And so it begins... Sureshot05's plog of everything.

I've finally decided to get a plog together after years of considering whether to or not. I have a condition that causes my hands to shake and I've been painting for twenty odd years as a method of coping with it. It is not severe as some, but it is always a pain when it happens! So, less of the sob story and on with the plog goodness (I hope). Before I start, I'd like to offer a toast to the many other ploggers in this and other forums who have over the last five years really inspired me with my painting and I hope this small tribute pays you back in kind.

I collect and paint the following armies in no particular order:

    Warhammer 40K.
    Chaos Marines*
    Chaos Daemons
    Ultramarines
    Imperial Guard
    Tyranids

    Warhammer Fantasy
    Night Goblins
    Empire
    Dwarves
    Chaos Daemons

    Epic
    Space Marines
    Imperial Guard
    Adeptus Titanicus
    Orks

    Battlefleet Gothic
    Imperial Fleet
    Chaos Fleet

*Two themes, Thousand sons (my first love) and Return to Terra, the combined horde that contains all the legions that will fight at the end of days.

And I am partial to a good model from any company when it ticks one of my happy boxes.

In addition, my family all paint with me and they will feature occasionally. My fiance paints Tomb Kings and Dark Eldar and my 8 year old daughter paints Lizardmen (of which I am very proud!).

I am also a scientist and have developed some very amusing spreadsheets which will be included in this plog for your general amusement.

Re: And so it begins... Sureshot05's plog of everything.

So I've become obsessed with painting everything that I own that is not painted! This started about 3 years ago when i finally catelogued everything that was unpainted in my collection and decided to do something about it! Since then I have had two rules:

    (1) The model per day count must remain above 0.2.
    (2) I can only buy a box of models for every two I paint.

However, the second rule does not include gifts! Which naturally side tracks me and ruins my attempts to stick to these rules. These were semi inspired by the Tale of ... painting logs which I find very inspiring and encouraging. So without avail, here is the first chart! Edit: I should be clear, this graph shows everything that is unpainted, there is about a 1000 more models that have been painted in the seven years prior, some of which has departed now. I recently realised my collection was at risk of hitting 2000 models in total, but that is for a later graph!

As you can see, the last few years I have made steady progress in the collection. It also only works on number of models, though cost and other factors have been collated into seperate details. As it stands I have the following statistics:
Percentage of models by cost painted: 51.72512119%
Percentage of models by in game points cost painted: 41.13924051%
Percentage of models by raw number painted: 35.8974359%

    And so it begins...

First up is my beloved Night Goblin army, this is a very long term project, which the final goal is a 1000 of the little buggers! However, it doesn't stop me adding other things to the army. As such I have converted a few units to join my Night Goblin horde.

For my first pictures, I thought I'd post up my latest production, my Night Goblin Arachnorak

I'm quite pleased with the spider and crew, and it took a lot of effort to get those eyes right!

As you can see, when it comes to giant spiders, I have always thought of Shelob in those tunnels and I think Spiders go naturally with both Forest and Night Goblins, hence I have a growing contingent of Spider riding Night Goblins.

The Arachnorak's pretty cool. I've always quite fancied a Night Goblin army. I'm not sure I could bring myself to paint the many hundreds of the little buggers needed to make a decent sized force though.

Good luck on getting stuff done. It takes a brave man to catalogue everything, and a brave man to get going with painting stuff. And you are off to a good start too!!

1 model down, 299 more to show us I too am a scientist and so I do appreciate a good graph! I also appreciate that arachnarok. You've done a great job on that model! I like the night goblin crew.

Re: And so it begins... Sureshot05's plog of everything.

@Starscream: This job was began way before I started the table. I have about 250 of the night goblins painted (that is for a later photo) and aim to get to a thousand. The new Night Goblins are a lot easier to paint than the older style (you can see I used one of those in the top nest).

@Daniel36: Ah, one of the may inspirations. Your minireports within the plog I may pinch as I've always thought it was a nice idea. Thanks for the welcome, the table is more an OCD thing I tend to think... Hope you like what else comes.

@HereBeDragons: And straight off another inspiration, and a chance to feel humble. Your Dark Eldar are outstanding, such that my fiancee is copying your style (I gave her the link). Hopefully they'll feature at a later date! It's good thing you pointed out the first mistake with my graph, it lists the last 3 years purchases and everything I had unpainted as of three years ago. I actually had about a 1000 painted other models on top of that, but they are so badly painted that I will just usher them into the background...

In true plog style, here is my current project with another simple conversion to make. This kit is possibly the second worse I have ever put together (the 5 Ed. (40k) horror's still come first!). The seat is a complete pain in the a**e and resculpting the night gobbo's cloak to dangle over the edge was very tough.

Just starting on the base coat stage, though I need to reundercoat the gobbo and seat black.

Also, a question to those who read this, do you think the GW spider is photoshopped? I struggled so hard to get this to fit on the base (lots of leg bending) and I am convinced that the one on the website is not actually mounted on the base but is photoshopped on and looks like it's floating.

I've had a look at the picture on the GW website and the best I can manage is that it's a bit hard to say. The spider has a slight floating above the base look to it, so it's certainly possible.

One of the worst models I've ever had to put together would be the Krootox and rider models. The fit was so bad I had to bend bits to fit, with a pair of pliers and green stuff a big gap that ran down the underside of the body on the Krootox.

I've got two and that put me right off them. That being said, it was a long time ago, so I suppose it's possible they fixed the mold.

Well now! That is flattering! If she wants any advice, ask away. I'm happy to help how I can! When I had a list of painted models (before I sadly lost it...) there were a goodly pile of models in my "have paint but need re-painting pile". Its always the way. Every time we improve it gets more tempting to think we should get older ones up to scratch.

@Starscream1138: I had heard things of the dreaded Krootox, think it came up a lot in the "worse models" thread a while back.

@HereBeDragons: Thanks you, when she next picks up the brush to do them, I'm sure she will.

So I've just finished a seperate project from my spiders and thats my latest addition to my guard army.

Highs of this were the plasma coils, the lows were inking the hull which went a bit wrong at the front. Also losing the search light piece is annoying though it must turn up eventually.

It does fit well with the rest of the army and i'm almost at fully legal for gaming.

those are some mean looking tanks! The first tank pic is rather startling... staring down the barrel of a humongous minigun is always unsettling!

Re: And so it begins... Sureshot05's plog of everything.

Thanks JT, I was quite happy with that first shot. I really wanted to get a glow effect on the interior of the plasma gun, but it just doesn't work due to the natural shadow.

Here is an older model finished two months ago as part of my Tyranid range. The photo is also an older one and it's been real tough to get a shot that does it justice.

My trygon! One of 4 units in my Tyranid army as it stands. But I love the model and this was a labor of love. It was also a real learning experience, forcing myself to improve my shading techniques to get smooth transitions. I've got a unit of screamers coming up and that is going to be blended from dark blue to light red. Personally I find blending the hardest thing to do. Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.

    You keep a chart?
That seems like a good way to lose one's sanity.

The Arachnarok is very nice, as is the Trygon. I especially like the colour transition on those chitinous plates on his head and back.

Re: And so it begins... Sureshot05's plog of everything.

@EmperorNorton: It creates a bit of OCD in me to keep painting, which is a good thing, but can also lead to a never ending feeling. Thanks for the kind words, the Trygon is a lovely kit and I really wanted to do it justice. Took a lot of work to get it to that state.

@ShelfUnit: Thanks, Epic will be coming up in the next month as I am going to paint up my next batch of Rhinos for my marines. I'll try and get some old photo's up soon as well.

So, I was away over the christmas period, visiting family, taking my little girls to see their grand parents and also engaging in lots of festive cheer! Trouble is that I couldn't take my paints with me so they all suffered a bit. However, I'm back, with some new models (thank you Santa!) and a large number of old models and some new old models (which I'll explain in a bit!).

So painted has restarted and I have now finished my Night goblin boss Lord Stabz!

The lighting has led to this looking darker than it should, but I am quite happy with him and he should be scuttling along with the main army in my next game (whenever that is...!). He's been a real pleasure to paint up after the nightmare of building and I'm quite pleased with the conversion and getting the Night goblin boss onto his throne.

Re: And so it begins... Sureshot05's plog of everything.

    Now for something different.

I'm a huge fan of 40K chaos and daemons in general. What I dislike is the bright "happy" colour schemes the various legions that have been fighting for 10,000 years or so (or a week in some cases!) have been given by GW. In particular, when it comes to my favourite legion, the Thousand sons, I feel that the paint style doesn't do justice to these ancient suits of armour, that walk quietly towards their foes, seemingly impervious to fire. As such, I redesigned the Thousand sons colour scheme to something I felt was more fitting, whilst keeping the egyptian theme.

As you can see, it's more dark, with an eerie green eye effect. I have two more squads of T'sons, but these are unpainted. One is metal and one was a finecast* christmas present. Both are on the to do list! I also recently finished a long term project which has been real joy for me to convert, design and paint and I think it shows in the painting. This squad has cost a lot and has been built, converted and added to over about two years. It involves bits from about 6 different kits,

    Behold Rubric Terminators

A darker shot of the Sorceror

After 10,000 years, these fallen warriors still seem sinister

As you can see, they have numerous converted and adjusted parts as well as a little resculpting. I had a lot of thought as to whether to add the Reaper Autocannon (notice the squad has no combi weapons, just doesn't fit the T'sons in my opinion) but decided that I would just for variety and if one of the T'sons was carrying the reaper at the time then it would have been Rubric'd as well. It's a happy way to start the year as these have been a very long project and I'm happy to see them done!

*Thankfully these were not a disaster. I generally despise finecash due to the cost and the poor quality material. I was given a Mangler for xmas 2011 which I had to exchange, and still didn't get a perfect one. It is now resculpted, assembled and now bloody wilting! I may paint it soon, but I think I'll need to add a steel rod to get it stay straight.

Re: And so it begins... Sureshot05's plog of everything.

One of my favourite stats that emerges from my database keeping is the number of models painted per day. I generally like to be at or above 0.25, or a model every 4 days!

But Christmas has caused me some serious grief here. Making it likely that I'll slip below my critical threshold of 0.25. Whilst the sons and spider have helped, I need to do some serious work on getting this number heading the opposite way. As such, I've started work on a Chaos Vindicator for my T'sons. I'm also looking into adding another squad to the painting desk, but have yet to decide which.

40K Armies: Chaos, Imperial Guard, Ultramarines, Chaos Daemons, Tyranids, Tau
Epic Armies: Imperial Guard, Ultramarines, Orks, Adeptus Titanicus.
    BFG Forces: Imperial Navy, Chaos.

Re: And so it begins... Sureshot05's plog of everything.

Great work on the thousand sons termis! Where did the head piece things come from? (I wont ask you to list all the components) Im not sure that they aren't a little too dark, though I think that is the photos more than the painting. You're model per day count is a cool idea, well done for keeping it at 0.25 for so long! I like seeing the charts so dont stop showing them
