Advice needed - Helping others learn their army

Hi, I'm in need to advice of how to go about helping someone else not just learn the game, but also learn how to use their army.

Both me and my dad have been collecting warhammer since 5th edition, however we have very rarely played many games. This summer I have been running a mini campaign with my Dad of his Empire vs my Orcs and Goblins, we're both still learning 8th and it just seemed like a fun way to learn the rules. However the problem is 8th is very much in favor of big blocks of infantry and I have run my Orcs and Goblins accordingly, my Dad on the other hand prefers to field lots of small units with no magical support at all, so far he has been tabled every game. Here's what we ran in the last game.

Night Goblin Boss with Shrieking Blade, light armour and shield
    Orc Boss BSB
    Night Goblin Shaman level 2
5 Wolf Riders with short bows and musician
29 Night Goblins with spears and shields, standard, muscian, netters 3 fantatics
24 Orc Boyz with addition hand weapons, muscian, standard
    15 Squigs with 5 handlers
    Rock Lobba with bully
    Mangler

    Total - 999

    Captain with warhorse
    10 Halberdiers with full command
    10 Crossbows with full command
    20 Spearmen with full command
    10 Archers with full command
    10 Handgunners with full command
    10 Swordsmen with full command
5 Pistoliers with muscian and outrider
    Great Cannon

    Total - 998

Ideally I would not want to resort to either deliberating weakening my army or writing up army lists for him to play with every game, however I don't want to discourage him from playing by beating him constantly because of his bad list. How do I go about helping him improve his game?

    thanks in advance

Some people just don't get it, or the army doesn't work the way they instinctively work.. Either way, you can start by talking through the game after each one, point out the moves you both made and the thought process behind your strategies.. eventually he will notice that the common thing you do is overwhelm his small units and that the flanking mechanism, doesn't work maybe the way he wants it to in his mind..point out how you made certain moves because you had no fear of any magic coming at you etc..

his list isn't really that squishy, minus the lack of a magic phase and a lot of extra points in command options. He shouldn't really be getting tabled.. Understanding target priority just comes down to knowing the game and playing lots. again, talking about things can really help..
I also find asking people why something is in their list to be quite effective.. sometimes there is no rational and they didn't even realize.

Well you have a few options for yourself and your father it seems.

    1. Change his army list. Not sure what models you have available, but if are using all the models you have... He can save points from getting rid of those obscene amounts of command models. Most of the units can just have a musician, well probably all of them. The points saved can go towards a wizard or even maybe a bsb, something to contribute. Warrior Priests are nice too.
    2. Target Priority... You father needs to pick a block and shoot the crap out of it, plain and simple. If he can whittle down one of your two blocks into something manageable, he has a better chance.
    3. You can change your list to make things more "fair."

If you aren't having fun, re-evaluate why you are playing this game...

If you are in Alaska, please PM!!! I would like to get more players in the area!!!

Change army for a battle... plan your own army list for 1000 points and discover, how that works... It could be an eye-opener.

Trade armies for a game or two. He'll understand both much better from the other side.
