Accompanying filler pieces, some partially cobbled, some not

The "empty squares" above are used to give some additional space between the buildings when constructing the map. Without them, the buildings would sometimes be a bit too tight-packed.

Meanwhile, I'm still working with a smaller but rather detailed house that is to come the half-crumbled library of Mordheim. I'm happy to introduce it next, once it's sufficiently painted.

Re: Self-made modular board (Mordheim, Hero Quest...)

Alrighty, this is the house I've been working with for quite a while. Outside, it's a pretty regular ruined Mordheim house, colored red this time to give it some flavour in my otherwise quite brown town. Inside, it reveals about half of the ruined library of Mordheim, including several big shelves of books and scrolls, saved from the destruction. And yeah, it was quite a pain building all that paperwork. It's about 120 separate books and scrolls.

It's "only" two stores in height, but the first floor is quite high to give room to the bookshelves. Pictures are from the unfinished version. Ground is actually brown, and there are long ladders to be added, which will lead to the attic.

Various details, in brickwork and some bits from Empire Flagellants and some skaven boxes. Bells, above the door and hanging from the roof. A rat running over one bookshelf, discarded papers, a hanging noteboard, and other stuff.

Quite happy with this one, even more so than the six-floor building.

Congratulations for this building. Is awsome. I wish I could play Mordheim on this table.

I would like to make sugestions but I can't imagine how to improve it. All the details are so complete... Maybe just dropping down some books over the flor to represent them falling when the building was destroyed. To add a bit of disorder.

I love your work. Just waiting for more.

Very nice. How much of the building do you plan out in advance and how much do you go by inspiration in the moment?

Re: Self-made modular board (Mordheim, Hero Quest...)

    Thanks, guys!

@kazan: Of the issue of fallen books and other mayhem: I thought about that, but decided against it, wanting to save the tight-as-it-is space inside the house. As the backstory I thought that there is probably a surviving librarian or some wandering monk who has organized the remnants of the library again, returning books to the shelves, cleaning the floor of the worst rubble, adding in the gong and the bells, and so on.

@Avian: I usually have pretty good idea of what I'm doing, but may change parts on the way. For example, I first though to make a balcony to this building, but decided against it, while I was cutting the walls. It just didn't seem to fit. Little details like bells, rats, hanging signs and such I don't plan, but just add when I think that some spot looks dull and empty.

And of course, sometimes planning goes awry. I had planned a pool of water leak over the shelf, under the hole in the roof. But then I noticed I had already glued the papers and scrolls to the spot...

So... some planning, lots of improvising.

Here you have some more accompanying pieces, made from leftovers of Witchfate Tor and the Garden of Morr: a ruined tower, and an improvised graveyard.

I've made quick progress with this project. In about a couple months, I have a small Mordheim block at the ready. Can add some more buildings, but it's already playable as it is.

Making some wooden ramps, assault bridges and ladders next, so this set gains a bit more three-dimensional utility.

It's coming together very nicely. Could we get an overview pic as well?

Re: Self-made modular board (Mordheim, Hero Quest...)

@Avian: Sure thing. I hope this post gives you enough an overview!

@kazan: Thanks! I did indeed build it with ranged combat and line-of-sight in mind. It is a rather "full" map, with plenty of obstacles and covers. I'd imagine gaining the high ground becomes very essential in these games. In our test game, the melee-based skaven were dominating the city floor, but ultimately got feathered, when the wood elves gained a high firing position.

Like asked, here is some overview of the already introduced five main pieces and some accompanying ones. It's a 3x4 square map (45x60 cm), a small Mordheim block. It doesn't use nearly all of my accompanying pieces (like cobbled roads and empty squares) but it gives you a good overview of the buildings themselves.

With most of the needed buildings done (I'll surely make some more, never fear!) I've been painting some minis to go with the settings. So, even though this is a terrain thread, I introduce a few template warbands as well.

Here are the Keepers of the Library. Witch hunters, Brothers of Sigmar, or what have you. Scholars, monks, fanatics -- and crazy to boot -- who've taken up arms to protect what remains of the library's collection.

Another small warband, basic mercs. Captain with a brace of pistols, youngblood with one and a mace (torch), sergeant being an ex-knight, wearing heavy armor, helmet and a two-hander, plus three marksmen with crossbows. Not the most effective combination, but what the hell!

Just like the miniature/terrain pics out of the Mordheim rulebook! Would love to have a game of Mordheim with that terrain.

    That's the aim at least!

    Here's some Empire-themed guys:

Three marksmen with blunderbusses, captain (in the middle) and two differend champions. The right-side one is actually a war priest of Sigmar, and goes with the Witch Hunter warband as well.

Some variety to the humans: a wood elf warband! Three archers, woodland spirit, and two heroes with spears converted from flag poles and some blades, making a naginata and an asrai bladestaff.

Afterwards, I figured that an autumn-themed band would probably fitted better to this city. I might make a second batch with a different color scheme.

The idea of this tower building was to be the remnants of The Fighters' Guild. The shield above the door, and the weapon rack at the wall try to signify this background. It has some random bits from GW boxes, and the balconies at the side are from Deathknell Watch.

Re: Self-made modular board (Mordheim, Hero Quest...)

I finally got painted another monstrosity that has been sitting as a slowly progressing work in my bench for weeks and weeks. This is the "World's End Tavern", an inn at the borders of Mordheim, rebuilt and defended by its current tavern keeper and a band of mercenaries. It will have its own campaign rules that involve its use as a part of a Mordheim campaign.

It is my biggest building so far, and most time-consuming. Not the least because its walls and roofs are pretty much all intact.

I'll add some indoors pictures from the floors later.
