flyers and hover mode rules queery.

Ok I came across this yesterday in a 2k match, my opponent had 2 fliers, both with hover mode special rule.
Now I know flyers must start in reserve, does this apply to hover mode variants too, ie (flyer, hover mode).
Because the opponent I had argued that because it had hover mode, it could start on the table, and even after scouring the rule book, nothing I could find said (flyers with hovermode could start on field instead of reserves) I even stated as much, so enter arguement..... Flyers reguardless of subtype must start in reserve, is what I read into the rules as written. Please help on this, as I'm rather curious to find out if it was legal, or deliberate cheating to gain 1st turn advantage.

A flyer in hover mode is still a flyer, even if it uses the targeting and movement restrictions of a fast skimmer.

That said, how did it even get into hover mode? Deployment happens before the game begins, which means before the movement phase, which in turn means before the option to hover even exists.

Or, in other words, you got done. The "hover to deploy on the board" option simply does not exist.

Excellent, looks like it was what I thought it was.
I'll have to pull them up on it next time.
Apparently it was gw approved to start a flyer on the board, in hover mode 1st turn, I stated bull, its a flyer reguardless of subtype, therefore it had to be reserve. I got done, but he lost the game anyway, tactics overcomes str of arms (i had a smaller army XD)

This I don't necessarily agree. The rule says that it's treated exactly as a Fast Skimmer. To what extent do we apply this modification? Do Fliers in hover mode have the ability to skyfire?

I would favour the ready where instead of "Flyer, Hover", it becomes "Fast, Skimmer, Hover".

OT: No, even in this reading the Flyer cannot be deployed since you choose which mode it'd be in when you move - which is before deployment.
