Thread: Placement of 3rd character with larger base.

  1. #1

Placement of 3rd character with larger base.

Ok, so this might be trivial but...

With a unit on 20mm bases the first two characters on 25mm bases are put on either side of the unit.

But where is a 3rd character on a 25mm base positioned?

Next to one of the other two, in the first rank. He can't 'rank up' behind one of the others, as he doesn't fit the unit's base footprint.

    Ok, that makes sense.

Is this described in the rules or just an assumption? Asking since I can't seem to find anything black and white in the rules.

Re: Placement of 3rd character with larger base.

It is not written out, and narrativums view there, while valid, isn't the only way to resolve it...

    A) As Narrativum said, as besides an already attached character besides an unit is still "besides of it in the front rank"

    Alternatively:

    B) There is a maximum of two "non-fitting" characters allowed to be attached to an unit, one to each side, as more than that and you are no longer placing them as asked for.

You have to check with your local gaming circle which interpretation you will go with.

In any case, as narrativum said, there is no hiding the the third character (if he can join) behind one of the other two, in a second rank of his own.

This is covered on page 98. Under "There's No Room!". The 3rd charater will not be able to join.

I think the "There is no room!" rule is intended to deal with situations where you can't fit in more character models due to confines of nearby units or impassable terrain, or when the unit's size otherwise limited. It is impossible to say from the context of the rulebook since their examples only deal with adding a single character to the unit and give no hint as to how to proceed with further characters.

I would, however, like to point out that you are allowed to form units made up solely of character models, and there is no suggestion that this unit would be limited to three models. One would think such an important facet of the rules would deserve mention.

Re: Placement of 3rd character with larger base.

Since the section (page before and that page) does not discuss nearby units and impassable terrian, I read it as charater not able to fit on the other side. So 2 characters max of a incompatible footprints. It maybe one of those rules that GW thinks its explained, so they don't think it needs to be FAQ'ed.

When the 1st 2 characters can join each other, they form a unit. Then the incompatible footprints apply. So if a 25mm character joins a 20mm character, its a unit with incompatble footprints so its decided who has the "unit footprint", When a another 25mm char joins that unit, if its a 20mm footprint, it would go on the other side of the 20mm char. if it was a 25mm footprint, then it would join next to the other 25mm footprint. I don't have a issue that the foot print needs to be declared when the 25mm and 20mm forms the unit. IMO it can be declared when the 3rd footprint joins.
