Wardsylvania Creates a Counts As Grey Knights Army

Welcome to my first project log!

Over the past 17 years enjoying the 40k hobby I’ve never succeeded in assembling and fully painting even a small game legal army. I keep moving from one idea to the next leaving a long trail of barely started projects in my wake.

After many years of taking inspiration from the amazing hobbyists here on Warseer I thought I’d try to give back with some hobby ideas of my own. Perhaps in return you’ll give me that extra motivation to finally see an army through to completion.

First up, the obligatory work space photo

The idea for this army started when I saw Forge World’s amazing Tartaros Terminators. I just knew I had to build an army around them. The 6th Edition rules book inspired a “plot hook”, if you will, for an all psyker army (more on this later). Now if only Games Workshop would release an army list of psykers in terminator armor…

A test model was stuck together with Blutack to try out some conversion ideas

I decided swapping the Tartaros shoulder plates for standard terminator plates improved the look

    Now to add some equipment…

That looks cool, but space marines are supposed to be able to fight non-stop for days if necessary. He’s gonna need more gear!

    What do you think?

Next up: a Draigo conversion to lead the army.

That is really crazy with equipment.

The real reason they can fight for that long is that they spare bullets and very often there comes resupplies. Don't use much equipment at the terminators. Rather have a servitor or something carry the stuff. Because they cant change clip with those armors that easy.

But I love the FW terminators.

I agree with Fizzy, maybe that's too many pockets and stuff But otherwise nice conversion and I look foward to the rest of the army

having just gotten out of the army i understand the carry loads of gear image. it adds abit of realism that all these marines with a single magazine pouch just dont seem to convey when they are meant to be firing off as many rounds as they do. so go nuts on pouches, its looks good!

Fizzy, you bring up a good point. It would be nearly impossible for him to reload that storm bolter with the clip on the outside of the arm. It's something that crossed my mind, but I'm still debating what to do about it, or if maybe I should leave it and accept that additional bit of implausibility.

Stay tuned. I think once they've got a camo paint scheme applied along with the extra equipment it'll give the models a strong practical military aesthetic.

Clandestine, you understand exactly the look I'm going for. I spent many years supporting the military across the Middle East and know firsthand how much equipment and supplies it takes to sustain a soldier on the battlefield for even a short period of time. I've always thought space marines look silly running around in yellow armor with their helmets off and not a shred of gear. I want marines that look like they came prepared for war!

Re: Wardsylvania Creates a Counts As Grey Knights Army

The first model for the army is a Kaldor Draigo conversion. Comprised of 43 components it took forever to convert and assemble. The model was posed to convey the idea that he’s winding up for a powerful swing with his nemesis force weapon (NFW). I thought the terminator NFW looked too big so I used a NFW from the Grey Knights (power armor) box. With the NFW in place there wasn’t room to attach a gauntlet mounted storm bolter. Being the leader of the army I figured he would have access to some cool tech so I built a custom weapon from a plasma pistol and other bits. The shield is from the Forge World Tartaros terminator accessory set.

He is really cool: Loving the conversions: maybe a touch busy.... But I prefer clean lines to lots of detail - Can't wait for the paint!

Great idea and those FW-Terminators are a treat...but with SO much Equipment they just look like the Michelin-man gone berserk.

I'm afraid I have to come down on the side of 'too many pocketses'. Given the terminator armour and the size of his gloves I really can't see him reaching into a pouch any time soon. Unless he's in some 'wacky' comedy movie.

Especially given he's the boss- doesn't he have staff for that sort of thing? The idea of a laden down servitor seems rather appealing- or something like the ammo monkeys in the third Matrix perhaps.

I guess it's just my view on marines but I see them more as crusading knights than laden down squadies. Having worn more than enough of both gear I know how much you tend to lug around as a regular soldier but marines ain't regular! As a knight you dont need much more than your weapons, a drink and the odd holy relic! Besides aside from ammunition and the odd grenade what does a marine (especially a terminator) need to carry? Surely it's all built into his suit? All medicines and nutrients are injected and any maps and paperwork are projected into his helmet.

Sorry for the rant! On the other hand I love the armoured look and the pose is great. I just think its a bit of a shame it's hidden beneath his shopping bags! :-)

I like the equipment thing you got going on, however I think the best thing to do now would be a modern army sort of look.

They got a sort of paratrooper thing going on with them.

Yep, I reckon if you were going to go down the whole "grey knight" theme the colour and pouches just wouldnt match. So maybe a Normal Cadian colour scheme? Olive drab and khaki maybe? But yes I defientley agree with you when you say "Marines" are meant to look like they are going into combat with pouches and not 1 magazine lol. Keep up the great work buddy

Wow, opinions seem sharply divided on this project. I appreciate everyone's candid feedback!

You're the second person to mention some kind of pack servitor, which got me thinking about DARPA's Big Dog project. Something like that would make a really fun conversion and fit well with the army. I'm not sure what they could represent from the Grey Knights army list though. Objective markers perhaps?

Completely agree. I haven't settled on a color scheme yet, but have been testing out some different camo patterns using lots of browns.

I was going to say what this reminded me of in my last post but I forgot what the artist's name was so I didn't say it, but now I have to say this reminds me a lot about St Theo's artwork
