    My Ancient Ulthwè Army log

    Hi all!

First of all, apologies for my bad english: it's not my language, so be patient please.

I started the hobby about twenty years ago and I always played with Eldar: I loved them since Space Crusade expansion, and I always thought they're far more original and interesting than just plain "space elves". I liked the fluff and the models were awesome, thank to the unique talent of mr. Jes Goodwin. Ok, that's enough: I can spend all day talking about Eldar virtues

So I started with 2nd edition, playing and learning to paint in the same time. I choose Ulthwè because I liked its background (military based society and the finest seers; and Ulthran!) and the striking contrast black/yellow of the colour scheme.
A large part of my army are old pieces: almost all the aspect warriors, the Harlequins, dreadnoughts (ok, Wraithlords today) and some other models. I've got something new as well, but that's why I named this log My Ancient Ulthwè Army.
Normally I just paint for use models in games, but I try to do it as best as I can.
At the moment I have not many decent photos but I was very eager to open this log, so let's begin with an angry Avatar leading a host of Guardians and Wraithguards through mysterious ruins. Hope enjoy it!

I really like what I'm seeing, great job on painting as well as the colour scheme! I might be biased though, having also gone with blue as a complementary colour for Ulthwé...

You're right. Actually many of my models have a bluish tone, cause years ago I didn't feel confy highlightning black with grey. This customized Wraithlord for example, seems a bit a "dark Alaitoc", I guess

Nice work so far! I like the 2nd edition look of it all (red and yellow guns everywhere!). The blueish highlights really work though, so I wouldn't change that if I were you.

Thank you, you're really kind. It's true: most of my inspiration is from first Eldar Codex. Recently i feel attracted by more militaresque color patterns and I'd like to start a little side-army list of Eldar Pirate Corsairs (I always liked the concept, since Rogue Trader handbook) like that. Anyway, I'm fond of Eldar because they can be exotic and colorful.

What's Ulthwè without guardians and seers? I think that Farseer was the very first character I painted so long ago. I always used it and it's like an old friend.
I know: warlock in blue and yellow seems an Alaitoc pal. I decided to give blue robes to warlocks detached to squads in order to make a contrast with all the other black guys. My intention is to paint in black just Farseers and Seer Council Warlocks.

The first one is a frankenstein which I completed last year. Maybe it's a bit weird looking, but I like it. The second one is the very first dreadnought (Wraithlord ) I bought and painted. Recently I replaced the old lascannon with a brightlance and remade the base so it can fit better near the others models. Maybe that old zig zag decoration is childish but I don't want to change it.

Surely these wraithlords are old looking but I still appreciate that insect-like design.

The Dire Avenger Exarch model is one of the best looking, according to my point of view. Simple and elegant. I replaced that hand with a powerfist years ago. Today I sell it as a gauntlet in-built shimmer shield generator

I arranged a powerfist for the Exarch after the release of the third Eldar Codex. Maybe it's a bit gummy, but playable. The red one was intended to be a squad leader and I painted it during 2nd edition (head is from an old Wood Elf War Dancer, as you see).

Ok, the Exarch is really silly. I wanted to do it in a different way, like certain cheap plastic toys. I was young and reckless , etc, etc.

To be honest I bought it of second hand and it was mostly painted. But it was all blue (like near the engines air vents), very few shades, no highlights, many details not done, turret was badly assembled so I replaced it with a Forgeworld one, some bits missing (like sh. catapult). And the cockpit hatch was glued and the pilot was poorly painted.
So I half repainted it, trying to darken the hull with layers of shades and adding all the yellow details, in order to bring a touch of Ulthwè. I think it's still very bright and colorful: I think I'll use it as a command veichle, maybe for a Seer Council or another kind of HQ retinue.

I apologize for photos' quality, but I have a cheap camera. Nevertheless I hope the results are acceptable. Comments are welcome and I ask you a suggestion: what would you put on the bases? Normally I use green grass and add some grey rocks here and there, but for Harlequins I would choose something more evocative. I'm waiting for your tips.

And here it comes... a Wraithseer!

I really love this model design. For you is it old-school painted or is it more present-looking?

Don't bother about your camera, the pictures are really high quality, even the lighting is great (good brightness, very diffuse, no shadows and reflections, colour balance seams fine ie. your white is white). I like the green and yellow patterns on the Harlequins.

I still use the older versions of the Howling Banshees (and some other Aspects), nice to see more of them here. Great plog, looking forward to seeing more.

Nice works, highly detailed and accurate.
How an amazing army this would be with two squadron of well painted warwalkers...

Here we are again. Some wraithguards this time. And Ulthran. I admit I painted it swiftly in order to play. Hope it's acceptable.

One question: how can I post a large pic, not just thumbnails like that? I tried to drag photos from my folder directly in the post and seemed to work, but when I send it the page jams. Thanks.

Pretty clean for a "swift" painting. Good tabletop-standard for sure. Just the red on the wraith-weapon-barrels doesn't do it for me.
