    Crusade

I have now taken the plunge to start to collect Crusades in 28mm.
The plan was to try to reuse one or two of my African tribal unit as a sort of mercenary light skirmishing unit for an Egyptian fraction. And the Medieval Swedes I painted previously is planned to be recycled into a western force.
Its great to be able to use one miniature for lots of different settings.

But my first new and dedicated unit for this project is this small unit of Saracen light infantry.

Ive used leftover parts from the Perrys plastic box Mahdist Ansar. The miniatures with most clothing or Arabic headgear and so on that I didnt think matched what I was after in the Tribal Africa project.

Ithink they will do for starting up this project.

I think they maybe look a little more like Barbary corsairs then Saracen infantry but I think its close enough and its hard to argue with the price of plastics especially considering I got these from the leftovers.

    Thanks Durfast

I just finished this small Latin/Frankish infantry group.
They are intended to be used as a small group of mixed medium infantry and act as opponents for my coming Saracen force.
I added some other makers and bits but its mostly bits from Fireforge games. These are my first Fireforge games miniatures and I must say I like them.

Cool stuff, I especially like the bases and the blue/white scheme of the Crusaders! I wonder if the Saracens if making the sand on the Saracen's bases a bit more yellowish would improve them further?

BTW what does it say on the banner?

    Thanks.

About the banner, I really have no idea. It was found in the box of Perrys Plastic Ansar uprising but I thought it looked good.
I will test the more yellow approach on a base or two. Really thanks for the idea.

    Some new miniatures just based.

These two are converted Gripping Beast plastic "Dark age warriors"
I wanted to test how they would turn out, I imagined it could be done.

They look great! When I started my Andalusian project this set wasn't out yet; if it had been I would have been doing the same thing.

    Big thanks

I think the conversions is promising, with some more experience they will look great.

I found these at a sale and thought they could fit into this project.

This is something more people should do... Army pictures.

Here are my small but growing force of Saracens with some African skirmishers recruited from my Tribal Africa project. http://www.warseer.com/forums/showth...-tribal-africa

Starting with from the left side I got a small unit of archers and some light infantry, I got two small unit of African skirmishers.
The Commander of this small force is accompanied by a drummer and two bodyguards (two spare infantry miniatures).
Then I got two other unit of African skirmishers lead by a commander from the same tribe.
Under them is a small unit of medium infantry and a small unit of Turcomen horse archers.

    Re: Crusade, Saracen infantry

If you want to go for a more historical angle on your banners the traditional Muslim battle banner was simply a plain black flag, sometimes they would be inscribed with Cartograms, usually quotes from the Quaran or some of the Names of God related to warfare.

Cartograms are really hard to paint however.

Big thanks Cypher, I need all the help and tips I can get. Its the best way of improving your armies or miniatures.

I used that flag just out of sheer laziness, it was in the box with the miniatures. Its a couple of hundred years later then what I intend to game mine with though...

Yesterday I brought my miniatures to the club and press-ganged a friend to throw some dices in an Crusader game of Hail Caesar.

We played with small units instead of standard sized ones. We just gamed with what was available.

Im sure the gaming balance with close combat and ranged combat as well as the balance with unit types is somewhat altered with just using small units but it works.

The battle report can be found here http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/...le-report.html

Some of the pictures from the game.

Im sure we did all kinds of things wrong, both tactically and rule wise but it was a really fun game non the less.

    Thanks Killshot.

The miniatures are from Gripping Beast, they use the same horses as Musketeers apparently.

I think these days Gripping Beast are more or less the only way to get any Musketeer minis.

Anyway, great battle report, I really like the terrain and the colourful troops. Great to hear you could force your friend to play Hail Caesar. Hope the game cought on!
