5 for the shipping fee for that level. The total pledge amount then for just the two paint sets would end up being $42. If they decided to add 2 cases to their pledge, the total would end up being $92 - they already paid the $5 shipping once...so they wouldn't have to pay it again.

If they had pledged at the $100 level, they would need to add $25 for shipping as Eldargal says above. However, they can then add pretty much whatever they want to their pledge without the need to pay additional shipping. They already paid $25 once and that is the maximum rate. So, if you decide to add on a couple dragons and get multiple packs of a few different sets of miniatures - then you still wouldn't need to add additional shipping to your pledge, just the amount needed to cover the options you want.

They have said that once we get closer to the end of the campaign, they will roll out a tool which will help with the calculations. I am guessing this is to help reduce the amount of updating that needs to be done to it (right now we have been hitting 1 goal a day for the past 2 weeks or so). Until then though, one of the backers put this together on their website:

    http://www.niagaragamers.net/index.p...dge-calculator

That one is for international orders, and should handle the postage for it. I haven't really checked to see if it works - though I haven't heard anyone saying it doesn't. Should allow you to get a general idea of what things will be until Reaper gets theirs released.

Just wanted to bump that because there's 30 hours left, and the USD100 pledge is amazing.

Indeed it is. 200+ models at this point. I'd say they *slightly* overshot their goal...

Well, if I understand how it works, they were aiming at 30k USD, and are now at about 2 millions and a half USD
If only GW could take a hint from that one...

To be fair when they started the Kickstarter they said they had the rewards planned out up to about $4 million. They knew this would take off and the $30k was just a token figure I think.
