Thread: What would it take to get you to play GW's other game?

What would it take to get you to play GW's other game?

I have been a 40k player for a good 7-8 years, on and off. I played a fantasy demo once about 5 years ago and made up an excuse for why I didn't like it. Actually the truth of the matter was that I didn't like it because the demo was played on a 2'x2' table and there was no opportunity to do anything but "Charge!"

Several years later, GW released the new Ogre Kingdoms book and the new Vampire Counts book, both of which made me turn my head and go "I should buy some of those!" Then I bought just one mini. I already had so much 40k stuff to paint! I was hard to justify buying more models.

So, what would convince you to jump the gap to another GW game, whether that game would be fantasy or 40k?
If you already play both, what convinced you to?

Fantasy was my first love when I started to get into the hobby, then my erstwhile parents went and got me the 40k boxed game for Christmas by accident.

Re: What would it take to get you to play GW's other game?

Well. I did switch games to War of the Ring when it came out. The main reasons for that were a much better rules set than either Warhammer and cheaper miniatures. Then GW basically dropped all support for the mass battle LotR game in favor of the skirmish game (not an unreasonable decision with the Hobbit coming out) and basically forced me out.

As for the Warhammers. A better set of rules would be needed to get me playing either game regularly, cheaper miniatures would be needed to get me buying figs for either game, (well, and a job )

I suspect the "something else" option may be popular... money...

When I first got into GW I bought 40k stuff because their models looked really nice and Fantasy models at the time had really big hands and just weren't as attractive. But then Fantasy models started looking better and that got me interested in their models instead of 40k. If I had an airbrush i'd probably be more interested in painting 40k vehicles.

They'd have to reduce the price by about 50% then I'd snap it up. I've been playing 40k on and off for ~15 years and dabbled in fantasy once, right at the start when I got a bit of everything, but really the cost of maintaining 2 armies in 2 GW systems is prohibitive. I'd need to pay out about £150 just to get started on a new core fantasy army with rules, and I just feel that's much better spent (on my main army, hobby supplies, or complete armies from other gaming systems).

I don't see an option for "nothing, I won't play it".

This, mostly. Although if there was the option to field the army I actually like I might start fantasy some day. As it stands though: I absolutely loathe painting hordes of the same model and I can't stand the thought of having to paint rank upon rank of boring infantry.

This sums it up perfectly. The ranks are so boring to paint and they are very stiff and linear in game according to me. I like the more skirmish units that I can pose however I want to.

Of the big 3, I'm entirely Fantasy now, played 40K back in second edition. IMO the trouble is that I don't find it as fun as other games from that universe. I'd rather spend my time playing Necromunda or Epic. Also, whenever I see people playing 40K, they're all Mareenz...so it just looks boring nowadays. I also read the 40K forums from time to time, and a lot of what happens in there scares me.

I'd need an opponent to play against, I'd need to finish painting all of my 40k models first, and the models would have to be cheap enough to make it worth starting a new army.

Rewrite the core rules. To me 3rd edition 40k onwards is an awlful rule set and sold my fully painted 3000+ pt army a couple of years ago. I stick with fantasy and all those other amazing games that are now out there from other game companies.

A considerable (50%+) decrease in price and a rebalancing of the armies.
Trying to convince Warseer that GW are anything less than perfect is like trying to teach a horde of zombies that lettuce is a perfectly acceptable alternative to brains.

Rewrite the core rules, reduce the price of minis by 50% minimum. Thats what it would take to get me back into warhammer fantasy. On the other hand, there is always KoW that accommodates my current (4) fantasy armies quite well.

Ive always wanted to give Necromunda/Battle fleet gothic ago, but I would really want at least 1 other person to go in with me, and as I am coming back inot the hobby I have no 'friends' already playing

Re: What would it take to get you to play GW's other game?

I used to play with lizardmen, but stopped as I painted most of them when I was 12-14, when my painting skills were... not that great.
I did try to get started with warriors of chaos, but the fact that they have no options out side of combat and magic (and that Tzeentch sorcerers have no access to the rulebook lores) Meant I gave up, plus I wasn't sure what I'd be able to take in bigger games against all the monsters and such the other players in my group take. I thought about trying Tomb kings or High/dark elves, but the amount of models I would need to get to have a playable force (especially with tomb kings, I love the idea of a construct heavy force, but not that keen on the hoards of skeletons).
If I ever had the time/got the motviation to get through it, I'd strip my lizards and use them again, I had 2000pts of a saurus heavy army though, so stripping them would be a rather time consuming task.

A few years ago I started WFB (coming from 40k) and would have gladly go full-in were it not for time.

Unfortunately now... Yeah not going to happen. Prices are too high for me to consider doing multiple systems.

Re: What would it take to get you to play GW's other game?

My only interest is in a medieval universe and has been since I started Warhammer Fantasy back in the early 90's. Sci-fi is great... for movies. But for me to get into that type of game genre would take all of my friends to get an army plus one given to me. Futuristic Tanks, laser and automatic guns, bombs and motorized things just is a turn-off for me as I much prefer mostly close combat, primitive weaponry style battles. Heck, I'd probably consider even doing Napoleonic, War of the Roses, Ancients, or other similar games before I'd consider 40K. I don't even like playing any modern military console/pc games (Black ops, etc.) as it really isn't interesting nor fun for me to immerse myself in. I would also have to own all the current Fantasy armies as I like completion in a collection, which is only two main armies left with a slight interest in FW's Chaos Dwarfs.

Re: What would it take to get you to play GW's other game?

As others have said, they need to cut their price... A lot...

I also voted that they need to rewrite their rules. Completely. What little Games Workshop gaming I do is exclusively in 40K but, in truth, this goes for both systems. The rules are a bloody mess and it's very obvious that they are being rewritten just for the sake of rewriting them. And selling more stuff to the kids, of course...

Hmm? I've always enjoyed both, so play/collect both, along with other games. Really, it doesn't "take" much. Cool models, fun rules, good background, or a mix of all.
