    Staff of Ulthamar AP value?

    From Codex: Eldar p.51:
Eldrad Ulthran, Staff of Ulthamar -- 'In combat it always wounds on 2+ and ignores armour saves'

So is the Staff of Ulthamar
    a) An unusual power weapon (i.e. AP3, User Str)
    b) AP2 for ignoring every possible armour save value
    c) AP- but just ignoring armour saves
    d) Something else?

Please state your reasoning as well.

    C) Ap- but ignore armour saves.

It is not a power weapon or force weapon as it never states it anywhere. it is literally a staff that ignores saves as per its actual rules. Anyone arguing any differently is inferring things onto the rules that aren't there (I've seen people try to argue its a power weapon so Ap3).

And things that require tactics are BAD. The less tactics involved, the better, and it means less things can go wrong.

+1 for the above also. However, there are no rules in the main rules book for this situation. It probably means that nothing like this will exist in 6th once all of the old 4th books are updated.

Ok thanks. Just seems a bit OP at the moment since "normal" power weapons got nerfed to AP3. Oh well. That Eldrad sure is a tough nut to crack.

It's something that I suspect that would have been errataed to AP3 if they were bothering to do that, but since they didn't: enjoy your 5th ed style power weapon!
    Awesome. Awesome to the head.

Hardly OP, Eldrad only gets one attack and will have trouble wounding like most eldar due to low strength.

    Staff wounds on a 2+, doesn't it?

Indeed. Also with a rerollable (fortune) 3++ invulnerable save he is a nice tarpit if nothing else. I'm not saying he's a CC god but really annoying at least.

    It did?
Never had Eldrad in melee combat.
    Still hardly OP in melee.

Plus he's got two attacks! He's got a second Close Combat Weapon, and the staff isn't 2-handed, so he's actually got two attacks in Close Combat. Still not particularly OP, but with the ability to fairly easily wound anything, and soak up wounds like a beast, he's pretty much amazing for challenges.

With Divination, he can be right devastating, using Precog. He'll reroll hits and wounds and failed saves.

Guess it is just me that has been having bad luck with him.
No problem with casting powers but I think I have only managed to do a save once.
So most of the time it's LoS for him just to keep him alive.

There are still a couple of old style power weapons knocking around if you know where to look, I believe straken has one too, he doesn't carry a power weapon and so doesn't get nerfed, he simply carries a CCW that ignores armour.

Re: Staff of Ulthamar AP value?

I'd like to add that the Staff of Ulthamar is no AP- either. There is no AP for it at all and just because there is no AP doesn't make it AP- either. Not that AP - makes a difference anymore like it used to in 5th edition on the Vehicle table, but it's still nice to know.

Also, remember that Eldrad cannot use it to cast three spells if he is in close combat. If in close combat he can only cast two spells.

This point is now moot as Eldrad is Mastery Level 3 per the FAQ...

Re: Staff of Ulthamar AP value?

No, the point is not moot because of why he is mastery level 3. He is mastery level 1 because he is a psyker. Next he adds the spirit stones, so those make him Mastery level 2, Next, he has the Staff of Ulthamar, which makes him mastery level 3.

But, because on page 7 of the main rule book, it states that the codex ALWAYS trumps the main rule book, then you have to use the Staff of Ulthamar as written in the Eldar Codex. And in the Eldar Codex it says specifically " If Eldrad is not in an assult it can allow Eldrad to use a third psychic power per turn, which may be a psychic power he has already used that turn. "

So, he cannot cast 3 spells in an assult no matter what. Only two.

However, I'm fairly certain that he still has 3 warp charge from being Mastery Level 3, even though he can only use two powers. This means you could potentially still use a 1-WC power and a 2-WC one, if you had it.

What does the main rulebook have to do with it? This is the Eldar FAQ you're arguing about. It says Eldrad is Mastery 3, including his spirit stones, but nothing about including his staff. I think the only thing the staff does in context is allow him to use the same power twice when not in close combat, but he's got a flat three warp charge either way. You could easily argue that the staff gives him a fourth warp charge, though...
