28mm Modern Urban Adventures in Carnage

This is the companion log to my 28mm Modern Cityscape project log over in the terrain section.

This is a project I started in 2004 after buying some SWAT team and Criminal gang miniatures from Britannia Miniatures way back when I used to work a few miles from their shop. These miniatures look horribly dated now (and they didn't look remotely state of the art back then) but they are what kicked the whole project off in the first place.

Ten years ago I splashed some paint on them, wrote a rules set, made some basic scenery and played a few (fun) games before putting everything back in a box and (mostly) forgetting about it all. Now I've made a serious start on building a cityscape it was time to revisit the miniatures side of things.

As these were all started in 2004 all I've had to do is some tidying, shading and highlighting. I couldn't be botheres with stripping everything and starting again so I have been stuck with my original colour scheme choices. At some point I will work on improving the bases when I decide if facing is going to be a factor in the rules set (currently it isn't).

So here are my completed original miniatures:-

Now that lot is out of the way it is time to paint up some of my new purchases for the project. These are some lovely TAG SWAT snipers. The proportions and detail are so much nicer than the 2004 miniatures.

We've had a great time using some of these for the playtest of the updated rules. I'm now painting up some more elements for the game to add some more forces and broaden the scope of the game scenarios.

Re: 28mm Modern Urban Adventures in Carnage

When the agents show up in Carnage its either because something very bad has happened or because something very bad is about to happen. Those who work with them are never sure if they share the same aims or if their current goals have merely coincided for a while. They are always coy with their sources of information which leads to the question - exactly which agency are they working for?

The miniatures are mostly EM4 with a couple of Chinatown enforcers thrown in for good measure.

Interesting project: minis, terrain and a rule set. You don't often see that.

This is my most ambitious project to date but so far it is going really well. The play test games have been a lot of fun - hopefully I will have the rules in a state to share with people before too long.

Some dreadful photos of my recent painting efforts. These are much nicer than the photos would suggest (honest).
    Carnage PD in action:-

These are a mix of West Wind cops and a couple of Hasslefree minis.

Some reinforcements for the agents. The body armour and assault rifles will made a big difference.

These are all from West Wind.

Re: 28mm Modern Urban Adventures in Carnage

And here is the final faction for the game - a group of former Russian private military contractors who are exploring other wealth generating activities within Carnage. After years spend in war zones and other hazardous areas I guess they felt right at home down town.

These are from The Assault Group's Russian Mafia range. It was a bit odd looking up from my painting desk and seeing these guys on the news with the crisis in Ukraine. Watching the news made me realise that I'd painted the AK74s and AKSU74s incorrectly so I had to go back and re-do them (and yes I did mean AK74 and not AK47 - I've learned more about firearms doing this project than I ever knew before).

Now I only have a few character miniatures left to complete for this phase of the project and I'm done. Of course I still have buildings to complete as well but overall I think I'm making good progress.

They look nice. Good variety in cloth colour. My eyes must be fooling me, because I still read "Urban Adventures in Carthage."

And here is one of the characters. Officer Murphy is not part of the normal Officer Down campaign and instead comes under the 'specials' section. I plan to do a series of these featuring scenarios based on films, TV and or comic books.

City authorities in your area have reported that the bodies of the dead are rising from their graves and attacking the living.
Things seem to have taken a dark turn in Carnage and the citizens have begun arming themselves with whatever they can lay their hands on.

These are for "... and stay down!" - the sister rules set to "Officer Down!" which covers modern horror.

Keep watching ... the zombies are coming.

And the first batch have arrived.

And there are plenty more where they came from.

And just for a laugh ...

And that's the zombies finished, phew. That was a long hard slog but I now have all 66 complete and ready for play.

Back to painting the living now for a nice change.

Dang, that's almost twice as many as I got painted.

Got any specific rules in mind?

I'm writing my own rules again. I am running it as a Haloween special game for some friends. I'm mixing elements of co-op board games in with tabletop gaming. There is some potential but it needs a lot of fine tuning to get the balance right.

    Good stuff.

Have you ever read Akula's rules? Sounds like something that might fit the bill or for taking some inspiration from.

Yes I have - I remember following Akula's zombie project a few years ago - makes my effort look very small.

That link doesn't seem to work but I think I have a copy saved somewhere.

The swarms in AR did influence my design a bit. I don't think I have copied anything directly from anywhere but many things have given me inspiration.

And now we're back on some more conventional miniatures. These are all from Hasslefree and some may seem a little familiar. Most of these will be useful for both "Officer Down" and "And Stay Down".

Re: 28mm Modern Urban Adventures in Carnage

And one final push takes me over the line. I have now painted up every last miniature I have purchased for my Officer Down project. That means the project is complete at last ... until I succumb to temptation and buy some more miniatures.

Here we have three Britannia Miniatures Somalis and a Russian officer from TAG. The TAG miniature was a freebie when I placed an order with them earlier in the year (they are nice like that). The Somalis date back to the origins of the project in 2004(ish) - I bought them to add some more assault rifles to the criminal gangs but they don't really fit. I'm not sure what I'll do with them but they are painted at least.

I still have some more miniatures to work on for "And Stay Down" (Who you gonna call?) which I will get round to some point.

Very nice. It's especially cool to see all these lovely Hasslefree minis lined up. Just today I ordered me a HF mini.

Amazing, you started this proejct 10-ish years ago?
