How long does an average 40K game take to play?

The question is the title of this thread.

A 6 turn game, including setup, seems to take me 3 hrs to play. Is this excessively long? (ie, am I partially retarded or temporally challenged? )

Point value of the game being played is also an effect to how long the game lasts, smaller points the quicker. For every 100 points it seems viable to make it 10 minutes. For a 2000 pointgame say it will be 200 minutes if played with out too much socialization. As in not being distracted and moving/firing/dicerolling while talking moving the game along. No big periods of nothing being done otherwise games take longer. Unless you want a very long game is up to you.

    Edit: Big Typo

Well, this afternoon I got to my game store at 12:30 and played 3 games.

2 were 400 point combat patrols, one was a thousand points a side and called in turn 4 - took until around 4:30 with a lot of down time before and between finding opponents.

3 hours for a "real" game isn't bad, especially if you're not going for speed and enjoying the time

I play a lot in the 1500-2000 point range, and it seems to take 2-3 hours.

    Seems to be about average.

Depends what armies are playing. My Necrons vs 1k sons tends to take 1.5 hrs for 2000 pts, because I have all of 7 units of around 8 robots average, and he has 3 units of about 11 dust balls.

A 1000 pt Ork vs Nid swarm would take hours. It all depends on what lists are there and how well you know the game. If you're just starting, it'll probably take twice as long as normal to play a single game.

I've always found that it takes me 45 minutes for every 750pts, including set up. So one and a half hours for an average game (1500pts). Sometimes how many models you have in your army can affect the time you take. I remember some 2000pt battles vs IG with my own Eldar that took an hour a turn, all the way to the end.

I wish i could play a 1500 pt game under 4 hours. But me and my friends like to have fun and enjoy our selves. But if you are concentrated then it shouldnt be too long.

It depends on a lot of things.

    See above.

I've had games across the range identified so far.

I've had 1000 point Mech Eldar vs Mech Tau games last all of an hour, and I finished a 1000 pt Mech Eldar vs footslogging Marines & Grey Knights in a bit under an hour and a half. The same Eldar against all infantry Guard can stretch to two and a half or three hours.

Re: How long does an average 40K game take to play?

The armies on the field plays the biggest part in the total time of a game. My main adversary has a Chaos and Imperial Guard army and I have BT and Nids so a 3000 pointer of Chaos V Bt will take about the same time as 2000 Guard V Nids due to the sheer weight of numbers. Also depends on what turn you open the beer fridge.....

Re: How long does an average 40K game take to play?

To me it seems that it's 1 hour for every thousand points up to 3000k points. After 3000 points its about 2-3 hours per thousand. At 40k points a side a full turn lasts about a night.

Re: How long does an average 40K game take to play?

Also depends on the forces playing. I've been in tourney situations with an armored company that finished under an hour. In contrast i've seen horde games that took an hour to setup, let alone play. I remember one game with a Nid player who took so long to set up and move that we only made two complete turns in a tourney.

But generally you can get four turns in, in 2 hours in a tourney. Figure 2.5 hours for a well moving but friendly game.

Against a player fluent in the rules, 2000pts game run approx 2 hours.

Re: How long does an average 40K game take to play?

I found my tau army slow to play.
-jetpack move also in assault which make 2 moving phase
    -some models have different weapons
-target lock gives different target for the same model or unit
-model count may not go down in a good game so the end of the game is as slow as the beginning
-markerligth ask to think about the order of shooting

I don't consider myself a slow player and normally think fast about what I will do but I finish my game in tournament only if there is escalation or a wipeout of one of the army.

Depending on how much we fool around, usually somewhere between 1,5 and 2,5 hours. It helps if you don't have to look everything up and you know your opponents.

P = Points Factor (per side in thousands)
    M = MEq* Factor per side (MEq* = 1, non-MEq** = 2)

Anything 2,000 below should take around 3-4 hours. I know that I have played a 10,000 point game against a single opponent and it took us the entire day. We did terrain and set up the night before and started in the morning. We took lunch and dinner breaks and man was it just plain fun.
