    Pariah

The above is now available to download via Black library!

Shocked there isn't a thread already on this book (or if there is my search skills have failed me)

Anyone already read this as an early access, what were your impressions? I can not wait to read this over the weekend.

My impressions are it's fantastic, jaw-dropping and sets the stage for a brilliant trilogy that is going to hold the fate of the galaxy in it's grasp.

My review sums up my thoughts. I do hope that the ending isn't received the same way as Priests of Mars' ending was because Pariah's is so much more cliffhangery.

It is a fantastic book. Gives me the same vibe the Shira Calpurnia books did, but with the same style that I loved in Eisenhorn and Ravenor.

The only part I didn't like is the inclusion of what is fast becoming the newest facepalm meme in the 40k universe. I think it may be the line that was your favorite SH. It would be the most badass line in the book if all of a sudden every story I read didn't have some craziness involving it.

I think I know what you mean, and that was my second favourite line.

    I've just finished the book.

For the first hundred or so pages I had a sinking feeling - had the backstory been retconned? But, as I read through it that feeling melted away, and I started to think 'has Dan been reading Iain Bank's The Bridge'?

That too melted away towards the last third, and was replaced with 'freaking heck, this is a good twist'!

The only thing that was a little jarring for me was the MacGuffin (as mentioned in the above spoiler) - it's just too..... convenient? I understand that Dan wants to build a mythology around that, but it almost felt like a shoehorn.
What it has done is make me want to re-read both the Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies!

Very twisting and convoluted novel in parts, but a great read nonetheless. It takes your preconceptions about the what the novel will contain and discards them almost contemptuously in place of a greater story. The story of course, like 'Legion' did in the case of the changing eye colour' gives you hints from the get go what is really happening, if you pick them up.

That's why I referred to a feeling of 'retcon'.
Also did think if this was happening during her coma - and that the whole Deathblow character was somehow, either ravenor or eisenhorn projecting in.
I take it noone has read The Bridge to pick up on that then?

Its a brilliant start to the trilogy! As others have said, it leaves you thinking "wait, what?" for a good 1/3 of the book. The last few chapters really starts to set the scene though and are so well written they'll keep you glued to the pages! Having said that, once the book moves into the Church, I couldn't help but feel a very strong "Da Vinci Code" vibe, all the talk of graels and such, it seemed almost word for word in some parts. I do love Dan Brown mind so thats in no way a critique!

If you havent already; order it now!

I'm about half way of the book now. It reads really easily by the way, there are vague hints of more known characters.

For some reason the vibe of the story so far really reminds me of tv series such as Life on Mars and its "sequel" Ashes to Ashes.

It seems you aren't alone; Art is Resistance has mentioned The Bridge, which plays with similar themes.

All spoiler-tastic, of course, so I shan't say any more!

I must admit i spent time in the novel looking for anagrams in people's names to try and give me an idea who they might be, but never even got near guessing

I'm almost done with the book, quite the revelation! I'm a bit bummed out, not because the book was bad, but because it's almost finished, meaning I have to wait another 1-2 years to know how it will continue!

Only a year. Unless it gets shifted back.

I'll be honest, I loved every moment of it. I'm going back over it again, and it's a great read.

Penitent is out in 2014, I think Dan is going back to Gaunt's Ghosts in 2013.
