    Shadowplayers gaming club terrain log

    Hi there everybody!

A bit of proper background is only fair in the start of a new thread, and here it is:

Last spring we realized that our gaming club would be celebrating 20 years this year (2012) so we started to make plans. We did a bit of wrestle since we deal with most nerdy hobbies. At last we decided to make a wargaming tournament consisting of both Fantasy and 40 K. Through my day-time job I came in contact with a EU-program through which I was able to secure all the resources needed. We got the astonishing amount of 90.000 SKR from LEADER (the name of the program). This is 10 322 Euro or 12900 dollar or 8148 pounds. Finally I could put all my years of boring buerocratic writing to something useful! Of this budget roughly a fifth will be used for terrainmaking which I will present here. Sometimes in the form of stages with a somewhat of a tutorial and sometimes simply a finished piece.

We had terrain for 5 or maybe 6 tables as we begun. The tournament is planned for 80 players (40 fantasy, 40 40K) so we had around 350 pieces to be made. We wanted the terrain to be special so we decided to make a table for each army!

This was the background and if we fast forward to today we have a whole lot of terrain already built. However not as much as I would hope since the tournament is barely 2 months away.

Let me now present the artists whos work you´ll be viewing in this thread:

Kalle: Our guru, our mentor, our shining beacon of light in the darkness which we plummeted into in the beginning. A man with more than 15 years of terrainmaking in the backpack. He has proved irreplaceable since he has so many small tips and tricks which he gladly share. Unfortunatly he lives a bit off, has kids and other activites which take up most of his time, so the number of pieces made by him are quite limited. Before the project he hade single handed built all of our terrain, none of us had ever built anything.
Walle: My strong right hand. Not only is he making loads of terrain, he helps me with the economy and administration as well.
Tjalle: (Nickname for Tjarls in swedish) The mastermind, the witful overlord at the gaming club. Built my first piece in february this year.

We have built the foremost of everything, but however we have a few small gnomes that help us from time to time.
Strangely, none of them rhyme with "-alle"

Nisse: Lizardmen player who pretty much focused on this table
Fähre: Focused on orks n gobbas. (The untrustworthy greenskins)

Now as the formal introduction has been made I shall hastly proceed towards displaying our work. Please remember that any type of pointers, comments, critisim, creative douchebaggery and cheerise is always welcome.

    --------------------------------------

Well start off with the first piece of terrain I ever made, a ruined elven waystone for the woodelftable:

I followed up by making a few pieces for the Ogre Kingdoms table. In an attempt to capture the spirit of their fighting lust a fighting pit was a must!

The process was fairly simple. A masonite board in the bottom and some styrofoam to get the basic shape. The I covered the whole thing with filler to get the slope I wanted. The edges were covered with a mixture of water, PVA glue and gravel from a local lake. (Last picture shows the mixture)

Note: This is sometime before we figured out that straight edges on the base is not as good as irregular shapes. They simply look too digital.

Here are the pictures of the finished piece along with two other ogre kingdoms pieces. The pointy things in the corner were carved out of wood and initially meant to be tusks. But since my skill in making them look like tusks wasn´t nearly enough they got to be stone of some kind. I also threw a couple of weapons in there to make it look like the pit is actually used.

The other two pieces are a bonfire and a "sinister statue". The bonfire is simply sticks glued together. I choose not to put any snow on it to give the impression that this place usually is very hot. However watching the pictures again Im thinking that maybe some should be added to the edges, what do you think?

The sinister statue is made out of a few styrofoam pieces glued together. The middle column beeing the largest. The ogre symbols were made by freehanding them on in black then paitning them red but leaving a thin line of black around the edges. I basiclly took every symbol from the ogre book that meant something unpleasant.

For WoC there was only one thing in mind. Blood for the blood god! So a bloodfall I did.

The idea from the begging was to use water effects on it but we havn´t quite figured out how to do it yet without everything running to the bottom.

To fill out the post i´ll throw in a couple of pictures from when we bought all the material for our gaming boards In the pictures, Walle and Nisse

This is the start of three Dark Elves statues. I used foamboard to cut out the basic shape. The wooden stick was basiclly making it easier to glue them together, nothing more. With the help of filler it turned in to a massive piece.

Once finished they looked like this. Not quite happy with the paintjob however.

The guy in the blue cap has not been presented earlier, his name is Mange and he is our house-mascot. He provides us with music and tv-series and a few laughs. Walle is Working on a piece for WoC on his scratch-built foamcutter.

The snow in the Fighting Pit should be tinted red in patches... I mean, Ogres not using the fighting pits? Of course not!

The Ogre table looks particularly good. Now, show us some 40K terrain!

How foolish of me to miss such a thing. Ofcourse I´ll fix some blood in there.

For now you will have to do with the ork shed, a few more updates will be focused on fantasy as we started by making all the fantasy terrain. I want to keep it somewhat in chronological order to show our progress as total terrain maker noobies.

I just want to clarify that only a fifth will be used for terrain. And about a third of this goes into making the gaming boards themselves.

    ----------------------------

Early on we aquired som hirst arts molds to ease the process of a few pieces. This here is built by Walle and later painted and based by me.

It will be used on a table with the basic idea "Empire settled in lustria and simply died or left". Since there aren´t 20 armybooks we had to freestyle some.

    To fill out the post:
It is truly comfortable to have theese larger cans of paint when you build terrain. They are cheap, about 4,5 euro each at the local paintshop. I would never use them on models, but on terrain they work like a charm.
I also had to throw in a picture of Walle taking a coffee break, satisfied that the ruins were finished. We have realized that it often helps us to finish each other pieces. For once we built something, we are kinda tired of it. So by painting for each other we get something new and fresh to work with.

Forgot to say Thank you in the previous post ^^

    ---------------

Since I got up so early this morning, I have time for one more post before work. The next few posts will deal with a small project itself. The Dwarven Mountain Fortress. Or as some kid from a school class said (sometimes younger students come field trippin) "Wow, who built this elven castle". "No its a dwarwen fortress, in a mountain" was my slightly offended response. The kid however, he never cared. He simply called out for his friende "Joppe! Have you seen this elven castle?!" And after a few attempts to correct this fallen soul I gave up.

Ever since I told this story to the rest of our usual members it has become known as the elven castle and they find amusement in mocking me since I am a Dwarven player.

This is about as much progress I made the first day of building

In the first image we see a new face. Hampus, one of our youngest members. He´s more into magic and boardgaming but has tried to build some terrain as well. Twice he has started on a project then given it to me with the words "Fix the rest". Once he even claimed to have built one piece, more on that later however.

In this stage it is pretty straight forward. Loads of styrofoam and a few old glass coasters in front of "the gate". The stairs would have been impossible to make without Walles homebuild foamcutter.

On a side note. In the background we can see Walle working on a Dark elves tower and Nisse working on a lizardmen temple ruin.

I had to post the first picture because that´s a look Walle gives me from on and off. Or maybe just about every time I do something. He thinks I´m way too spontenous. Ill give him that it sometimes is true, that one should try methods on a piece of crap first and later on the actual piece. That´s boring though.

Here are the pictures from the night I glued a mountain. Pva glue and simple toothpicks were used. Then came the tricky part, applying pressure on something both point and brittle. I solved it by hanging cables and weighing them down. The cardboard worked suprisingly good in saving the foam from marks.

The whole thing has been painted using my airbrush. Hirst arts barricades have been added. The cobblestoneroad in front of the gate is simply cardboard cut out in round shapes. If I had more time I would probably moulded them individually. Perhaps I´ll go back and do it later on, depends on the outcome when it´s all finished.

Lets fast forward the mountain thingy to where I am today

It doesn´t show very well in the picture but the door was given lots of love. I tried to make it darker in the top and also to add some greyish blue from underneath as if the snow reflected up. Unfortunatley the way I did it with lots of color and lots of painting before the previous layer had dried kinda swooped away all the texture. The rivets will be painted as well. The door was simple to make. First i cut out the shape i wanted in thin cardboard. Then I glued pieces of wood to it. Since I had the carboard in the bottom it was easy to cut the wood to be in a door shape.

In the following pictures the ground is painted and in the last picture Walle gives me that look again. I think it was beacuse I tried out new ways of painting using two brushes dabbing them all over the place with two different colors at the same time to make smoother transitions. Worked out quite well. But who cares, there will be snow all over the place.

Since theese pictures I have sprayed the whole piece in icebluegreyish and I´ll get some pictures of that later on

Re: Shadowplayers gaming club terrain log

Yet another break at work, and I figured that it doesn´t count as selfbumbing if your´e already the top post

This post will deal with a graveyard for vampire counts. The basic building is hirstarts and than a scratchbuilt roof ontop of that. I went overboard with the PVA to ensure myself that the building wouldn´t collapse.

This piece actually has three creators. Contribution presented in the order they were made
Möller - Made the first floor. (The hirst arts basics)
    Tjarls - Made the roof
Walle - Detailed the base and painted the whole piece except for a few deatail
Tjarls - Painted the windows and a few other details such as brass cherub and sign

When asking your girlfriend however she has any old panties she doesn´t use anymore, there are many different reactions which can be projected upon you. And whatever reaction you get they will be changed to either relief or annoyance when you explain that it´s for making ogre huts.

Why panties? They have such a good structure! I tried with socks as well but the fabric show way to much. And when trying to hide it away with flock it simply turns into a 40K camotent.

These were actually quite tricky to make and I´m not all that happy with the outcome, but they´ll do. Dipping fabric in a 50/50 mix of PVA and Water works like a charm though.

Ill finish this post with a bit of Skaven. A giant Warpstone that will act as a haunted mansion rulewise. And a Mine entrance. The whole board has the ambition of beeing underground.

The mine is made from foam covered in filler. All wood is from a "bamboo" mat. Dont know the english word for it but its the kind you lay under plates whilst eating dinner. Simply cutting away the threads gives you much wood for around a dollar.

The warpstone is a blob of insulation foam painted in so many ways that I cant remeber them all. I think I repainted the whole thing 5 times and still couldn´t get it quite right.

Rulewise this piece will be a magic circle for the dwarven table. This is the piece I mention earlier on where Hampus tried to steal all the glory. His contribution is the larger runestones. Yet he tries to claim he is the mastermind behind it all. The rest was built and carved by me. All painting was done by me as well.

    Still to do, add snow

Re: Shadowplayers gaming club terrain log

Remember earlier on when Walle was constructing a Dark Elves tower in the background? Here's the result:

Walle got very dissapointed, the piece didn't turn out anything like he wanted so he was about to bin it when I stepped in and convinced him not to. I added a base to it and threw some paint in there and voilá. It turned out quite nice. Still some water effects to be added but aside from that it's finished.

The paintjob was done by using an airbrush, watered out paint and high psi. I "blobbed" the paint on at close range and then used the air to press the colors around. (It was a mistake from the beginning, but it seemed nice so I covered the whole thing that way.)

Well, still on top and therefore I´ll keep posting.

I always feel like a mummy during the morning, so Tomb Kings scenery will be perfect.

First a picture of Walle with a TKpiece in the making.
picture 2-3 is of the temple which is supposed to be at a tables edge and to create the illusion of beeing continous
    4-6 are simply obelisks.
All of the pieces are hirst arts

Walle is alsou our master moulder, or in plain english our mad chemist. He makes his own moulding forms, he has his own ways of mixing water effects and he has about every frikking chemical even related to wargaming at home. So naturally, he has made theese rivers and lakes

There is actually more to this piece then meets the eye. Since hirst arts only have two sides textured, for this piece I had to carve the third by hand. I was quite happy to realize how eazy plaster was to carve in.

This here piece is actuallt quite fun. The constructioning begun somewhat 13 years ago. It has then survived moving, being stuffed away and general abuse. It was never finished though and the legend tells us.

"Emil wanted to create terrain, so he did. The elder members however laughed him straight to the face when he showed the result. Emils heart was broken, he walked away from our gaming club for the day, but he walked away from terrainmaking forever."

I picked it up this year and made the touch ups needed for it to be a finished piece.
