    Lizardmen Training Battles!

    Hello my fellow warseerites!

This thread will just be me testing out my new Lizardmen which I'm painting up for a fluff-campaign that I'm organizing for myself and three friends. The campaign will go from 500 to 1500pts so the training battles will be conducted at that range. Since this thread will be played with unpainted models I won't post any fluff in it, instead, once we all have 500pts painted the campaign will start and this thread will probably become less active. My lists are not optimized, but these are the models I have so that's what I have to use, and use them i shall!

The paint log can be found here at Lizardmen: 1500pts

Anyway, the first battle for the thread will be a 1500pts battle against Daemons of Chaos.

    Pre-Game Comments
Well, when he put his army up I pretty much figured I was toast, gotta be honest here. I felt like I didn't have any proper counter for his two main blocks. It felt like my only option was to avoid battle for as long as possible while picking him off with blowpipes. But with his wardsave, many fast units and magic it felt like my skinks would be done in quickly. My plan was to hold my combat units back, harass his flanks and shut down his magic missiles, and if opportunity presented itself gang up on one unit and take it down quickly. But, I felt intimidated, I've rarely beaten this opponent and I don't think I've ever beaten his daemons.

    Magic
I rolled 'Harmonic Convergance' and 'Wind Blast'. I exchanged 'Wind Blast' for 'Iceshard Blizzard'.
    He had loremaster in light.

On my side there was a forest on each side and a swamp in the centre, on his side there was two buildings, a wall, some high grass which gave soft cover and two forests. To the left in the middle there was some mausoleums which just counted as impassable.

I deployed from my left to right: Skinks with my general and bsb, templeguard, ancient stegadon and on the far right skinks. My last unit of skinks, my cold ones and my saurus started in reserve.

My opponent deployed from my left to right: Bloodletters and behind them both furies units and behind them the screamers. His other bloodletters, pink horrors with general and fiends began in reserve.

My opponent start off by moving up his bloodletters, screamers and one unit of furies towards my stegadon and temple guards. His other unit of furies move up as intimidation against my skinks. His reminging units all come in on my left and move up. Magic is uneventful.

I shuffle my entire line towads my right to stay away from his new units, I prepare to use my temple guards as my flank protectors while moving my stegadon into the center and keeping my bunker back. My new units come in behind the swamp and right forest, staying away from his main lines, using the terrain for protection. I manage to cast 'Iceshard Blizzard' on his right furies, I do one wound with the lore attribute but he saves it. I then cause around six wounds with shooting on both furies units but he saves them all, great...

He pretty much just moves everything up straightforwardly, keeping my units boxed in for his main blocks to deal with. His magic manage to kill three skinks and he casts 'Net of Amyntok' on my cold ones.

I keep moving to the right with my units so that my bunker is now in the center, my temple guards secure their flank position, my stegadon charge and destroy his furies. My right skinks move in close to his bloodletter and actually manage to kill a few of them!

His screamers charge my stegadon but fail to do any damage. I kill two screamers and put a wound on the last one. His furies fly up to block my skinks. His fiends charge my temple guards and kill five of them, I put two wounds on one of them in return. I loose but pass my break test. Meanwhile the rest of his army marches forward, his magic kills one more skink and puts bironas timewarp on his bloodletters.

    Turn 3 – Lizardmen

My stegadon finish off his screamers and reform to force his bloodletters to move away from the main army if he charges it, or leave a flank open if he advances. His fiends kill two more temple guards and I take the last wound of the wounded fiend which means I win combat thanks to musician and thereby I put one more wound on his fiends. My bunker keeps moving in behind the main line and my remaining skink unit moves up to redirect his bloodletters. My skinks unload a lot of shots on the furies and land like four wounds but he saves them all. Those furies seem indestructible!

His bloodletters reform in the center to go for ranks instead of horde, his furies charge my skinks but he fluffs his attacks and only manage to kill one skink, in return my skinks go on a killing spree, taking down three furies and popping the last one! His fiends finally kill my temple guards and reform towards my stegadon. The rest of his units are being held back, blocked by the center bloodletters.

I move everything that can shoot up within range of his bloodletters and drop 7 of them. I move my cold ones and saurus up to be ready to charge and cover my flank against the fiends.

Turn 5 – Daemons of Chaos
He charge his bloodletters into my stegadon but only manage to kill two crew members, I drop a few of his in return. He wins but I hold on my stubborn roll. He moves his fiends up to be in charge range for the last turn.

I countercharge with everything and get my skinks into the flank and my cold ones in the front. My saurus fail their charge. I kill a few of his, he drops two cold ones and two skinks and one crew, I think this round was a tie.

He charges in with his fiends, he kills the last of my crew and puts a wound or two on my stegadon I pass my reaction test. He kills one more cold one and a couple more skinks. I kill a bunch of his. He wins combat by one but all my units hold.

I charge in with my saurus in the flank of his fiends. My attacks wipe out his bloodletters and combat res almost pops his fiends, one remain with two wounds.

    Result
    Crushing Victory for Lizardmen!

    Post-Game Comments
Wow, things went a whole lot better then I expected! With the risk of sounding like I'm banging my own drum I feel I played a pretty solid game. For once I managed to stay focused on my battle plan to stay out of combat using evasive tactics and then finally gang up on one of his blocks after picking off his softer units! There are two main things though that contributed to this victory, first off my opponent made a mistake bringing in his bloodletters on the left flank instead of on the right flank where they never saw combat. But, in his defence he had to act without knowing where my combat blocks would enter and I managed to capitalize on this. The second was that my temple guards managed to hold off his fiends against the odds so that I could isolate and soften up his bloodletters. And of couse my skinks got really lucky in killing his furies!

Well, I'm very pleased with this game, it felt like I got my head back into a more tactical setting rather than how I've played as of late with just pushing them around with little thought. Felt nice!

Also, sorry for the pretty shoddy write up of this, I know it's kinda sub-par. But since this was only a a training game i didn't take any notes, just some pictures and I'm pretty much just interested in outlying the major events rather than building a deep story. Once the campaign starts however there will be plenty off that going around, and my grammar and general language usage will be much better then as well! There is a small piece of fluff in the painting log to show what to expect!

Hope you'll stay tuned and rooting for the cold-blooded reptiles!

Best regards all and happy wargaming!

I kinda remembered this part of Warseer as being more active last I was roaming these forums.

Anyway, I've gone through and fixed it up a bit, added the daemon list proper and fixed some spelling/grammar errors and tried to make the layout a bit easier on the eyes.

Yeah, it has really died down here in the battle report section. Blame youtube

I hope you keep enjoying lizardmen, they can be a lot of fun. It's easy to get trapped into the standard lists once you see the power of a slann, but even then just make sure to keep your list varried and you'll have a blast with it

Aye, burn youtube! Nah, love youtube reps so I'm guilty as well for that one. But things sure are quiet in these parts.

I love playing lizardmen, their gaming style (on the list I run) are very fun and challenging (I think at least ) and their play style are quite different from my previous armies.

    Re: Lizardmen Training Battles!

I remember the good ol days were I would post a written report and have 800+ views by the end of the day. Now if I do it I'm lucky to get 100.

Your style here is the way to go though, with pictures in the post. If you keep it up, and keep the lists interesting, people will keep coming back

Thanks on both accounts Kayosiv! I'm looking forward to it!

I have at least one training battle today, perhaps two if time allows, with some luck I might be able to get one in tomorrow as well. Today I also have a fluff battle planned for my old Arghuz campaign.

    Re: Lizardmen Training Battles!

Sorry ter hijack this thread, but yeah, I pretty much blame youtube for this debacle.

To be fully honest, as long as I can remember Malorian pretty much WAS the Battle Reports section. Then I went away for a while, and when I came back it seemed he was less active than before... maybe my imagination, but I sure see few threads with the Malorian label lately, which is a mark of quality.

As for youtube... well, sorry, but I just don't like it. This discussion is old, but I'm still gonna state what puts me off:

    1. I don't want to wait forever for it to load
    2. I don't usually have 20 minutes of time to wait through it and see if it's actually gonna be interesting
    3. It is difficult to jump back and forth and compare different situations
    4. My computer is rather crappy, not exactly making this a feast for the eyes (and ears)
    5. As a stupid foreigner it can be rather difficult for me to understand, far more so than a written report

These are the reasons why I shun youtube and also why I don't check this section regularly anymore. The only reason I clicked this thread is because it said Lizardmen in the btitle. I gave youtube a try a few times in the past but it simply isn't my cup of tea. Therefore I'm very happy to see a more traditional Battle Report with nice pics again. Very enjoyable indeed!

    Re: Lizardmen Training Battles!

Here comes the next report, another 1500pts against the same daemon player. I brought the same list, but he mixed it up quite a bit for this one. Unfortunately I did miss to take a few turn pictures, I blame the fact that this one was my second game for the day (my first was the fluff-battle for my Orcs & Goblins which will be up later) and I was therefore a little bit tired. Hope you'll enjoy it! If you do please feel free to subscribe and rate.

    Pre-Game Comments
Well, when he put his force down I actually felt pretty confident, the more I play daemons the more I learn about them. Sure, three heralds at 1500pts was intimidating and it would still be two tough combat blocks to pull down. My plan was the same as last time, hang back with my combat blocks and soften him up with my skirmishers first and then try to pick my battles. Then we rolled scenario and it became battle for the pass and my thought was... ******! Now I would be boxed in with very limited ability to run around his flanks, and I knew this would be an uphill battle!

    Magic
I rolled 2x 'Curse of the Midnight Wind'. I exchanged one of them for 'Chain Lightning' and the other one for 'Iceshard Blizzard'.
    He had loremaster in shadow.

I deployed from my left to right: Up in the front I deployed as a screen; skinks, skinks with my general and bsb and then the last skinks in the back I deployed the ancient stegadon, cold ones, temple guards and saurus.

My opponent deployed from my left to right: Fiends with a screen of furies, bloodletters with their herald, horrors with the general and then daemonettes with their herald and a screen of furies.

I move up my right skinks and move in my generals units to focus on his right furies, then I bring my left skinks into the center to shoot his other furies. In magic I stat off by casting 'Iceshard Blizzard' on the furie, my opponent let it go and the lore attribute kills two furies. I then cast 'Chain Lightning' on his center furies but only kill on, he removes the rightmost one so the lightning can't jump. That was smart and I should have foreseen that and focused on another unit insted. Oh well, lesson learned. My skinks completely whiff their shots and only do one wound in total which is saved. My rear battle line begins to move up towards the right.

Turn 2 – Daemons of Chaos
First his center furies charge my generals unit, I figure his right furies will charge as well and decide I'd rather flee from them so i take a stand and shoot and kill two of them with 12 shots needing 9s to hit! Then when his right furies charge I feel pretty confident I can take them and choose to hold. The rest of his line just moves up. He has a poor magic round and fails to get anything through. in combat my bsb kills two off the furies on the right unit, he kills two skinks in return and the combat is a draw.

I move up my stegadon behind my left skinks to make sure they can get away from his fiends, the right skinks move in two stand beside the general to get a better flight path in case the daemonettes charge them. In combat I cast 'Iceshard Blizzard' on the two remaining furies from the center unit and they both die from the lore attribute. I then cast 'Chain Lightning' and IF it, it jumps through three units and manage to kill a whopping one bloodletter and one pink horror. I subsequently loose one magic level. Not quite worth it! My bsb proceeds with killing the last fury.

His fiends charge my skinks who flee through my lines to safety, his daemonettes charge my generals nit and now I learn he has the siren standard, crap! This is not good. He buffs them with mindrazor just for kicks and evaporates my entire unit without breaking a sweat. My right skinks luckily pass their panic. Yeah, now I'm in a pretty poor position, my magic is completely gone, I have no re-rolls left, I'm boxed in and I have nothing that can even remotely match a mindrazored ASF daemonettes unit that I can't even run from. I even tell my opponent that I don't think I can match his army, but hell will freeze over before if I quit! I've never broken off a game early and I'm not about to start now! Who knows, miracles might still happen!

I charge my stegadon into his fiends, hoping to get rid off them and overrun to relative safety. I rally with my rear skinks and I pass my test to march with right and move them up to shoot at his horrors. The forest turns out to be a regular forest. The rest of my battle lines angle up to meet his oncoming horde. In shooting I manage to drop one pink horror. In combat my impact hits kill one fiend, he then put three wounds on my stegadon! I manage one more wound with my attacks and I pop one more fiend with combat res... this is not going as planned!

Turn 4 – Daemons of Chaos
His bloodletters charge the flank of my stegadon and his daemonettes charge my temple guard, he needs a nine I think to reach and he makes it, doh! He buffs his daemonettes with mindrazor again and vaporizes my temple guards before they get to strike... yeah... My saurus pass panic. In the other combat my steagadon is reduced to one wound. I proceed to kill his herald (YAY!) and stomp two of the bloodletters but he saves one of them. I fail my stubborn roll and flee, he restrains with his bloodletters and reform towards my cold ones. His fiends pursue but roll lousy and i get away! Sweet! We forget to roll for the forest and forgets to do so for the rest of the game.

I charge my skinks into his pink horros in an attempt to assassinate his general. My saurus swift reforms and move out of line of sight from his daemonettes. My cold ones charge his bloodletters for the same reason. My rear skinsk move up to shoot at his fiends and my stegadn rally and turn to face his fiends. My shooting puts two wounds on his fiends. In combat the bloodletter manage to get three killing blows (DOH!) and six more wounds but I manage to save five 4+ saves (YAY!) I manage to kill a heap back and actually win and pop a few off them. In combat against his horrors I fail my fear test. I have four attacks against his general, I get 1, 2, 5 and six. I roll to wound and get 5 and 6. He rolls for saves... and roll 1, 2 and down the herald goes! I was literally.. yes I really mean literally jumping up and down in joy! The rest of my skinks kill one of his pink horrors and i loose two skinks in return. He rolls horrible for his stability test and pops all but two horrors!

He charge his fiends into my stegadon and turn his daemonettes to face my saurus. In combat between my skinks and his horrors we each manage one kill and tie. In combat against his furies he fail to get the last wound! and I take the last wound of his wounded fiend and we tie. His bloodletter wipe out my last cold ones before I get to strike and then reform to face my stegadon.

    Turn 5 – Lizardmen
I charge my rear skinks into the flank of his fiend, my plan is to get rid of it and reform to face his bloodletters to save my stegadon. My saurus can no longer get out of line of sight of his daemonettes so I just reform to face them. In combat my skinks drop the last pink horror and reform towards the others. My skinks and stegadon fail to wound the fiends at all and he drops three fiends so he wins combat but both my units hold.

His bloodletters charge the flank of my skinks. He decides it's not worth charging his daemonettes into my saurus without buffs. In combat he tries to kill my stegadon with his fiend but fail to wound it. I manage to kill his fiend this turn. His bloodletters drops three of my skinks. Now we're a bit uncertain about the rules regarding if the stegadon takes a break test or if he is no longer in combat. We're to tired to look it up and decide he is out of the combat. I've looked it up now and we played it right. He wins and I pass my stubborn test.

    Turn 6 – Lizardmen
I also decide that a battle between the daemonettes and saurus isn't worth the risk so I do nothing (it is worth stating that at this moment I still think that you need double VPs for a win, turns out the errata changed that back to 100 VPs, had I known I would probably have risked it and hoped for the best). In combat he wins against my skinks and this time they break and are run down.

    Result
    Victory for Daemons of Chaos.

    Post-Game Comments
That was a really fun game! It went better then I expected after rolling for sceanario... and especially after what happened to my general and bsb so early in the game. My skinks managing to kill his general and of course my stegadon managing to kill his herald of khorne gained me quite some points. Heralds are tough, but they are the key to bringing down Daemons, you really need to focus on them. Unfortunately I never even got the chance to swing at his last herald since the daemonette unit just ate anything that touched it. Even though it was a loss I'm still pretty satisfied with the game under the circumstances. Next time I'll be wary about that siren standard. That item is really nasty.

Hope you'll stay tuned and rooting for the cold-blooded reptiles! If you like it feel free to post c&c, subscribe, rate and all that fancy stuff!

Best regards to you all and happy wargaming!

Lol why in the world did he attack the riders here? Did he think to try and just get combat resolution, not realizing the unit is stubborn? Or His Letters have a better chance to kill the stegadon than most troop would. He should have just went for that.

Well, making me take a stubborn 6 roll is still better then him having to take a instability test himself. Stubborn 6 is far from a granted success.

    Pre-Game Comments
Going in to this battle I knew it was going to be quite a challenge, he has more troops, faster troops and tougher troops then me but even so I was really looking forward to this game. I do love a challenge! When we rolled for scenario and it became battle for the pass again I wondered if I was evil in my past (or current) life.

Anyway, in I went. My plan was to try and get my skinks out behind his lines if I could and hopefully isolate his knights blocks and take them down one at the time with my combat units.

    Magic
I rolled 'Harmonic Convergance' and 'Wind Blast'. I exchanged 'Wind Blast' for 'Iceshard Blizzard'.
He rolled 'Transformation of Kadon' and 'The Savage Beast of Horrors', he exchanged 'Transformation of Kadon' for 'Wyssans Wildform'

On my side there was a village with one large house and two smaller houses, two smaller towers and one large tower. A wall towards him and a fence running down the middle. In the Right corner was a haunted 'mansion' or rather some kind of haunted structure. On his side was three forest, one normal (the one with the huts) and two mysterious. There was also a normal hill on his side.

I deployed from my left to right: Skinks, templeguard, saurus warriors, skinks with general bsb, cold ones, ancient stegadon and skinks.

My opponent deployed from my left to right: Men-at-arms with general, damsel, peasant archers, knights of the realm, knights of the realm.

He prayed so I got to choose who would go first and I chose for him to start to be able to respond to his actions. He moved everything towards my left side. In magic I dispelled his 'Wyssans Wildform' and he chose not to cast 'The Savage Beast of Horrors'. His shooting killed one skink from my leftmost unit.

I move my right flank up to threaten his flank as he advances, and if possible to get around behind him. On my left I reform and back away with my saurus while I move my skinks up to shoot at his knights. In magic he shuts down 'Iceshard Blizzard' and then I get off a boosted 'Harmonic Convergance'. Shooting fails to do anything.

His forward knights unit charge my skinks who flee, he passes his redirect and charge the saurus, I hold but he fails his charge. His rear knights reform to respond to my right flank, this takes him into the forest which turns out to be a venom thicket. He fails one dangerous terrain test but pass his ward save. In magic he gets 'Wyssans Wildform' of with irresisteble force on his knights and his damsel takes a wound. His shooting kills four skinks on my generals unit, panic is passed.

My fleeing skinks rally and reform. Both my temple guards and my saurus keep backing away. My general and bsb leae the bunker and goes into safety behind the tower. My rightmost skink moves up on his knights flank. My cold ones and stegadon backs up. In magic I get both my spells off, the 'Iceshard Blizzard' goes onto his knights and 'Harmonic Convergance' is boosted. My shooting fails to do anything again.

    Turn 3 – Brettonia
His knights charge my saurus and I hold, he loose two knights going over the wall. In magic he again IF 'Wyssans Wildform' and again rolls number 9, this time he gets a one to wound though so his damsel survives. His shooting drops two skinks from the former generals unit. They fail their panic and runs two inches. In combat, even with minus one to hit he still drops seven saurus, I completely whiff my attacks back and I get run down.

I charge my temple guards into his men-at-arms, hoping to delay them long enough for the rest of my army to deal with his knights behind my lines. I move my leftmost skinks into the building to shoot at his damsel. My rightmost skinks keep circling his knights. My former generals unit rallies. My cold ones and stegadon turns around to face his knights. In magic I IF a boosted 'Harmonic Convergance' and promptly loose three wizard levels. In shooting I drop his damsel so now all magic is off the able. I also drop one knight! In combat he kills four temple guards and I kill seven of his, I win combat but he holds.

His forward knights reform to face me. His rear knights fail their test to march and move up normally, he loose three knights(!) from dangerous terrain. His shooting drops one more skink from the former generals unit. In combat he kills another four temple guards, I kill a a couple back and he breaks me but fail to catch my last guy!

    Turn 4 – Lizardmen
I charge my cold ones and my stegadon into his bsb unit, I charge my rightmost skinks into the flank of his archers. My former generals unit move up to shoot his knights. My last skink unit move out of the building behind his men-at-arms. In shooting I kill two men-at-arms. In combat I roll a measly one impact hit and proceeds with whiffing my attacks. I kill a couple knights, he kills one cold one. i win but he pass his steadfast test. Two more knights and he wouldn't have been steadfast! XD My skinks whiff their attacks, he dosn't and my skinks get run down XD. Oh, and my temple guard fail to rally and runs through the building only to fail his dangerous terrain. XD

My skinks move around harassing him, killing one archer with shooting. In combat my guys finally decide kill something and go on a killing spree, breaking his knights. I pursue with both units hoping to get away from the impending doom. My cold ones do well running twelve inches killing his last knight in the process. My stegadon however decides to only run a measly four inches, getting stuck right in the middle of hi whole army. XD

i had a blast this game, although I really need a plan for the battle for the pass scenario. It is hard when I loose my mobility as this force is not suitable for straight up combat. Still, it went pretty decently I think, with a difference of only 178VPs it was very close. Heck if I hadn't failed so miserably in the charge with my skinks against his peasants it would have been a draw. I think I should have paused there and assessed the situation properly and seen that it wasn't worth the risk with that charge. Still, that's why I play these training games, to learn things like that!

Hope you enjoyed it and feel free to post c&c, as always it is very much appreciated.

Best regards to you all and happy wargaming!

Thank you for this, I got put off Warhammer over the summer and haven't done anything since, but reading these and the prospect of your campaign has made me want to crack on again. I was just starting Lizards before this break so now you've inspired me to carry on with them. Thanks, and I look forward to seeing more, especialy the campaign.
