Awakening Of The Woods... an old metal Wood Elf army

Hello everyone. Thanks for visiting, I'll get the biscuits out.

This project is part-build, part-restoration. My roots were in a 4th Edition Wood Elf army, before branching out into other races. With the release of the new army book, I had to bough down to the pressure and start collecting again.

That's the end of the tree puns. Please don't leaf.

So I currently have half an Asrai army, mostly 4th Edition metals, with a few random models in the leadpile. And as you'll see from my Greenskin project, I sometimes mix up old metals and new plastics, so I'll be getting myself some new kits too.

(And as you'll also see from the Greenskin thread, I paint slow - so get comfortable ).

Let's begin with a classic: the legendary Regiment of Renown: Skarloc's Wood Elf Archers!

Beginning with the elf himself: Skarloc.

And this is Araflane Warskald (even the musicians had names) with his enormous Carnyx.

Unfortunately four of the same models ... but they help to fill out a back rank.

The autumnal theme just seemed to happen with this unit. I don't think I'll be using it anywhere else, so this army may look quite eclectic (a 'Four Seasons' army )

    Continuing with the Glade Guard...

This one is so old, he has one of those round shield-nubs (I couldn't bear to cut it away)

I painted everything beneath the shield anyway (A wasted effort. After all, who would know? I would, I would know)

This guy isn't part of Skarloc's regiment, but he found his way in.

Meet 'Malmir the Elf' from the 'Shadows Over Bogenhafen' set. Not many Asrai have facial hair, but I think his sideburns look quite Elvish.

He's not even the unit musician. He just brought the lute for jamming around the campfire.

I'm not a great fan of Empire Records, but I appear to have painted him like Rex Manning.

Finally, I thought a standard bearer would look good (even if I never use it). This was originally a 4th Edition Glade Guard (back when 'Glade Guard' meant 'Spears') with his spear converted into a banner.

First unit done! All comments welcome.

Looking great! What the old sculpts lack in technical ability, they definitely make up for in character. Great use of the Dark Elf sideways-banner.

Classic sculpts rule! As does the painting and basing here. I am looking forward to seeing more of this.

    Good Luck!

Thanks @Ramius4 - I think the new plastic Wood Elves are some of the best in the range, but I've found a certain charm in the old sculpts.

@Cuchulain84 Thanks - it will be a mixed bag of miniatures. I've got a few thousand points to start with.

Thanks @The Yak - the basing used to be simple green flock. I've replaced it with a new type of 'forest debris', which I quite like (assuming it stays on!)
... and I have to admit, I'm lichen the puns.

    @Ramius4 Oak-ay, no more puns.

Next up is Wardancers. These are some older paint jobs, given a bit of a dust-off and some new bases.

The Warhammer Quest model is still my favourite wardancer.

Two converted command models from the Scouts (I'm sure there was an edition where Wardancers were allowed to take standards).

Once I'd clipped off the bow and quiver, the standard bearer lost his centre of gravity and kept falling over, so I sculpted a little tree stump for him to stand on heroically, and that seemed to do the trick.

I went with darker colours for this unit - black hair, black blades - as I wanted them to seem more menacing than the regular Asrai.

An even earlier model for the musician - I liked the harp, and his clothes were a close enough match.

I found a couple more wardancers, so experimented with head swaps and twisting the swords. I wish I'd done more twisting of the weapons, as it worked out well.

A 6th Edition Wardancer character that sneaked in here (this will be my Shadowdancer).

And here they all are on the dance floor...

The first Wardancer you actually did the yin-yang symbol. Now that's oldschool Wood Elf stuff right there!

Re: Awakening Of The Woods... an old metal Wood Elf army

Thanks guys - I originally copied the yin-yang from the old Warhammer Quest artwork, then used it across my whole army as a theme (it's also featured on Skarloc's belt buckle).

Turns out it's pretty appropriate with the new rulebook that balances the Wood Elves between High and Dark - lucky guess for me.

Re: Awakening Of The Woods... an old metal Wood Elf army

The Deepwood Scouts are up next (although they may get demoted to Glade Guard, as I'm noticeably short on Core at the moment )

These are the 4th Edition (maybe 5th?) metal Scouts, which were some great miniatures.

I did have the full command group... until the standard bearer ran off to join the Wardancers.

I did have one issue with the model: too many big swords. It made the champion less distinct and made them seem less 'skirmish-y'. So I cut away most of the swords, replacing them with arrows or daggers.

Although this one managed to hang onto his sword ... he must be second-in-command (useful if I need two groups of five, I suppose).

Re: Awakening Of The Woods... an old metal Wood Elf army

And my favourite part of the unit: kneeling archers!

(from the little I know about archery, I'm guessing that isn't the most effective way to shoot a bow, but it does help with the 'forest skirmisher' look.

I guess when you're packing Trueflight Arrows, it doesn't matter how you shoot a bow.

I like that these guys shoot with a flourish.

    And that's the Deepwood Scouts.

Sweet old classic models, and great paint jobs You were right to replace the swords, too many of them and the unit looks a bit goofy.

Re: Awakening Of The Woods... an old metal Wood Elf army

This one is a bit of a proxy/conversion. I'm intending to use him as a Hero on a Great Stag, so you'll have to bear with me.

It started with me picking up odd bits of Tsar Boris Ursus (mostly the bear's body, but no head and no Boris). I used an old metal Minotaur head, cut off the horns and greenstuffed some ears.

As the bear was covered in skulls anyway, I went with the theme and added the back banner of the old metal Queek Headtaker, to give the upper half of the model a bit of height and prominence.

The legs were moulded onto the bear's body, so I had to trim them down (since a sturdy Kislevite is chunkier than a slender Wood Elf) and find a suitable torso. Continuing with the head-collecting theme, I went with this 3rd Edition champion, waving around an axe and severed orc head (which might only be goblin-size, by today's standards).

Clearly this Glade Captain is something of a scalphunter who likes to display his trophies (although the goblin head will impress no-one).

I added a plastic pouch to his belt, just to help bulk out the join between waist and legs, gave him a plastic High Elf spear, and a plastic Wolf Goblin cloak, adding greenstuff where needed.

According to my knowledge of bears (i.e. Wikipedia ) they can run really fast and hit really hard, so I think he makes a decent proxy for a M9 monstrous beats with impact hits.

Also, I'm told that bears use the woods as a lavatory, so it's all very foresty...
