Thread: Can you ally with the same army?

Question Can you ally with the same army?

I am curious as the topic on allies in the Rules states "Battle brothers" is essentially allying with the same army. I see it that in effect you can "Ally" a different chapter / warband of the same race?
I'm asking because I feel like it should be possible fluffwise (it's a different chapter, or for IG it's a different part of the army (ie an Infantry army "allying" with a Tank Brigade), and also because it might produce some interesting sub 2000 point combinations (3 HQ choices + 3 troops? Yes please!)

Page 109 right under the picture of the Force Organisation Chart. In that paragraph lies your answer.

RAW was cited in the post above.

Practically, sort of. Marines allying with other marines (and IG allying with FW variant IG) can be functionally almost indistinguishable from allying with yourself.
    Awesome. Awesome to the head.

The quote is: "As with the primary detachment, all units in the allied detachment must be chosen from the same codex and this must be a different codex to the one used for the primary detachment.

    Sucks a bit Ah well.

you can however choose to use a double FOC, as tyranids are "forced" to do since they cannot allie with other races bar themself

    Well for example for IG:
if your infantry regiment "allies" with your heavy tank regiment, you take your infantry as troops and tanks as heavy support.

And yeah double FOC at 2K+, that's basically allying with yourself (you can take 2 fortifications and 2 allies at 2k points isn't it?)

At 2k+ you can either choose to have 2x your FOC, just double the numbers, so 6 elites etc, 2 allied attachments and 2 fortifications, as specified on page 110 second paragraph.

As far as I know the only way is to use FW armies like DKoK with IG.

Yes, really only the Forgeworld armies for right now . It's a shame allies can't ride in transports of the main army or vice versa, though - you can't get your main army riding in FW allies' vehicles (e.g. "regular" orks in a Warkopta).

On additional detachments - I was just looking at the rules and they don't say anything about prohibiting members from one detachment riding around in the vehicles of the other. Are people who are playing multiple detachments allowing cross-detachment vehicle usage based on it not having the limitation that allies have, or not letting it happen because they didn't specifically say that the different detachments can use each others' stuff? If it's allowed, I'm half surprised that FW didn't add a rule that their variant armies may ally with the parent army as battle brothers but are treated as being from the same army for the purpose of using transports (they could certainly sell a few more FW models with that rule...)

Yeah double force org opens up a multitude of options. DE for insance could take 6 Voidravens .....or a combo of 4 Ravagers and 2 Talos.....or beef up on FA slots and take something like 4 squads of Reavers and 2 units of Beasts.....2 Baron's......and 2 Archon's... I mean the list goes on
    Dark Eldar...

I agree with all of this except I do not think you could take two of the same special character as it is just one army still.

I agree with that. I don't think you could take Eldrad Ulthran and his twin brother Sidney.
