An Angelic Host, a Dark Angels log a new army for a new edition

Oh hey, so with the release of 6th and the very soon release of Dark Vengeance I thought I'd do a Dark Angels log.

Now I've done 40k logs before but some have fallen out of use, my Empire log is what i tend to focus on, however DA are one of my favourite chapters, great lore great look and with a new release soon some great new models.

So I already have a full Ultramarines company which is nearly finished and currently my main army, I also have a company of space wolves which are currently set aside as i am not a huge fan of them in the new rules (at least not until i can afford a lot of drop pods), so as you can tell i like marines and i tend to do them in bulk :P

    My current plan of painting/buying:
I already own 5 sprues of the veterans upgrade sprue which of course is great cause it has 5 full marines on each, my plan is to make one into a command squad though that may wait till a codex incase theres something with a shiney banner.

the others I'm going to mix some of the robed marines with the new plastics which will give me about 40 marines, or 4 tacticals, i have 5 terminators already and will have another 10 with the 2 sets of terminators with the dark vengeance box. I've also picked up a bunch of bikes and Ravenwing conversion parts of ebay and again will have 2 sets of DV bikes so should have a decent sized ravenwing & Deathwing detachment.

So thats what i have to start with, I've already experimented with some bits and some painting. so enough of the blabber heres what we're all here for some shiney pics

First off my first deathwing sergeant, he's pretty much finished not sure about the shield on his shoulder though i think i may make it a bit more colourful, more of an experimental model would love some feedback.

I'm undecided on how to base the army, just did a moonscape on the sergeant but dunno if i want to change it to something else, any ideas?

I picked up a bunch of this stuff ages ago, i picked up Azrael and his little friend ages ago on ebay azrael they're both close to finished, i'm kind of hoping there will be a new azrael model cause although this one is awesome he's so tiny

And finally just a bunch of made up DA marines, hopefully by next week i'll have most the army built, so you'll get an idea of what the army will be looking like

So yeah any feedback would be appreciated always looking for some constructive criticism, i realise there will be alot of new DA logs so will likely have a lot of competition, but yeah i hope you like my stuff. Oh i've also ordered master of the ravenwing cause he's awesome will likely be one of the first things i paint in the new army, oh and if you're wondering the army will likely be the 3rd or 4th company (i prefer the 3rd's markings but they may prove frustrating to replicate)

Very nice stuff so far. I'm liking the posing on your basic marines. The bare faces on the first two models are looking good as well.

Looks like you're up to a good start here

I've also (re)fallen in the DA trap, exactly as I did the last time they had a codex, but my focus have improved since and this time the old models will actually be painted and the new Dark Vengeance box will bolster their ranks So expect some competition as I will start a plog on my own soon

And I'll be following this thread of course

Cheers bud, its one of the things i feel i can do well so i try and have as many faces as possible glad you like the basic marines, glad some are a bit more characterful as they will be bulking out DV marines

Competition is always good, only thing that motivates me to paint :P, I feel similar, my painting skills and speed have increased very well (did over 50 state troops in a couple of days in my fantasy plog) but i get lazy quickly and am very easy to distract. Can't wait to see some other DA armies some great ones already out there, bevulf's log in particular is very inspiring.

So annoyingly i've been force to paint ultramarines today (boooo!) basically despite my DV sets being dispatched thursday (and not living all that far from nottingham) my DV sets still havn't arrived so i'll have to wait till tomorrow

But i've been slowly working on the other terminators i have (nothing worth showing) but i also 100% finished the sergeant pretty pleased with how he's turned out not sure on the red sword on his shield thing. will take some pics of the DV stuff being built when it turns up, most likely tomorrow

So just thought i'd reply give a little update and show how annoyed i am with GW/Royal mail grrrr

Anyway feedback is welcome and the such proper update soon

Oh also anyone know how close rakarth flesh is to dheneb stone?

Like the colour you've got on the robes and Dwing. Mind sharing how you did it? Mine always ends up too warm. :-S

Thanks for the support glad you like it, took me ages to get a colour on the robes i liked, more than happy to share the recipe (struggled so much to find a guide myself) The robes and the DW armour are pretty much done in the same way, first a good coating of dheneb stone (hopefully rakarth has a similar colouring, will let you know when i pick up a pot), after that looking at a sepia wash, If you're using the new sepia wash try to go light especially on the DW as you don't want it to dark in the recess, then highlight again with dheneb leaving the recesses darker, then i basically mix dheneb, bleached bone and white till i reach the colour i want i try to use less white on the robes to give it a slightly warm/creamy look, and then more white for the DW to make it very cold i also do an edging highlight of white on the DW to make them look super pale, hope that makes sense i'll do a little guide later this week when i get some painting done.

So my DV stuff arrived yesterday woooo, got building pretty quick and i have to say im really impressed with a lot of the models, oddly some of the ones i wasn't to sure about i really like. I've built both sets of marines and one set of the bikes and one set of terminators and thought i'd take some pics (this will be a double post for cause of pics)

First off the tacticals, now i do have another set of just the tactical marines on order so as to make my 3rd and 4th squads complete but the first and second squads are built and ready to go.

So this is my first squad, may as well stick with sergeant Raphael, replaced the plasma cannon with a robed model and then 3 other normal robed dues with bolt guns (may edit the back packs make them look more troop like)

Second Squad led by sergeant Dumah, again 4 marines made from the veterans sprue including the sergeant himself, bit difficult to see in the picture but he has a big DA symbol on top his back pack

I've already started to try and convert some of the DV marines, although they are awesome there are only 4 different poses but head swaps arn't to difficult as you can hopefully see. Also started to repose my 3rd sergeant Grigori, his other arm will be straight as if aiming a pistol.

Finally for this first of a double post my already built DW squad, not to exciting posed wise but will likely swap a couple of these out with one of the 2 repeat termies you get in the DW squad, (also trying to work out how i'm going to convert the new DW sergeant)

Re: An Angelic Host, a Dark Angels log a new army for a new edition

    ....

The next few pics are just some of the new stuff, I'm super blown away with the Chaplain, i wasn't to keen on the model when i first saw it but now i have one really is awesome, i like that the head is completely seperate making it easy to switch up, i've made the plasma pistol a bit straighter than how they've done it prefer the pose my way, also something which doesnt come across in the pics is just how huge this guy is, he looks huge!

Also quite pleased with the RW models, think the lean may be a little to over the top, will likely straighten up the second set, also picked up the finecast master of RW cause he is amazing model, will likely be the first thing i paint i think, though may do the normal bikes with him, this is the one model i love being FC, i have an old metal one converted to be a pre heresy bike and he just does not stay on flying bases i find and weighs a tonne

Thought i'd post a closish up of two of the awesome terminators, these 2 look amazing better than i thought originally, though i understand the AC dude has split people somewhat

Now this next bit could cause some contention , i'm a little disappointed with the librarian, now i still do like him but i though originally he looks much better, i find his face is a little squished, and he looks kind of small in someways i've stuck a pic with him next to ezekiel, i have another one i'm planning on converting so i'll try and get pics up soon

so yeah, not to exciting but thought i'd show off some of the new stuff and keep you updated as to what i'm going to build/paint first

    as always questions/criticism/comments always welcome

Cheers, this is quite bad to say, but i actually cannot remember, I think it was almost certainly a regal blue base then i added enchanted blue leaving the recesses and folds still dark, then a final highlight of just enchanted then finally highlighting the edges with enchated mixed with white, as i said i'm not to sure, i'll be starting on the DV tomorrow most likely so i'l post progress pics on him

So hey again, just small update, i got a whole bunch of ravenwing bikers in the post today so after fixing them up a bit i got round to spraying, so this is just a general progress thing showing i've managed to spray the black things black and the green things green, so really i'm already half way through

Really enjoying this project so will likely crack on this evening, going to try and finish one of the basic marines so stick around and i'll stick one up here when done

Re: An Angelic Host, a Dark Angels log a new army for a new edition

So yeah i carried on did a test model, pretty pleased with the turn out, i still need to do the company markings and the such, i also need to take a better picture in some proper light.

I'd love some feed back etc

i'm gonna try for the 4th company markings on the knee pad, but if that proves to tricky i'll likely just stick with 5th co like they're painted on the website, next maybe a RW biker? that or the rest of the squad

Great progress, I've started converting my DW models from the DV box and so far I've done a head swap on the duplicate terminator and replaced his arm, and reposed the captains arm so he doesn't have that racket holding pose any more... And then I swapped the AC guys head for another one.

Looking forward to a finished model

Thanks, I'm still doing testers and such so i can crack on with some of the characters etc but really fun, pretty much got the tacticals down so hopefully they will get turned out pretty quick over the coming days

Still to work out how to convert the other DW squad, i like pretty much all the poses tbh though don't want them to repeated, gonna see if i can find some pics of peoples conversions, you posting yours in a thread? I may hopefully finish a model soon, my 40k progress is much slower than my fantasy for some reason, librarian will be my first i reckon :P

So after the success of my tactical tester, i thought i'd try one of the ravenwing, these are some of my favourite models and i now i have 10 bikers to paint so i thought i'd give a little test on the sergeant as i have a spare one of him if it doesnt work out, as with everything so far he isn't finished but the important bits are pretty much done. so yeah thoughts and teh such welcome

As always comments and criticism welcomed

Looking good, I really like the colour you've achieved on the Death Wing. Good to the DV models are easily convertible. Looing forward to seeing the rest of them painted!

Haha seems a lot of people are moving towards DA now, such great models, I did start a small force ages ago but put them off for my other marine armies glad i have a lot of the conversion sprues, will hopefully give my army a good look

I finally finished the DA tactical, not 100% on if I like his knee pad or not, hard to get the checks straight, does anyone have any tips?

Thought I'd take a pic of him next to his brother marines from the other companies have

Quite the collection there...and it loooks like a good start on this force...
I like how the new models grant a lot more details on your marines...gives the chance to make up a nice force...
Its cool what you did with the leftover models you had..I will be looking into this as you get along...
