Charging a warmachine, aligning and overrunning

I’m a little confused how to resolve a charge on a warmachine.

It looks like I ignore any base it may be mounted on and just have to make contact with the machine. Then it looks like I don’t ‘close the door’ and instead just stop where I am, select my assault party and (hopefully!) destroy the warmachine and overrun.

    BUT

Do I move my unit directly forward, make contact with the warmachine and stay facing that direction? (option 1)

Or can I wheel up to 90 degrees like normal, complete the charge by contacting the warmachine, and stay facing that direction?(option 2)

The second option will allow players to set-up nice overruns

What are your thoughts? Have I missed something?

    Thanks!

You haven't missed anything and there's nothing in the war machine rules that would prevent you completing the charge in that way.

It's a rule I hate, but it's there. I really don't understand what they don't have set bases for all warmachines and base frontage off that.

As it stands you hit them at any angle you want and then overrun into anything you want.

Players do put them on bases now to basically cheat a little. The new LoS rules allow them to place them up on "cool looking" rocks and such and it raises their LoS. BUT that doesn't effect how they line up in the rules for charges.

I put my skull-a-pult on a chariot base because its metal and crap and I didn't have the equipment to pin it when I first got it. What I do is make the catapult close the door rather than the unit that charged close the door.

If you're gonna base 'em, use a large round (60mm) or oval (120x95mm) base from 40k, or something like that. Curved edges and all that.
