LED lightbulb you can control (colour, brightness etc) from your mobile device

I thought it might be of interest to pass this on for those MP&Ters who do lots of model photography and for those interested in getting the perfect lighting for painting (daylight bulbs etc) - I ran across this Kickstarter a couple of days ago and found it very interesting:

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...ulb-reinvented

Essentially it's an LED lightbulb that comes in edison, bayonet or downlight styles, and it hooks into your WiFi network and allows you to control it fully for colour, dimming etc via a mobile app.

I thought it might be of interest for the serious painters/photographers out there to at least see there's an option that would allow you to choose the exact colour temp you want, and to adjust with your app while you're working. Even if you don't like Kickstarters crowdsourcing, this project has well and truly passed its funding goal so it will turn up at some point as a product you can buy via other means.

Obviously this idea has many other uses in the home and it's a really cool idea (I like the kids nightlight/gradual wake up light options), but the painting aspect had me pondering (although I have a daylight bulb already) so thought I'd share

It's a nifty idea, but still very gimmicky. There's nothing that this thing adds that a cheap IKEA led spotlight already doesn't. A hobbyist or photographer would be better served with a couple of cheap white led lights to hit the miniature from multiple angles.

There are some serious doubts over this Kickstarter as covered on Reuters: http://blogs.reuters.com/felix-salmo...-lifx-edition/

A very interesting and enlightening (hah!) read, thanks for the link. Hopefully they will be able to release a product that will meet people's expectations but I am going to wait and see it out there and bedded into the market before I decide to get some. I do find it interesting that their last project hasn't actually delivered to backers yet - delays can happen but surely you'd get that sorted before jumping into a new project?

I do hope the technical challenges will be able to be overcome at some point by some company as the concept is still awesome, but we will see.

I will leave this thread open as it might still be interesting to discuss lighting options/innovations that relate to our hobby; but if mods feel it is better locked or moved to Random Musings that is entirely understandable.

My hobby sold this thing. Was a no-brainer for me and I'm still very very happy with it.

Underneath there's a ring of about 40(!) small white LED lights.

    WHAT!?

Their last project, after all, was basically a collapsible cardboard box; it raised $184,500 — well above its $12,500 goal — and was meant to be delivered in July. The backers are still waiting; the most recent shipping date is mid-October.
    That's just criminal.
