    Homo Sapiens Rotundus

"You can run, but you'll only die tired."

Welcome to this little log of two separate Squat forces' growth from grey resin and plastic beginnings to converted and painted finish. The first force, my own Squat army (counts as Space Marines) will have a no-nonsense, professional military look. Based upon Mantic's Forgefathers, they'll all be extensively converted. A decorated GW Stormtalon will feature as an Iron Eagle Gyrocopter, whilst seven Ramshackle boring machines will play their part as Thermite drill APCs. Here's the first counts-as Devastator squad, armed with 2 Heavy Bolters, one Plasma Cannon and one Lascannon or Multimelta:

    "Incoming fire!"

The second part of the log will consist of the mercenary band of Squats I'm converting for my brother. Except for the weapons and one piece of 5th edition Dwarf body the space Dwarfs are sculpted. The aim is to capture the wacky Rogue Trader atmosphere, since it reminds us so much of Starcraft I. They might receive snow bases in the future.

The drunkard's left shoulder pad reads "DIE", the grenade launcherman's left shoulder plate have "KILL", whilst the sniper's have the text "HIT!" in the hope of good tabletop performance. The sharpshooter also have some kill count lines on his rifle and two skulls painted on the helmet.

    Comments and critiscism are welcome.

These look fantastic! Am I right in assuming you mean that the mercenaries are sculpted by you?

Any chance of some clearer photos of the Forgefathers?

Thank you very much! The mercenaries are indeed sculpted, and painted, by me as a gift to my brother. They'll probably be borrowed as detested, rough-hewn light infantry mercenaries (SM scouts) for my own army every now and then. Some quite rude biker guild gangs are also planned for the future.

We'll see if I can borrow a camera and take some new shots of the Forgefathers in the future. My old own one is poorer than the standard cellphone cameras nowadays, so there isn't much hope for clarity there.

Im not a huge fan of the forgefather sculpts, but you've done very well with them.

Now those mercenaries, that's what I like in a bearded stuntie!

The drunken one especially, awesome work :chrome:

Thank you! The drunkard might need a bit of highlight touch-ups for his flask. He's a versatile model which can be used both as miniature, wound counter, go-to-ground counter and pinned counter. Since he lies down it was for the most part dead easy to sculpt him around some plastic sprue bits and superglue-covered paperclips. At first his beard was a bit smaller and sculpted akin to the flowing Khazād Guard beards from Lotr, but my brother wanted a rag-tag drunkard with filthy facial hair.

As you can see the idea is that the drunkard was hit hard in the right arm and fell to the ground. He doesn't care about covering up his deep flesh wound in the arm, but is instead relieved to have caught the flask baseball-style with the immobilised arm. As such he doesn't roll around to bandage himself, but rather to carefully pick the beer flask out of his paralyzed right hand.

Also notice the six letters "X" on the label.

I most certainly did notice the brand of ale he had, a very nice touch :chrome:

    Thank you very much!

"The stronghold oldsters back at home might not have approved, but around these parts there aren't any stronghold or oldsters. Or home, for that matter. Chap, in the Biker 'guilds' you'll be your own man, with your own ride far away from safety and responsibilities. Us outriders have our own customs, so thus you'll have me with this spiky, radical beard style, see? At least I didn't tint it teal."

A two dimensional update this time. Just some Squat faces I painted whilst sick at home. How do you like it?

"Life is a trampler. I like to keep a rug of a beard around to better receive life as it is in the hallway."

"Pal, come now. Really? If you think I look weird now you should've seen me before the flamethrower accident."

Normally I'm rather indifferent to Squat logs, but you can see that they are near and dear to your heart, and it shows in the little details on the models and your drawings. Keep it up!

    Re: Homo Sapiens Rotundus

@Gargobot: Thanks! As for them being near and dear, both yes and no. Space Dwarfs aren't that close to my heart as fantasy Dwarfs, but anything bearded, short, drunk, stubborn and tough as nails is close to my heart in any case.

@Don't hold your breath or you'll faint! My project logs are long haulers with as slow movement speed as the armies they portray.

    @ThatAmigo: Thank you mate.

@Abaraxas: Thanks! That's the style I aimed for.

And you're right, I've been tinkering away at things. Was it that obvious? :chrome:

However, most of them have been Chaos Dwarfen rather than Squattish, but I can at least show you something space dwarfy which a friend of mine managed to shoot with his cellphone camera. It's just a WIP photo, but nevertheless:

    "Need a light?"

This fine gentleman will be lighting his cigarr with his flamethrower.

    Re: Homo Sapiens Rotundus

Thank you! I should've added you were entirely correct with me having tinkered away at stuff, mainly Squat vehicles, terrain, a flyer and counts-as Centurions (Mantic Big Mechas with ancestor faces).

It's all WIP and couldn't be photographed this time around. I'll probably be preoccupied by WHFB work for a tournament in May, but after that I'll try to return to the Space Dwarfs. With a vengeance.

Outstanding sculpts, there! You've got some real talent! I love the smirk on the marksman's face.

    Re: Homo Sapiens Rotundus

    Thank you a lot, folks!

I'll comply with your wish as far as I can with my limited camera access, Pekel. I'll be proccupied with WHFB in preparation for a tournament in May, but after that I'll return to Squats.

In the meanwhile here's a taste of the least WIP Squattish model. Or rather, terrain. Its name goes along the lines of "Mining operations network (MON) Omnibeacon" and I'll explain my thoughts about it once it's finally painted and photographed with something better than my backwards cellphone.

It is entirely built out of plastic caps, plasticard, some "pins" of various shaped, small nails, super glue and a little greenstuff. It was a Christmas scratchbuild. Of course, like an iceberg it's supposed to be 9/10 under ground, since it's a Space Dwarf construction.
