Enter the Drakwald - thread for sign-up and OOC

You are in the town of Mittleweg, which lies on the forest road between Altdorf and Middenheim. You arrived here for your own reasons, perhaps you are seeking local employment or perhaps you are merely a traveller passing though while exploring The Empire. On arrival you noticed that the gate-guards seemed edgy. On reaching the local tavern you heard gossip that there had been a spate of recent attacks on travellers using the roads near the town and that no-one knows who is responsible.

It is mid-afternoon and you are settled in the common room of the tavern eating a meal, surrounded by a handful of locals and other travellers. At that point the tavern door swings open and in walks a burly man who is latter middle-aged with greying hair. He also carries an axe at his waist. Beside him is a younger man perhaps half his age. The older man surveys the room and then speaks, raising his gruff voice so everyone will hear: "For those who don't know me my name is Kasper and I'm the captain of the local militia. As many of you will be aware there has been a spate of recent attacks upon the roads. The last victims were a pair of our own road-wardens. What we need is a posse of brave warriors to investigate these killings and put at stop to them. The town magistrate offers a prize of 40 gold crowns to any group that brings the perpetrators to justice." He glances round once more at the assembled throng. "Do we have any volunteers?"

Hi all. This is the sign up thread for a play-by-post roleplay based on a story written by myself.

    How it will work:

As a player you will be expected to try and post at least once every 2 days, ie. within 2 days of a Gamesmaster update. In minimal terms this could simply be a short paragraph to say what action your character is taking next. But obviously the more effort and detail you put into your character-updates then the hopefully the more reward you and others will get out of it.

Play by post is a different medium to table-top roleplay and for that reason I will be using a very simplified set of rules based on the statlines in WFB. In terms of power-level your character will be roughly equivalent to a unit champion, depending of course on choice of profession. Allowed races are human, elf, dwarf, Halfling.

Note that this game is likely to run for at least 4 months, so if in 3 weeks time you are leaving home on a 6-month round the world trip then signing up would not be appropriate.

To register an interest please fill out the character sheet below:

    Name:
    Race:

    Profession:
Equipment: You may start with 1-2 weapons, plus shield/buckler and armour if appropriate. You also have a pouch of coins, your travelling gear such as bedroll and water-flask, plus other minor personal effects you wish to carry.
    Physical Description:
    Background:

Absences during the game: If anyone is going to be away/unavailable-to-post for several days or longer please let me know beforehand.

    Registered characters: (player in brackets)

Jerek Kruger - Human Witch-hunter (Slayer)
Cilaren - Elf Mercenary (Warrior of Naggaroth)
Schneider von Reik - Human Engineer (Calgar)
Elrich Von Oerlikon - Human Roadwarden (2-heads)
Melgar Ravenfriend - Halfling Amythyst Wizard(Spifflespore)

    EDIT: SIGNUPS NOW CLOSED

    Name: Jerek Kruger
    Race: Human
    Profession: Witch-hunter
Equipment: Rifle, one handed weapon, leather armour, a few crowns enough to get him to the next job. Tokens of Ulric, Sigmar and Morr, and a special locket.
Physical description: Jerek's hair is a dark cooper orange colour kept in a single knot, to keep his hair out of his face during a fight. His face is covered in a thick dark copper beard. With eyes that are dark blue Jerek does not fit in well with most other citizens of the Empire. Jerke's body has several different scars on his body from his many encounters with the servants of chaos. These scars and hair mixed with his size make him a fearsome man to look at, for he is no small man he stands at 6'6".
Background: Jerek was born and raised in the city of Middenheim, then at a young age he left the city with his wife and moved to a small town still within Middenland , allowing them to start a simple life of a farmer. A few years later the city attacked and destroyed in a raid by a horde of beastmen. Jerek was away in Middenheim selling produce when the attack happened. When he returned to find his home burning and his wife's body mutilated. He swear to hunt down every creature of chaos and kill them. It has been three years since these gruesome events. Jerek has hunted dozens of different monsters, including rogue wizards, mutants, secret cults and beastmen. He still continues on the quest to pure the world of these abominations. Jerek live for Job to job never taking a break always pushing forward.

    Name: Cilaren
    Race: Elf
Proffession: Mercenary, merchant guard (see below)
Equipment: Elven bow and quiver with common arrows, elven sword in a scabbard, a sligtly notched kite shield depicting a green sea dragon rising out of the ocean towards the sun, light elven scalemail (without the helmet) over white but now slightly dirty elven sailors clothes. Cilaren also has a weathered grey cloak with a hood and a small money purse with what he earned from previous jobs.
Physical description: Cilaren is about average size, standing at 5'7, but slightly less broad between the shoulders than a common man/elf, which combined with his long hair and lack of facial hair sometimes make humans mistake him for a woman. Cilaren has long light-blonde hair reaching just below his shoulders, and his eyes are the blue-green colour of the sea.
Background: Cilaren was born and raised in a fishing village at the coast of Yvresse, where he learned the ways of a sailor at early age. He also enjoyed hunting in the forest and was the village's best archer before he was three decades old. When he was about thirty, he travelled to Lothern in order to seek fortune. Cilarens skill as sailor and archer ensured him a job as a guard on one of the merchant ships. There he served for about two decades, honing his skills with the bow and learning to use the sword aswell, for the ship went from Lothern to Bretonnia, and from The Empire to Tilea and was often attacked by pirates. Once, not far from Marienburg, the pirates got the upperhand, and the ship was taken. Cilaren alone (to his knowledge) escaped in one of the lifeboats and reached the coast alive. After that he has travelled the old world as a mercenary, taking jobs as a carvan guard whenever he can or helping locals as he can to earn a few extra crowns. The reason Cilaren does not want to return to ulthuan is that he is ashamed of fleeing the ship where his captain and crewmates fought and died, and he wishes to redeem himself somehow before returning to his homeland.

    Name: Schneider von Reik
    Race:
    Human
    Profession: Engineer
Equipment: Repeater pistol, knife, dented light upper cuirass, leather hat, monocle, crude leather workbelt, heavily sooth-stained black/yellow standard imperial "fluffy arm" outfitt. Leather rugsack with a bedroll ontop, several odd looking bits on his belt.
Physical Description: About average size for an imperial male, short blonde hair with pathes that's been discolored and charred. Sports a long grey beard and a mustache that's been elaboratly shaped in popular imperial fashon.
Has a non-caring looking face stained with sooth with a clear patch around his right eye where his monocle usually is. Has significal hearing loss on his right ear.
Background: Schneider was born and raised in Wissenburg and was kown around town at an early age for being very clever and capable of building anything out of anything. As a young man he applied to the College of Nuln at which he later underwent training as an artilleryman. It was during the battle of Stahlbach that he earned his rank as engineer when his rambling about parabolic trajectories payed off and he and his crew managed to bring down a rat ogre at a range that was previously thought impossible for a Great Cannon.
His uppstart career as an engineer was cut short when he and a fellow engineer experimented on a new mix of unstable liquid suddenly exploded, killing his collegue but sending Schneider flying through the chimney. His punishment for being "too smart" was reassignment as an ambassador of Nuln to the remote coastal forts on the northern coastline which requires alot of travelling by foot back and forth from Nuln...which he hates.

    SKILLS:

    Perception +
    Swim

    TALENTS

    Acute Hearing
    Keen Senses
    Natural Weapons
    Strike Mighty Blow

    Background:

    1. Where are you from?

    Nuln Wissenland

    2. What is your family like? - Brothers/sister, place in the family, mother/father, alive/dead?

My father was a master engineer specialising in irrigation/flood prevention. He travels around Wissenland a lot working on Farm irrigation projects (hence Elrich’s love of the open countryside coming from travelling with his father).

My mother was the oldest daughter of a local magistrate, she is now deceased.

    I have 4 Brothers and 2 Sisters:

Elrich (me) is the second child, my sister Brunhilda Von Oerlikon (Burgher's wife) being the oldest. Others in order of age are:

Carl Von Oerlikon (Priest of Sigmar)
    Beomund Von Oerlikon (Artillery journeyman)
Tancred Von Oerlikon (Journeyman stone mason working towards engineering guild membership)
    Seigfreind Von Oerlikon (Road warden)
    Angelica Von Oerlikon (Burgher's wife)

    3. What is your social class?

Upper middle/tradesman, I have fallen a peg or two

    4. What did you do before you became an adventurer?

    I was an Artisan apprentice

    5. Why did you become an adventurer?

A fellow apprentice acted extremely improperly towards one of my sisters (read: he tried to rape her) and my subsequent confrontation with him did not end well for him. He just happened to be related to several other Guild masters in Nuln, however.

My maternal Grandfather got me a commission as a road warden to get me out of Nuln’s vengeful families and to avoid any political issues for the rest of the family

    6. How religious are you?

Very, when on patrol I would tend to take particular care to keep watch over any shrines to Sigmar, Taal and Rhya

    7. Who are your best friends and worst enemies?

I have no real best friends, I abandoned pretty much everything when I left Nuln. My closest friends would be my youngest Brother and sister, Seigfreind and Angelica, and possibly my maternal Grandfather.
Worst Enemies would include the individual I disgraced and assaulted, one Whilhelm Von Kraus, and the entire Von Kraus "clan"

    8. What are your prized possessions? (Does not need to be items of monetary value)

A cavalry sword passed down from my great-great-grandfather, or my pistol plus a locket from the love I left behind.

    9. Who are you loyal to?

The Emperor, Sigmar, THE LAW and the common people

    10. Who do you love/hate?

Still sappily pining over the fair haired childhood sweetheart I had to leave behind in Nuln but possibly interested in a Chain mail clad Kislevite agent/merc/assassin I have come across during my investigations. As for hate, well pretty much the entire upper echelons of the Nuln guilds plus anyone with even a hint of corruption about them or who would abuse their power over others.

@2-Heads: Thankyou for the prompt response. However you won't need all those stats and skills. As explained on the opening post I will be running this with my own rule-set. The rest of your stuff, equipment, background etc. is fine.

To the rest of you: 4 players seems an adequate number so if everyone is happy I will start up the game thread tommorow (sunday).

*For convenience I will also add a chartacter-list to the opening post above.

@slayer: please note that your profession is spelt 'witch-hunter' not which-hunter Also what is the nature of your hand-weapon? I am guessing a sword?

That's fine, he was an old character I created once upon a time so I just added it all for a sense of completeness. I'd rather leave it than need to edit it all but if they aren't needed then that's fine

Re: Enter the Drakwald - thread for sign-up and OOC

@ Craze_Boi Hey, totally missed the bit where you stated "4 players should be good" or similar. Anyway, I'm down if there is room. Figured you had no magic.

    Name: Melgar Ravenfriend

    Race: Halfling

    Profession: Hedge Wizard (journeymen)

Equipment: Knobby Staff (W#1), Brass Sickle (W#2), Black Robes (hooded, heavily soiled, louse infested), braided rope (3'5", doubles as belt), oiled leather drawstring pouch (small) containing rare spell components, woven straw basket (corded for use as a backpack) containing a basic kettle, squirrel jerky (x4 medium sized chunks), whole garlic (x2), redskin potatoes (x4), large wooden spoon, wooden bowl, basic cook's knife, small lump of smelted silver, a crinkled vellum sheet (seemingly penned in gibberish, with exquisitely illustrated borders), quill, brass ink pot with cork, several squares of scrap linen and a lucky goat head (embalmed... poorly) for the occasional use as a ceremonial headdress.

Physical Description: Melgar has thin shortly cropped black hair that is bare on top (monk's cap) revealing a wart stricken crown and wispy black hair topping his feet. His prominent beak-like nose appears to have been broken at one point and rest crooked upon his face. He has deeply set ice-blue eyes and thin, strangely groomed eyebrows. He seems to have the burden of years beyond his age weighing him down, though not yet middle-aged his deliberate, measured stride and droopy expression betrays the toll of his studies. His skin is a sickening paper white and thankfully little of it is exposed from beneath a heavily layered robe. He stands at a diminutive 3'6", the pointed hood of his robe adds about 1'. His thick sausage-like digits are tipped by grimy claw-like nails and he bares a formidable row of teeth that have been filed down to sharp points. Sporting a flabby gut, Melgar exhibits the portliness typical of all Halflings but disproportionately paired with thin, spindly legs. The condition of his robes are such that he is expunged in a foul odor like that of a wet, rotting dog carcass.

Background: Melgar's ancestral roots can be traced to a clan of long standing in the village of Bogglewort in the northern Mootlands. Ravenfriends have a reputation of being dour, stick-in-the-mud sorts and often seek out work as tallymasters and scribes. Several have even been chosen as Elder in the past, as shrewd and humorless types manage communities neatly, it seems. Melgar, the eldest son, was set on a path from birth to continue his father's work. Once of reasonable age he began documenting the meat pie exchange rates, beet harvest yields and cabbage worm life cycle findings in line with his duties as an apprentice to the Master of Ledgers for the Elder. While the opportunity to work so near the Elder was a great honor and maintained a proud Ravenfriend tradition, Melgar considered this type of dreary, unimaginative bookkeeping to be dull and trivial. So, one night he simply walked the Old Dwarf Road and in short order crossed into Stirland, never to be seen in the Moot again. After six years time spent as a somewhat successful huckster of "genuine Mootfolk remedies and tonics" in between odd work drafting letters for illiterate longshoremen and such, he managed to secure work on a supply barge tailing the Wurtbad Militia as they were summoned to the capital.

Life in grand Altdorf was unsettling for him, accustomed now to the sleepy affairs of backwater Stirland villages. Determined to find refuge after a particularly weary day in Old Altdorf scuttling underfoot as Big Folk trounced along on their errands, Melgar wandered through a crack into a walled courtyard. There he found a nicely concealed spot for bedding down within a tangled briar of black roses.

He was roused awake by a tall and slender specter in flowing black robes, illuminated beneath the menacing glow of a full green moon. The man angrily prodded the halfling with the tip of his scythe, he harried Melgar out of the rose bushes and continued to shoo him from the grounds. The halfling, fed up with these Big Folk and their pretentious belief that halflings had less stake in the world than they, took action "I'm a Ravenfriend of Bogglewort mind you! I'll sleep where I damned well like!" he stamped on the man's silk slippered feet and in return, was clocked with the flat side of a scythe's blade. He reeled backward, caught himself and dove fist-first sending a swift uppercut into the man's groin. Caught off guard, the man fumbled his scythe and the contents of his off-hand, a massive iron-bound tome, onto the dirt as he clutched his wounded manhood. The heavy manuscript fell to the ground, jostling its ornately wrought clasp which popped open revealing the faintly glowing script upon the pages within.

What happened next is that which Melgar cites as the moment his destiny was revealed. Loose from their sturdy metal enclosure, pages of the tome flitted skyward into the chill, moonlit air. Casting a cautious eye to the recovering wizard, he caught up one of the pages snagged by the rose bushes and darted off into the night. Melgar studied the page soon thereafter, curious if it was worth anything. Though relatively well tutored as he was and from a family highly steeped in written verse, Melgar couldn't identify the primitive, jagged characters upon the page. Strangely, the words seemed to lurch with impossible movement, skittering around like insects upon the crinkled, ancient vellum.

Within the year, Melgar sat within the hut of Black Willow, a crone he sought out in the remote Barren Hills. He never knew words... mere writing could contain, never-mind express such terrible truths... noxious, vile things which crawled and slithered beyond the veil of reality... his hunger for the whispered words that ride upon the winds of Shysh has never ceased. Striking a pact with Black Willow, he took his first tentative steps into manipulating raw, wild magic. That was three years ago.

"Do you reckon me for something strange, boy? A Wizard, maybe?" Melgar once whispered to a curious youth that stood and stared, like a thing frozen, as the halfling passed along a quiet country road. "Why? Do you imagine I'd be welcome amongst skinny men who seclude themselves to high, drafty towers? Do I look like such a wretch that I'll kowtow to an ignorant, fearful peasantry which I serve in the interest of?" ...the lad bore a pinched expression like a babe nearly set to wailing. Then, a burly woodsmen, evidenced by a double-headed axe, strutted up alongside the boy. Melgar quickly produced a small, gilded flask "... so I tell you, son. Nothing preserves the keen edge of an axe better than concentrated tincture of beaver musk. Can you guess how many of the critters it takes to prepare even this much?" The boy shrugged. "Nineteen! Thats right. O, what gift possesses the beaver that he can down three trees by nightfall? Impressive for a rodent, you'd say! The powers in the musk, my boy!"

Re: Enter the Drakwald - thread for sign-up and OOC

Hi Spifflespore. I originally said 2-6, so 5 players is fine. One thing though. As a mere apprentice you will be a bit underpowered compared to the others. If you want to play the rookie that's fine, but if not you may wish to upgrade him to a wizard who's had a bit more training. ie. something like a journeyman wizard if you are familiar with WFRP. Let me know your preference.

Note also wizards in the Empire have to be registered to the colleges of magic and wear the badge of that order. So if you wish to play a wizard who is self-taught, ie. a hedge wizard, that is a fact your character will need to keep hidden.

To everyone else signups are now closed. Cheers.

Re: Enter the Drakwald - thread for sign-up and OOC

Hi all, just to clarify where we are at. I'm just waiting for Spifflespore to finalize/confirm his details. Once that is done we should be ready to go.

Well in a nutshell any common people who discovered he was a hedge wizard would try and burn him or stab him with pitch-forks. So either he would have to hide his magic, or pretend that he belongs to an official wizard order.

The game thread is up by the way, so feel free to start posting.
