Completely new to 40, need help with SW-list

    40K Army: Other
Hello, I'm going to keep this short and sweet.
My gaming group has just found interest in 40k (some of them got an army or two already), and now I'm looking for help to start up a beginner-friendly Space Wolves army at the lower points cost tier. Which units should I buy? Any idea of a small list?

Any help, ideas, info about SW or 40k in general gameplay- and armybuilds terms is greatly appreciated.

    Cheers, Kallstrom.

Rune Priests, Grey Hunters and Long Fangs are all very solid units and fit nicely into a low points list. For example you could run this...

Rune Priest w/ Runic Armor and Melta Bombs- 125
    10 Grey Hunters w/ 2 Plasma Guns - 160
    5 Grey Hunters w/ Flamer - 75
    6 Long Fangs w/ 5 Missile Launchers - 140

That's 500 points on the nose and will be a solid core to build your army on further, as it is fairly strong in all aspects other than numbers. You have psychic powers from the RP, your GHs can, for the most part, take down any units in assault that they can't out shoot, and your LFs are armed to take on anything from medium tanks to Space Marines to Ork hordes.

Yes, that's a solid core to start with. Can't do anything wrong with that.

Re: Completely new to 40, need help with SW-list

    Thanks.

Now when it comes to building the models I see some problems. The Long Fangs (devastators?) don't have enough Missile Launchers in their kit and the Grey Hunters don't come with Flame Throwers. So what to do?
I'm thinking of doing something like this since I love dwarfs and have some dwarf parts already:

Name:	squatss.jpg
Views:	37
Size:	65.7 KB
ID:	148229

So regular SW's but with dwarf heads and some shorter legs (by cutting away their thighs). I think I'll keep the weapons 40k unless they are melee weapons.
Any tips or tricks on how to do this with the list I have been given?

Probably the easiest thing to do for now is tweek the list itself to fit the models you have right now, what models/kits do you have right now and what are you planning on buying?

Using a rune priest, two Grey Hunter kits and a Devastator kit you could make this.

Rune Priest w/ Runic Armor- 120
    10 Grey Hunters w/ 2x Plasma Gun - 160
    5 Grey Hunters w/ Plasma Gun - 85
    4 Long Fangs w/ 2x Lascannon and a Missile Launcher - 120

    Total: 485

Those 15 points could give your Rune Priest a plasma pistol, a wolftooth necklace or you could add an extra Grey Hunter to your second squad, which ever you prefer.

Or if you wanted to mix and match with one Grey Hunters kit and one Tactical Squad you could run this.

    Rune Priest w/ Runic Armor - 120
    10 Grey Hunters w/ 2x Plasma Gun - 160
    5 Grey Hunters w/ Meltagun - 80
    5 Long Fangs w/ 2x Lascannon and 2x Missile Launcher - 140

if you bought a battleforce (n im not tellin
u too cus they dont save you that much) ypu could grt the list below
    rune priest (converted plastic mini)
8 gh with plasma gun (or trade for melta or flamer)
    in drop pod
    wolf guard with combi
10 gh on foot with two plasma guns
5wolf scouts with plasma gun n two pistols

ive seen 500pt lists with terminators so plebty of ap2 there and your gh in pod are vposted by the rune priests spells depending on what you take...the scputs can turn up bwgind the enemy n kill stuff...its a fairly decent list to start but id deffo use long fangs somehow mate
    ok so looking for
    Leman russes
    Chimeras
    Valkyries

At 500 points I don't think Wolf Guard are worth it, once you start running four or more squads of Grey Hunters they are great in my opinion. I'm not sold on scouts at all, I'd much rather just drop a pod of Grey Hunters down on something.

A good point about battleforce boxes though, I wouldn't buy one unless you can actually use every unit in the box or intended on selling any units you don't plan to use out of it, even then, what you save probably won't be worth the extra time spent.

Something else you might want to consider is allies. Space Wolves pair great with Imperial Guard and can pull some nice things from Codex Marines or Blood Angels also.

Been away so could not comment before now. Thanks again for the replies. I'm going to buy a box of Space Wolves to create 10x Grey Hunters with those Plasma Guns. I do however wonder about the rest of the squad, what are the rest of the 8 guys going to arm themselves with? Does it matter?
(I'm completely new so stay with me here. )

Ah okay, thanks. I bought a box of regular Space Wolves and their codex. Will look it over and build them when I have the time.

If I want to make some sort of conversion, how important is it that they have the weapons they come with? For example giving someone an axe instead of a sword etc.

Erm well unless its a power weapon it doesnt matter...as tgey now have different rules. As far as ccw go...an axe is treated no differently to a sword

Yes the axe is slower in combat. Sword is faster. I think that swords are the best power weapons. And grey hunters should use boltguns. Chainswords and pistols are for blood claw units.

Axe is a bit stronger but you strike last If I remember it right. And with a sword you strike normally but with some extra power. Normal CCW just add an attack.

Re: Completely new to 40, need help with SW-list

First off, congratulations on your good taste. Welcome to the coolest army in the galaxy.#

I would - at some point - advert your attention to this thread http://www.warseer.com/forums/showth...dition-Tactics - there's a lot of good advice there.

Right now you've got the basics though. Grey Hunters and Long Fangs are both very solid, and you can easily build 1k points of them alone - nevermind 500.

On the subject of how to model them - Grey Hunters should always have a boltgun somewhere, but other than that, it's fairly free-form to an extent.

Axe, Sword - it makes no difference for close combat weapons. If you're going to take a power weapon, it makes a difference as said. I like power axes personally. But you'll find your own balance - play a few games, see what works.

Finally - if you're looking for specialist/heavy weapons that aren't in the box you've got, either

    a) Look at other space marine kits and consider combining them
    b) Look at ebay.
