    Harry Harrison - RIP

The American Sci-Fi author Harry Harrison died yesterday aged 87.

He will probably be best remembered for The Stainless Steel Rat, Bill the Galactic Hero and Soylent Green; but wrote around 50 novels and many short stories in his 50 year writing career.

I know he was a sci-fi inspiration to many of my friends and his writing will be missed.

Back in the mid-late 80s, I was introduced to his "Bill, the galactic hero" series by a mate.
He used to tell me "Can't have two 'l's in your name, bub - you aren't an officer." - so I had to read it in order to understand the reference.

So, after reading it and realising that it was a colossal pisstake of Asimov's Foundation, as well as several "future war" stories, I was hooked.

I hope the deathworld is pleasant where he's going.

RIP Harry Harrison. I read the Stainless Steel Rat when I was quite young, it was rather unlike anything else at that time.

Harry Harrison will be missed. He was a great author of both SF and alternative histories.

As others have said he is best known for the Stainless Steel Rat novels, Bill the Galactic Hero, the Death World series and of course Soylent Green which was adapted from his book Make Room, Make Room.

He introduced comedy to SF years before Douglas Adams did, and his books are far superior.

I never met Harry Harrison in person, but I do have a couple of books signed by him.

You know you're getting old when your favourite authors start to slip away. Big talent, RIP Harry.
