Thread: Artscale Nightlords. I blame Apologist...

  1. #1

Truescale Nightlords +AVE DOMINUS NOX+ (UPDATED 8/28/12 2 MORE MARINES!

With his pre heresy Ultramarines, I felt I had to do something like it! So new edition = new army. So I give you the first of my Night Lords

This was my first try at artscale/truescale/whatever you want to call it. I've used greenstuff for years, but I haven't used it in such a mass quantity. So there was sort of a learning curve.
Everything will be cleaned up before they get painted.

Here is the second I did. I was going for more of just a standard marine. Not really happy with the pose as he's a little too "standard, but I suppose he will make the more dynamic ones look even MORE...dynamic.

This shoulderpad has since been changed out for a MKIII

Here is my third attempt. I was never a fan of all the belt fed ammo used in the chaos sprue. Mainly because it would take too long to reload in battle, however, I think this guy has solved that little problem.

Re: Artscale Nightlords. I blame Apologist...

Next is the Heavy Bolter Marine with extra Optics. (Nod to apologist on choice of helmet...)

Next up the standard marine. I'm going to order a few muzzle flashes, and this guy is getting one.

Last up is the sergeant. I wanted him in kind of a "leading a patrol" pose. Hence the walking legs, with the hand signals. Hopefully I've captured that. There is really no way to tell until I put him on a base. What do you guys think about the skull on his shoulderpad? I think it provides too much motion, but I don't know what to do with it. You think I can get away with it being as is?

Note: Currently all of these marines are waiting for their Legion shoulder pad. I was having a hard time sculpting something that I was happy with, and replicating it quickly. So I've decided to buy these.....

I'm going for more of a generic evil marines feel. I don't want to get too wrapped up in all the "CHAOSNESS" of it all. After all I imagine they plunder loyalists as much as other CSM. If you have noticed, I've tried to give them a really "ramshackle" feel to give the impression that none of them have a completely original set of armor anymore. I'm doing this by modeling different MK armor types and helmets.

Many thanks for the fine compliments. That's what I'm going for. These guys have been fighting what is essentially a losing war. So I wanted to show that in their design. Up next I have two more models. I think they are still waiting on battle damage. But here they are. This first one, I will use as an Icon bearer, should the new codex warrant it.

This guy is in a "come and get it!" pose.

    What do you guys think?

These are looking rather nice dude, as Space monkey says you have a really gritty feel going on with them and a good selection of poses too

Only think I would suggest is running a needle file over the leg armour just to smooth it out.

Other than that Great work, looking forward to seeing more of them

Re: Artscale Nightlords. I blame Apologist...

Maelstrom: Thanks for the compliment. I do plan to clean them up a bit before they are painted, fret not

Here is the last two in the squad. With the leaked pics of what the new chaos marines look like, I hope my modeling skills can compete. I do very much like they're new baroque look. So I'm going to try to instill that into my models in the future. Anyway here they are...

Kinda want this guy to be running with his arms crossed unloading on either side...

And here is a group shot of all of them (-1, I'm modifying one of the currently)

Re: Artscale Nightlords. I blame Apologist...

Ok, so here is the new head I made. I liked the horned helm, but I figured my squad needed at least one guy with a bathelm. That being said, I thought this was a good way to make one that looked unique.

Here is a scale shot of one of my poor poor, guardsman running from danger. (btw, he IS screaming, KOBRA RETREAT!)

    and side by side...

Re: Artscale Nightlords. I blame Apologist...

So I've started a new project, one even more ambitious. I'm going to be making a Terminator Lord for my army. I don't know what kind of wargear I will want, but if I pull it off, he will probably be a stand in for Abbadon, so it shouldn't really be an issue.

As you know, turning Terminator legs into marine legs isn't that hard. But turning Terminator legs into even bigger Terminator legs, that's a different challenge all together. As you can see in part of it. I've cut the legs up in strategic places and glued in plasticard spacers. This knocks the proportions way out of wack, but I'm not concerned. As you can see from the top of the legs, I plan on bulking out the armor much more than what is currently there. This guy is going to be MASSIVE! And hopefully awesome looking. I think my GS skills are up to the challenge. And this new procreate (grey stuff) I'm using, is a lot easier to work with. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Artscale Nightlords. I blame Apologist...

Horacus: Yeah, This guy is turning out to be pretty big. He's about a head taller than my terminator based marines so, I'd say the size is right.

Well I must say, this guy is coming along better than I had expected. Here is what I have so far. I'm going for a very sleek, yet baroque look for him. As the leader of my warband and captain of a (yet decided) company. I wanted his armor to look like it had been modified only slightly. This guy is supposed to be a stand in for Abbadon, so he better look impressive Comments would be much appreciated.

It doesn't show up well in these crummy pictures, but that's a set of batwings. When he's finished, I'll take proper pictures so you can see it better.

I haven't decided what kind of details to put on the breastplate. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Here is his powerclaw. I like the look of the HH artwork that has the claws look like talons. And being a NL character, that fits anyway. I'll get a better shot of it up, when its done.

Some very nice conversion work here.

A few tips/pointers, mix your greenstuff into a solid green colour, if it's still yellowish tinge, it's not going to be a good as finish or to work with. Also use a lot of water or similar fluid to help smooth out the putty more, use fingers or tools of various kinds, and watch out for the dreaded fingerprints.

Otherwise keep it up, these guys look great.

Re: Artscale Nightlords. I blame Apologist...

Now that will be an intimidating squad to face when its all painted up. With the bat wings on helmets it might be worth gettign soem of the heads from the VC grave guard sprue and cuttign the wings from those, will save you some time

Your a brave man attempting a TS termie, he's looking rather good so far the sculpted bat wings and the talon in particular look good. You planning a full unit of termies or just a character or 2?

Re: Artscale Nightlords. I blame Apologist...

Earthbeard: Good point about the greenstuff. I purposely mixed it that way at first, because I thought it would give a smoother finish, since it was softer...turns out I should have gone the other way lol

Maelstrom: Right now, I'm just doing the one character. But depending on the new 'dex, I could see doing up a unit. It would take considerably less time to make, as they all don't have to be as detailed as this guy. And as far as the difficulty goes, thus far its been pretty easy. Its just a matter of laying the same size shapes on top of the shapes that are already on the model.

Re: Artscale Nightlords. I blame Apologist...

Ok Gents. Here is is. i still have to do some details on the back, and do the final shoulderpads. But for the most part, I'd say hes about 85% done. I think I'm going to give him a cloak of flayed skin...or something like that. Well, what do you guys think of the overall concept?

I'm BATMAN! Well that's what I wanted you to think with this helm

I don't know if you can read it with the crappy lighting, but the powerclaw says "VIII"

At this point, I'm kind of at a loss on what to do with the sword. It doesn't look "chaosy" enough. But I don't want to make it look like a demon weapon.

Re: Artscale Nightlords. I blame Apologist...

    Thanks again horacus!

Sorry for the crappy pics, I'll post up better ones later.

So I've finished his left shoulderpad. I like the look of the bent metal...it looks like armor that's been smithed to look like batwings.

As a replacement for abbadon, he needed some kind of gun, so I came up with this belt fed combiplasma. I still have a little work to do on the feederbelt

    I want you!

I've got a little work left to do on the sword hilt. I'm going to be adding horns as a crossbar, as well as horns and wings to the skull shoulderpad.

As always questions, comments, or concerned are always welcome. I'd like to hear what you guys think of this guy, thus far. I've only got a few little details to add/clean up, and this guy is ready for paint. I'll add in a scale shot soon as well...he's pretty huge!

Now he is awesome mate, you've got the right balance on the armour of ornate but not overkill. I like the little wrist mounted combi bolter too

I want to see the scale shot now too, a guardman is going to look tiny compared to him :P

Re: Artscale Nightlords. I blame Apologist...

You know its funny. I compared the two. A guardsman goes up to about his waist...scale shot when he is complete...which is VERY VERY close...

Re: Artscale Nightlords. I blame Apologist...

Ok, so a lot of work, and Procreate, but finally he is done! I GIVE YOU...KADOR VAKARION Chaos Lord of The VIIIth!

Here are some scale shots...he's pretty big!

Well, what do you guys think? If you see anything that needs fixing, let me know...as I don't plan on doing any more work before painting. So if you see something let me know so I can fix it.
