So our gaming group is picking this up...

The group I game with is picking this up, and while I have no interest in the warmachine half, the hordes half looks fun to me. I've chosen legion and minions. How nesasary are troops? I mean can I get away with warbeast and warlocks only for legion? I don't mind the gatormen for minions, and the farrow seem nice if I want to run Lord Carver.
I really really dislike the nyss models, though the ogrun seem ok.

Legion is the most beast-heavy faction in the game, and several warlocks get by just fine with only warbeasts and a couple of solos in their lists.

Is thargosh (I know I spelled that wrong, the guy with the wings and really big hand) 1 of the ones that does well with warbeasts?

Epic Thagrosh does 100% beasts. Typically you will see one or two heavies and then everything into shredders.

Now I find that taking a cheap unit of legionaires means you can get two rounds of combat on feat turn rather than a long rush, but it isn't needed.

The other Legion casters that can go all beasts is eVayl, pVayl, and Saeryn. Some like it with Kallas too.

In the end as long as you are willing to run shepherds or forsaken any caster would work, or you could say screw it and just take beasts anyway. I know only of my favorite lists is Team Badass: eThag, Typhon, proteus, carnivean, ravagor, scythean.

Absylonia works fine with all beasts as well, even though she probably wants at least the Spawning vessel.

Yeah, as Malorian said: eThags does beasts really well. I would still pick up a Forsaken and a pair of deathstalkers though.
Also, Spell Martyrs. Despite his looks eThags is quite fragile and more of a spellcaster than a combat character.
